People are sometimes not who they claim to be. We can express our feelings through actions and words but we can fake it in order to hide the real truth. The play, The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare presents multiple motifs of appearance vs reality. The characters aren’t who they appear to be. These motifs allow the readers to sustain a better comprehending of the true identity of the characters. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are the victims of appearance vs reality. They hide their emotions by faking an expression. Although the characters seem morally disciplined they hide their truest and darkest feelings, causing them to hurt the people around them. She will do anything at her will to be evil. Lady Macbeth is the spouse of Macbeth. Macbeth, the honest, brave soldier is influenced by Lady Macbeth’s wicked personality. Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to, “Look like the time. Bear welcome in your eye, Your hand, your tongue. Look like th' innocent flower, But be the serpent under ’t.” (1.5.58). Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to greet the king with a friendly expression in his eyes, hands, and words. She wants Macbeth to play innocent but be the serpent underneath it. The serpent is a connotation of sneaky and evil. She wants Macbeth to be kind to the king than kill him out of surprise. The characters in the play wouldn’t view Lady Macbeth as a wicked lady because from appearance she is a sweet lady who is a proud of Macbeth. The reader is aware of this because the characters around Lady Macbeth are not afraid of her. In reality, Lady Macbeth is no where close to being a sweet and proud lady. The readers have gotten a sense of Lady Macbeth’s personality, evil and selfish. But after the influence she had on Macbeth, someone has been following the same foot steps as Lady Macbeth. Unfortunately, Macbeth did murder King Duncan. He is under the influence of Lady Macbeth and he has been through a lot, slowly evolving into the mind of Lady Macbeth. For example, Macbeth replies to Lady Macbeth, “.. - Let your remembrance Apply to Banquo; present him eminence, Both with eye and tongue: unsafe the while that we Must leave our honors in these flattering streams, And make our faces vizards to our hearts, Disguising what they are.”(3.2.37). Macbeth is telling Lady Macbeth the same thing she told him in act one scene five. Macbeth hopes for Lady Macbeth to flatter and make Banquo feel important. In this scene, Macbeth is still not king but Banquo is. Macbeth is in a risky situation to be king and he will do anything to be it. He will hide his true emotions and even lie to his partner. This line allows the reader to realize that anyone can be someone they aren’t. At the start, Macbeth was not a liar. He was the honest soldier.
