Gender is the personal traits and social positions that members of a society attach to being female of male. “Are Gendered Toys Bad for Boys and Girls?” is the question asked with in the podcast. So in this essay it will discuss the opinion in the podcast vs. the fact of the sociological perspective in the book.
The podcast talks about how the creation of toys such as lego and according to lego girls like pink and purple, like baking, being a hair stylist, etc. lego gives their opinion as to what a girl and boy play with want to be and will experience. This means that the boy is more of a dominant quality in other words with in the podcast. The book talks about how in other countries girls are more of a dominant quality compared to men. They also say that there is a third gender in other countries so what do the third gender like to play with, and to say what girls and boys like based off of opinion and other things is out of place compared to the

The gender and inequality reflect the cultural patterns of time and place. As said when comparing gender from around the world different societies see and think diferent things when it comes to gender and the role of gender. Gender in the united states compared to arapesh is very different. For example, in the arapesh culture both sexes were considered selfish and aggressive, traits that are defined as masculine. Then, some countries refer to male and female as reverse compared to the united states notion, so no matter what society is thought to be along with the thought of the toys in the podcast gender cannot be defined by sex because of the different meanings and different cultures and societies have different perspectives of what both gender and sex means. The authors use toys as an example for gender specifying children as male or females. They did a study to see what kind of toys that toddlers had at home. They found that girls had more toys for parties, wedding, cooking, and motherhood. And boys had toys that helped them with automotive skills and building skills. They express how parents do this to show children what they want them to do when they get older. Parents buy children toys to set their gender types early so kids know what gender type they have at an early age.
Sociologist Dalton Conley wrote his book, You May Ask Yourself, addressing how “gender is a social construction” that is so normal for society to think how a man or woman should act towards the public. Society often categorizes roles that females and males are suppose to play in, but not only are they categorized they are also being taught what their gender role is suppose to do. The beginning of gender socialization can start with a child who is not born yet by simply having the parents purchase items that are all pink if its expected to be a girl, but if its expected to be a boy then everything they purchase will be blue. Conley states that gender roles are “sets of behavioral norms assumed to accompany ones’ status as male or female” (Conley [2008] 2013:134). So even when a child is growing into their infant years, toys are made specifically for their gender. By examining how social construction places gender in categories it becomes apparent that males and females get differentiated a lot which emphasizes inequality between them.

Despite being one of the most popular, if not most popular, animated movies of all-time, Toy Story offers a limited perspective when it comes to gender because of manhood acts, homosociality, and stereotypes. The manhood acts in the film suppress women at the same time as they support the hegemonic masculinity, which is the masculinity that actively attempts to suppress women and inferior masculinities (Bird pg. 129). When the male characters in the movie do this, it approves of this negative behavior that limits the voice of the female characters. Additionally, the lack of female characters causes the film to portray homosociality, which prevents young girls from seeing a variety of representations of women in the toys. Also, the stereotypes in the movie reduce women to second class citizens. Both male and female stereotypes in the movie support the hegemonic masculinity. Ultimately, the depiction of manhood acts, homosociality, and stereotypes in the film, Toy Story, actively support the hegemonic masculinity at the expense of other gender identities.
Toys play an important role in childhood development as children learn roles and skills from playing. As a result, the toys children are subjected to have an affect on which roles, interests, and skills are learned and practiced. Through Lego’s product Duplo, I will demonstrate the influence particular gendered toys have on children and their performance of traditional gender roles. Gender, which is a learned performance, is something society has been taught from a very early age and toy advertising has played a significant role in reinforcing the performance. One tradition that is reinforced and naturalized by society is the ideology of a male dominated society, representing strong characteristics of heterosexuality and masculinity; also known as hegemonic masculinity. Therefore, using Ideological Criticism, I will analyze how through the branding and design of Lego’s Duplo toys, children have been constructed to do gender differently, ultimately perpetuating and reinforcing hegemonic masculinity.
According to cook and Cusack (2010), Gender stereotypes are concerned with social and cultural construction of man and women, due to their physical, biological, sexual and social functions, structured set of beliefs about the personal attributes of man and women. Childhood is a fundamental and significant period in forming an impression of an individual boy or girl, and man or women finally. Gender is a concept constructed entirely by society. We base gender off of what we perceive and what others perceive of us. Until fairly recently, it has been categorized as one of two things: male or female. When we watched the documentary in class, we saw evidence of society 's socialization of young children. Commercials for Nerf Guns, action figures, and cars and trucks were all depicted with young boys as their users. Never did we see a girl playing with GI Joes or with Hot Wheels, only boys played with those. Meanwhile, dolls, baking sets, and make up kits were only advertised to girls, and no boys were shown playing with Barbies or Bratz. Society begins to shape gender notions from a very early age, where people are shown that they are one or the other, either male or female.
Few toys were aimed equally at both genders. Even board games, while intended for both sexes, usually seemed aimed more towards one gender or another. Gender is a sociological idea, in which it is not based on biology. While there is some biological differences between the sexes, the “meaning” of being male or female is based on social norms. Like race, these “biological” differences provided a system of enabling inequality between the sexes. History offers many examples of the gender norms over time. Despite living in the twentieth century with greater equality, one does not need to go far to see how society and media influence our perception of gender. The generalized perception of male and female are polar opposites. Males are viewed as masculine, strong, authoritative, powerful, and devoid of emotions. It was common for girls and boys toys to play a role as vehicles that are run by adults in accordance to gender stereotyping. In this statement the toys play a role as fuels that run the little vehicles which is built by adults. The number of gender neutral toys that were in the isle were not compatible to the number of girls and boys toys which again proves that gender stereotyping exists. The amount of boys and girls toys that the dominant number matter because it shows that toys are not solely created for entertainment, strategy and spending time, but also spreading the gender stereotyping of the adults. The common themes that the gender stereotyping toys have spread among boys and are obviously different. The boys receive the type of toys that imply themes of aggression, and creativity. There are so many toys that exemplify this fact and three of which are soldiers, which spreads the ideas of war and aggression, and science kits which shows the creativity under instruction. The other type of common themes that are given to girls are dedicated to a few things such as housekeeping Caregiving to babies. In these common themes we see that the most implied things is the difference that makes up the society of the adults which is one reason these themes are shown in toys. Gender socialization often begins early once parents are shown the sex of their child; from then on, baby showers are planned according to gender “appropriate” colors, which are often pink for girls and blue for boys. Even differences in how children are spoke to can be picked up easily in Western cultures. Girls are called pretty and sweet, whereas boys are handsome and strong. Ultimately, the way children learn to identify with their gender culture is in part due to not only family and friends, media, schools, and religion, but also from the toys that may inexplicitly advertise gender expectations. Gender-typed toys may be bought for children as a way for parents to encourage and reinforce gender-appropriate behaviors. However, recent debates have engulfed toy manufacturers and major retailers, which has brought about changes in toy design and marketing in an effort to make reflect more realistic and gender neutral options.

The retail chain Target recognized the influence of the gender bias toys and the impact they have on children and parents and began neutralizing labels within the toy department. Toys should not be gender biased because gender stereotyping has wavered back and forth over the past fifty years. Gender-biased toys can have an impact on a child’s development, and the unnecessary labeling of toys has sparked a cultural shift in society.
