Archetypes In Bless Me Ultima

Rudolfo Anaya, author of “Bless Me, Ultima”, uses an analogy of a lake during one of his interviews. He states that the top of the lake is the story and as you go deeper into it, you discover several important symbols and archetypes. The archetypes he uses connects the audience to the “the collective memory” and “connects us to every human being who has ever existed”. Archetypes help authors develop their stories and/or novels with characters that symbolize something meaningful. People often can relate to certain books because of author ’s uses of archetypes. Ultima or La Grande, the wise woman who was also considered the old healer, came to live with the Márez family. Plenty of the people in the neighborhood saw Ultima as an outsider. Several of them called her a witch because of the way she healed and they thought that she was associated with the devil. There were very few people in the town that accepted her. It’s about a Chicana, a young Mexican-American girl, named Esperanza and her experiences in her neighborhood. The area she lived in was mainly Hispanics so everyone knows each other and everyone feels like a true community. Although, when she leaves to go to school is when she truly feels out of place. Usually, her mom would pack her traditional Mexican foods for lunch but when she realizes all of the students bring sandwiches to school, she feels like the outcast.
