Aquarius has been in orbit since 2011, and gathered the data for this image in August 2013.
Australia's interior desert is also clearly visible, with the continent's moisture concentrated along the coasts.
Aquarius gathers data on soil moisture by detecting microwaves given off by the top 2 inches of soil.
Changes in the microwave signal indicate different levels of moisture.
Though not shown in this image, Aquarius also collects data on the concentration of salt at the ocean's surface.
Soil moisture measurements can help predict droughts and floods, and provide crucial information for agriculture.
NASA plans to launch a new satellite, the Soil Moisture Active Passive satellite, this year to gather more data on soil moisture, including
The land is uplifted crust blocks that form parallel ranges but surface water doesn’t run to the ocean. Instead, it evaporates over time leaving a salt flat.
addition of a few liters of water can be accurately observed and quantified. Additionally, the
Severe water scarcity could be imminent in the not so distant future. Flooding crop furrows has been an inexpensive irrigation method for over six thousand years. Though traditional, it is very wasteful. An excessive amount of the water evaporates into he air, or soaks into the ground while the plants receive very little. The excess water drains into rivers and underground aquifers. The water running from the furrows is polluted with fertilizers. The constant use of flooding creates erosion, waterlogging and salinization of the soil. 40 percent of the world’s food grows on irrigated soil.
Emily Croft, a Norwayne High School Freshman, wants to pursue a career in agriculture, specifical animal science. Because ag is part of what she wants to do, she enjoyed participating in the soil judging
Depletion of ground water may lead to land compaction that in turn decreases its ability to store water.
Despite the grueling work of the police, all the potential suspects have been unsuccessfully convicted. Around 20 letters and cards sent by the Zodiac are the only real trace the Zodiac left of himself. There is no physical evidence that was found at the scene of the crimes,“At least eight descriptions of the Zodiac are out there but those most common were that of a caucasian male, around thirty years old, stocky build, and short reddish brown hair, Zodiac was typically described in dark clothes, military style boots, and glasses. There are composites of the Zodiac but no prime suspects were identified based on the physical description of the killer” (Kelleher,
California is the leading state in agricultural production; however, the state has taken a blow from this four-year drought. Farmers have been forced to re-evaluate their irrigation systems and make necessary changes to conserve water. In order to judge the agricultural water use efficiency, scientists are using a ratio of evapotranspiration of the crop grown to the water applied to the crop. Evapotranspiration is the total evaporation and plant transpiration from land surface to the atmosphere (Marin et al. 2015). Through various
My favourite constallation is the capricornus. It actually is my zodiac sign. Little magical glowing in the dark stars are fixed to my ceiling, representing the capricornus. It is up there since a few years now. Even when I moved out for three years, it was not removed from the ceiling.
My favorite constellation is Capricornus, because in Latin it means "The Goat". I chose this constellation because goats are my favorite animals and I even own a goat at my muggle house. Capricornus is one of twelve constellations in the zodiac family, and is the 40th largest constellation in the sky. Capricornus's brightest star is Deneb Algedi, Delta Capricorni. This constellation is found in the southern sky.
Australia is both the smallest and oldest continent in the world, and it is the only country that is also a continent. [1] It is an island located between the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific, just south of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. At 2,941,299 square miles, Australia is the sixth-largest country in the world and only about 150,000 square miles (about the size of Montana) smaller than the continental United States. Its interior land is a flat and sparsely populated desert, but as you move outward the climate changes to grassland, subtropical, tropical, and even temperate in the southeastern region. [1] While more than 70% of Australia is arid, the rest includes a variety of rich environments including flood plains,
I am firm believer of CONFIRMATION BIAS. I would read my zodiac sign just for fun, which I happen to be a Leo. Friday morning before school started I read my horoscope for the day and I saw that my zodiac sign said I was going to be moody. By the time I went to school I was already mad because I arrived at class twenty minutes late. After six horrible hours at school I went home all hot headed because I had a lot of homework to do and not enough time to do it. I had to babysit my nephews for the whole night and I was impatient with for the most stupidness things. As you can see because I read on my horoscope that I was going to be moody, my mood throughout the day was temperamental.
When I was little, I really didn’t know what astrology was or what your zodiac sign was. When I was growing up, I finally figured out what it all meant and how it worked. From that point on I was instantly clicked. I loved reading my horoscope and when ever I did read it, nine out of ten times it would be right, and that’s why I loved reading my horoscope. It was just something I did every morning, and then I would go throughout my day. Then at night when I would be back on the computer, i would reread them, and realize that most of the time those things did happen, or I did feel that type of emotion.
A DGPS-based, hydraulically operated penetrometer system mounted on a JD Gator will be used to quantify geo-referenced soil penetration resistance during the growing season. Soil compaction values will be calculated from the measured force required to push a
For June 2011, the maximum soil moisture value was 0.2857 m3/m3, the minimum value was 0.0548 m3/m3, and the average soil moisture value was 0.138763 m3/m3. As for December 2011, the maximum soil moisture value was 0.2894 m3/m3, the minimum value was 0.2284 m3/m3, and the average value was 0.240601 m3/m3. One potential explanation for the differences in the average values for the two months is the amount of precipitation for those months. By analyzing Figure 1 and Figure 3, it is clear that the month of December 2011 had received more precipitation and a more even distribution of it than the month of June 2011. Due to the higher precipitation, the average soil moisture content for the month of December would be higher as well. A second potential explanation would be the higher plant productivity rate during summer. As plants use moisture in the soil as a source of water and then lose large quantities of it through transpiration, the
Plant water stress is a major factor affecting crop yield. With the ever-increasing human population, there is a constant stress exerted on water resources (McGwire et al., 2000). So irrigation to avoid or relieve this stress must be done judiciously, not only to avoid environmental problems such as groundwater pollution and runoff, but also to keep the cost down on a limited and expensive resource. Soil moisture sensors are often used for precision irrigation control purposes. However, soil moisture sensors can only assess the degree of water deficit stress that is imposed to the plants, but not necessarily the level of water deficit stress that is actually experienced by the plants (Sinclair and Ludlow, 1985). An assessment of leaf water content, on the other hand, may yield more detailed insight into the plant’s actual physiological response to a certain degree of low soil moisture content, and how water deficit stress is in fact experienced by the plant. Leaf water content is a key indicator of plant health, vigor and photosynthetic efficiency (Harry, 2006). Accurate retrieval of plant water content plays a crucial role in assessing drought risk (Bauer et al., 1986), select genotypes in breeding for water stress (Munjal and Dhanda, 2005), predicting wildfire and monitoring the physiological condition of vegetation (Peñuelas and Filella, 1998) and biomass (Cho et al., 2007; Mutanga et al., 2005; Ullah et al., 2012c), while in the agriculture domain it helps in scheduling
