Apple originated from Central Asia and reached Europe via the Silk Road thousands of years ago. Although it is now cultivated worldwide as a kind of common fruit, the term ‘apple’ itself is relatively special in some cultures due to its religious and mythological meanings. This essay will briefly talk about the role of apple in some cultures from language aspects.
Before mentioning anything specific, the words for apple in different languages are interesting to introduce. For instance, apple is called ‘apfel’ in German, ‘pomme’ in French and ‘mela’ in Italian. These words, which differ from each other, actually have varied Proto-Indo-European roots. Both the German and English come from

It first appeared as a wedding present from Gaia, the Greek mother goddess, to Hera, Queen of the Gods. It was later grown in the Garden of the Hesperides, tended by the Daughters of Evening and guarded by a hundred-headed dragon. In the Judgement of Paris, Eris, Goddess of Strife, stole the Golden Apple of Discord, which led to the Trojan War.
However, it is still a big controversy whether the ‘golden apple’ really refers to the apple or other fruit, such as the orange, since the term ‘pomum’ has a wide meaning. Also, many languages used to describe the orange with the idea of ‘golden apple’, although the slang ‘apples and oranges’ means totally different things nowadays.
One more story worth thinking about is search for the Golden Fleece by the hero Jason and the Argonauts. The word for a sheep or goat in the Greek is ‘melon’, which can also mean ‘apple’. Therefore, ‘the Golden Fleece’ can also be understood as ‘the Golden Apple’, and this adventure becomes another pursuance of the golden apple. Moreover, Heracles, the son of Zeus and Alcmene, who managed to fetch the golden apples of the Hesperides in the myth Twelve Labours of Heracles, also accompanied Jason in this

It discusses the original uses for the apple and how it came to be the sweet fruit that we enjoy today. It explains how Johnny Appleseed really existed, and was named John Chapman. •The apple as we see it today was not always like it is now, it used to be different than every other apple. In other words, if you planted a seed from an apple that you like, the apple that will grow on the new tree will not resemble the old apple at all.
The rise of food production in the Fertile Crescent was made possible by the Mediterranean climate. In contrast, Mesoamerica, New Guinea, and the Eastern US were limited in the available large seed grasses, domestic able animals, edible pulses, and high protein domestic plants. Arrival of appropriate founder sort speed up the food production where suitable plants were previously lacking. Local inhabitants routinely master their local ethno biology (thus few domestications have occurred in modern times). However, there can be reactionary populations resisting change. Of 200,000 wild plants, only about 200 have been domesticated for consumption, and 12 species account for 80% of world food tonnage.
The Trojans and Greeks fought a frivolous war that began with a golden apple and a trio of precarious goddesses. It initiated when Prince Paris was given an apple from the “evil goddess of Discord, Eris,” and told him to choose the fairest goddess between three. Paris ludicrously chose the goddess who offered him the most beautiful woman. This woman was Helen, queen of Sparta. But Paris stole her from her husband and refused to give her back to Menelaus.
apples and some of which were shaped like eggs, some were small and others were large."
Not only does Pollan travel to the places where John Chapman lived back in the 19th century, but also does a great deal of research on the apple in order to have a more educated conclusion on the “environmentalist’s” persona. Pollan discusses that the apple is originally from the mountains of Kazakhstan, made its way to Europe through the silk trade route, and eventually to the United States with the arrival of Columbus and the rest of the Europeans. He also points out that the apples that we eat are strictly from grafted trees, therefore the seeds that Chapman was planting would produce apples so bitter and sour that they would only be edible in the form of hard apple cider. Furthermore, if much of Chapman’s business was focused around the production of trees to make cider then the essence of his story is completely altered. He is no longer a Christian saint who has devoted himself to preserving nature by planting trees; he is, as stated by Michael Pollan, an American Dionysus - Greek god of wine and
One of the risks Tom Sawyer takes is when he lets Ben and his other friends whitewash the fence. He takes this risk because Ben offers to do so, with an apple being one of the

There are many events in the myth, The Golden Apple of Discord. One is when Paris gave Ares the crown for winning a bull fight proving he was true to his word. The second event was when Eris threw the apple of discord among the Olympians and see who was the fairest of them all. The third important event was when Paris gave the apple to Aphrodite thinking her bribe was the best out of Athena’s, and Hera’s. The last important event is when Paris received Aphrodite's gift of Helen loving Paris. To achieve this Paris stole Helen from the king of Menelaus.

‘You have plucked fruit in the garden yonder. You have it in your pocket now. And you are going to carry it back, untasted, to the Lion; for him to eat, for him to use. You simpleton! Do you know what that fruit is? I will tell you. It is the apple of youth, the apple of life. I know, for I have tasted it; and I feel already such changes in myself that I know I shall never grow old or die. Eat it, Boy, eat it; and you and I will both live forever and be king and queen of this whole world - or of your

In the poem “After Apple-Picking”, Robert Frost has cleverly disguised many symbols and allusions to enhance the meaning of the poem. One must understand the parallel to understand the central theme of the poem. The apple mentioned in the poem could be connected to the forbidden fruit from the Garden of Eden. To understand the complete meaning of Frost’s poem one needs to be aware that for something to be dead, it must have once had life. Life and death are common themes in poetry, but this poem focuses on what is in between, life’s missed experiences and the regret that the speaker is left with.
