Rudolfo Anaya, author of “Bless Me, Ultima”, uses an analogy of a lake during one of his interviews. He states that the top of the lake is the story and as you go deeper into it, you discover several important symbols and archetypes. The archetypes he uses connects the audience to the “the collective memory” and “connects us to every human being who has ever existed”. Archetypes help authors develop their stories and/or novels with characters that symbolize something meaningful. People often can relate to certain books because of author ’s uses of archetypes. Anaya used one of the main characters Ultima as a very common archetype, the outcast. A handful of authors we have read this year used the archetype of an outcast such as Khaled Hosseini …show more content…

Several of them called her a witch because of the way she healed and they thought that she was associated with the devil. There were very few people in the town that accepted her. Being an outcast, you’re seen as different so people treat you differently. Society sometimes makes you an outcast by who they are. Although we are not a wise old woman who goes to live with a …show more content…

The area she lived in was mainly Hispanics so everyone knows each other and everyone feels like a true community. Although, when she leaves to go to school is when she truly feels out of place. Usually, her mom would pack her traditional Mexican foods for lunch but when she realizes all of the students bring sandwiches to school, she feels like the outcast. In the novel Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, one of the main characters, Ultima is accused many times of being a witch. Ultima is a curandera who uses herbs and medicines to cure people. She goes to live with Antonio Marez, a young boy who lives in the llano with his parents and two sisters due to the fact that she cannot live by herself and had nowhere to stay. Although many people think she is a witch, her use of herbs, medicines, and scapulars show that she is merely just a curandera. With her use of chants and having her spirit in her owl, many are led to believe that she is really a witch.
With every corner we turn in today’s culture, we become more and more aware of the archetypes that surround us. Archetypes are the works of a typical character, situation, setting, or symbol that can be found in fantasy and reality. An example would be the renowned medieval story Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Pearl Poet. The author permeates the story with situational, symbolic, and character archetypes that illustrate the profound life of Sir Gawain. Sir Gawain was apprehensive of his journey at first, but as time passes, he began to make choices that unveils to the audience the true flawed knight that he was.
The novel shows equality and gives the reader information on hardships experienced by Latinos without a show of feelings or complaint. When reading the novel, I found it interesting to read that Puerto Ricans are exiled and I found it

Carl Jung, the very first pioneer who discovered human collective unconsciousness, including archetypes, once said, “An archetype is something like an old watercourse along which the water of life flowed for a time, digging a deep channel for itself. The longer it flowed the deeper the channel, and the more likely it is that sooner or later the water will return.” An archetype is the universal patterns and behaviors that represent a typical human experience that is passed down from generations to generations, creating its originality. In “A Separate Peace”, John Knowles uses many archetypes to enrich the personality of his characters, especially Gene and Finny based on common human experiences. By embodying the archetypes of the Fall from Innocence, the Unhealable, and the Crossroads in “A Separate Peace,” John Knowles was successful in establishing the theme for the novel which implies that the guilt which is begotten from one’s deceitful actions would remain as an irrecoverable wound overtime.
Carl Jung applied the term “archetype” to literature because he realized that all people share similar experiences in their respective cultures. Authors use archetypes so readers can relate to the characters in their stories; such is the case with the characters in Little
Having knowledge and wisdom comes with a price and is not easy to handle when everyone is afraid of you for having so much knowledge. In the book, Bless Me Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya, Ultima, a curandera, is seen as an evil, old witch who uses her magic against others. In actuality, she heals Lucas even when she is accused, got rid of the 3 Indian ghosts harassing a family, and tells Antonio she accepts her death because she accepted to dedicate her life in the service of others when her owl died. While some may say Ultima is just a “bruja” and a mad witch who uses black magic, I believe she is actually a wise and kind character and knows many things that others do not. She is ready to help anyone even though she is accused.
In Homers epic poem “The Odyssey” there are many archetypes, many of which were the origin of the archetype. An archetype is a character type, place, or symbol, every culture shares. In “The Odyssey” Homer uses archetypes to evoke meaning to the story. Some examples of archetypes in “The Odyssey” are the temptress, and the father-son conflict.
Archetype refers to a generic version of a personality. Archetypes are continually present in folklore and literature for thousands of years, including prehistoric artwork. The identification of archetypes in literature is to primarily find the behaviors and characteristics of the main protagonist, it is important to discover the ambiguity of how the traits change and develop throughout the rising
The whole movie deals with emotions and how they grow up in that environment and that reflects in next generation’s life. Their perceptions are a lot different from my culture. One thing that I felt from this movie is whatever you see from parents or elder siblings, most of the time you will follow that way and it’s also happen in my culture also. Twenty years ago at about the same time that "Cisco" and "Stingray" Santiago became leaders of the notorious Assassination gang and Luis also became a gang leader. That movie is also a great example of emotional intelligence. This movie is kind of empathetic.
2. An example of an archetype in Bless Me Ultima would be Ultima as mentor to Antonio . Ultima mentorship realtes to the book main theme to try to encourage the people to do the right thing.

Archetypes allow us to build strong appealing and memorable stories.
Archetypes are a useful foundation that authors can use as a reference in order to help with their character development. But when crafting characters, many authors apply the archetypes to them without making any changes that make those characters their own. According to Bransford (2010), Archetypes become unique when the author adds their own twists to the story (para 10). An archetype an be copied into characters, but the story is another factor that allows characters and stories to blossom into something
In today’s society, my generation is fascinated with the newest trends, and whoever does not conform to those trends is deemed an outcast. Due to the impact of this quote on my life, I proudly claim to be an outcast. This quote allows me to understand that whoever I might be, I should always remain true to myself and not let other’s opinions sway who I am.
