However, there is still the matter of Adam going to fight again and when Ruth asks Adam if he will sign the muster book he is torn between staying with his family and Ruth or going to war and fighting. As I read “April Morning” I found it very hard to stop reading. It is a fast moving book that goes through, in detail, each battle that Adam had to face in just 24 hours. I loved Adams character mostly because of his sarcasm in the beginning of the novel. I liked the fact that he did not really want to shoot and kill the Redcoats he just wanted them to leave. The book was cleverly written, and I admired Howard Fast for being able to write a book just about one day and still keeps it interesting the whole way through. I never found myself getting bored or tiered of reading it. I think it gives a great perspective on what the Battle of Lexington was like. It had everything a book, in my opinion, should have: love, hate, sorrow, terror, adventure, and action. A great read for anyone interested in learning more about our American history and how the American Revolution
This book is about an 18 year old boy named Henry Fleming. He decides that he wants to enlist into the Union Army, in hopes of finding glory and fame in doing so. The army turned out to be pretty boring because all he and the rest of his troops are doing is sitting there, waiting for an enemy to approach them. When he engages in his first battle against the confederate soldiers he is overwhelmed with fear, due to the fact that it’s the first time he has had to fight. In the midst of the battle he tries to run away from the scene, eventually he runs right into the generals. The generals are at the back of the line giving orders to the troops. The troops stand their ground and outlast the confederate soldiers, winning the battle.
Joseph Simmons A monster of a man with a heart of gold. This is how I picture Joseph Simmons from April Morning by Howard Fast. This book is about the first battles of the Revolutionary War. It is seen through the eyes 15-year old Adam Cooper.
“If the Reverend hadn’t take the situation in hand and preached one of the hottest sermons in hand and preached one of the hottest sermons on the relationship of the fruits of the Earth to plain, downright human foolishness, I don’t know where it would have all ended” (Fast 68). The novel April Morning is a book of historical fiction written by Howard Fast. The book depicts the historic battle of Lexington in the Revolutionary War. The theme of April’s Morning is about a fifteen-year-old boy named Adam Cooper who is trying to prove to his father that he is a man. As the small village of Lexington prepares to battle the British Red Coats, the village relies heavily on the Reverend. The Reverend is a flat character because his stance as a leader does not change. He is also a static character because he does not change in character no matter what happens. Although throughout the book the Reverend’s true name is never revealed, he has many other character traits are shown in

Activism, culture and value have always had a tremendous influence in society. When it comes to the Appalachian region of the United States, people tend to see our culture and values differently. The individuals of the Appalachian region have been stereotyped for far too long, people forget that West Virginia has played a huge role in building this country. Our coal miners have put their lives in danger time and time again, some losing them, for worker’s rights. The Battle of Blair Mountain was the largest labor rebellion in the history of the United States. This was the foundation of the movement for eight hour work days and minimum wages. The novel Storming Heaven by Denise Giardina is a fictionalized tale of the conflict that took place in these coal fields of West Virginia. The novel brings to light the stereotypes, race and religion of the Appalachian people.
Adam has no desire at all to go and feels that it should be Charles as he is the strongest and more aggressive of the two brothers. Meanwhile, having no choice, once he heals from the beating he accepts his lot and goes off to war. When Adam finally gets out, he does not wish to return home and signs up for re-enlistment, returning to his old regiment for another five years. Once his second term is complete, he still has the struggle within himself about returning to the ranch. Consequently, he becomes a wanderer joining up with a band of hobos.
Through and repetition, Robert Hayden successfully conveys a remorseful tone in his poem “Those Winter Sundays”. Alliterations illustrate the intensity of the speaker’s father’s laborious responsibilities. The father puts his clothes on “in the blueblack cold”, implicitly depicting the “blackblue” bruises covering his skin, as the color describes, or the bleak, frigid conditions he has to work under. This shows the strenuous effort the father exerted to support his family, even in unfavorable “weekday weather”, exhibiting the speaker’s present appreciation.
The poem, "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden, in five sentences, describes the relationship between a father and a son. There is no rhythm and only fifteen lines to build the reader towards the essence of the poem. The main idea is built up over a period of time, while the son tries to understand his father's actions. Even though the theme is one of responsibility and parental sacrifice, it also emphasizes bringing back memories. Symbols in the poem help give details and improve the reading of the poem.
During the early 1900s till now, women have been discriminated against and have been battling for equal rights in the United States. In 1960s America, the feminist movement was growing rapidly, bringing out influential women and protesters who were starting to get noticed by the majority of the population. One of those influential women, author Adrienne Rich, published an essay that talks about how women are treated differently. In the essay, “When We Dead Awaken: Writing as a Re-vision”, Rich argues that a stereotypical and prejudiced male society represses women. She demonstrates these views through the use of literary history, her personal experience towards women’s discrimination, and the potential women have to
In his memoir Tuesdays with Morrie, Mitch Albom is portrayed as a mediocre American man who has acquired many accomplishments as a journalist yet finds himself simply existing instead of living his life to the fullest. With the help of his old, dying sociology professor Morrie Schwartz, Mitch sets out to discover the truth about various aspects of life. However, none of this would be possible without his wife, Janine, who just so happens to be the opposite of him.
In this movie we see great contradictions and conflictions that The British Empire and early american colonies faced. How does society believe that it’s allowed or it’s okay to own another human being? How does a rooted Christian society see only pros of slaves and no cons? Amazing Grace is a gorgeous movie about a very Christian person. It has deep, soul-stirring Christian references to the sinfulness of people, the salvation of Jesus Christ, and the divinity of Jesus Christ, with frequent renditions of the great hymn “Amazing Grace.” This is the story of William Wilberforce, who led the fight to stop slavery in 18th Century England. After a young life of debauchery, William came to Christ at the age of 25. He believed he was called by God
In '' My left foot ,'' The author was fighting to overcome a inability whereas

A Steady Rain, written by Keith Huff, was one of the best things I have enjoyed. It was so simple yet so detailed at the same time. I have never attended a staged reading before. When I walked in I was expecting a big stage with many details that show where the act takes place, but it was not anything like that. When I saw there was a small table with two chairs in a small room with some plastic chairs, I was really surprised. I still could not believe because I saw some curtains behind the table, and I thought maybe the stage would be behind that curtain yet it was not. At the beginning, I thought this was going to be boring, and it will make me sleep but it did not.
Generally speaking, through the violence of war, many would agree that being able to keep your values would be a feat in itself. April Morning by Howard Fast explores the journey of a young boy named Adam whom is forced to grow up quickly after the shot heard around the world in Lexington, Massachusetts on April 19, 1775. A young boy’s father dies, and one non-violent leader of the community helps, along with many others, to show a boy the path of a man. “The Reverend… argues against killing and war… and quotes the Bible to justify the rebel cause” (Novelguide Editors). Historically known as Jonas Clarke (Novelguide Editors), the Reverend, an advocate of the community, is argumentative, accepting, and kind throughout the fighting.
