‘‘Imoinda is as irrecoverably lost to me as if she were snatched by the cold arm of death. Oh! She is never to be retrieved unless I would either ignobly set an ill precedent to my successors, or abandon my country and fly with her to some unknown world who never heard our story” (Aphra Behn, Oroonoko. In: Philip Henderson (ed.), this quote shows the relationship between love and obedience. Oroonoko learned a different kind of obedience through his love for Imoinda which teaches him to obey his heart, not only did he learn how to express his passion but by continuing to love Imoinda, even after the king has taken her as his own Oroonoko disobeyed his grandfather and his society’s tradition. He then learns how to protect his
I think Ishmael refused the "jug of water" from Gasemu because he was angry that he couldn't go see his family right now and that they had to wait to rest. On page 93 Ishmael says, “I became angry that we had to rest, and I sat on a big rock away from the group”. He also said, “Part of me was on the way to the village, the other impatiently waited on the hill”. He was anxious to see them because it had been a long time since he last saw them and has been thinking about them everyday. These two quotes showed how he was angry and anxious about finding out that his family was still alive, but couldn’t see them right away. Ishmael started his journey with Junior, Mohamed, Talloi, Gibrilla, Kaloko, and Khalilou. Ishmael got split from them whenever
An Tinh remembers who she really is based off the orphan she met many years later. An Tinh was working as an interpreter for the New York police when she stumbled into the orphan she saw many years ago. Firstly, the orphan was begging the police officer to let her return to her jungle. An Tinh knew the pain and hardship she was going through and empathized for her as she was blindly traveling on busses to get home. “Had I been able to, I’d have erased every trace of dirty hands from her body” (Page 82).
Parvana is a novel written by Deborah Ellis that was published in 2002. Throughout the detailed book, Parvana and her companions encounter certain responsibilities which relate to the quote; ‘Some responsibilities are taken by choice, others are forced upon us.’ This especially relates to a certain character in the book, Mrs Weera who is one of Parvana’s old school teachers. Throughout the book, she has to make many decisions on whether she will stand up and take responsibility. This includes taking control of Parvana’s household, taking care of the children and caring for Homa.
I believe the connection Utanapishtim is making between the sleeper and the dead being alike is because often when people die, it’s referred to as being in a permanent sleep. The only difference between the two is, when you’re asleep you wake up and when you’re dead you stay asleep. After that quote it gets confusing, because Untanapishtim goes on to say, “They limn not death’s image, No one dead has ever greeted a human in this world.” (80). I had to look up what the word “limn” meant and found out that it means to depict or describe. Therefore, I took that sentence to mean, sleep and death does not describe death’s image. I’m not really sure what Utanapishtim was trying to say as I read further past the quote of the sleeper and the dead being alike, but in today’s time I would take that simile as being compared to when people say, “When you die, you’re just sleeping.”
Oroonoko is able to sustain his code of virtue and fidelity by showing an act of true loyalty that proves his devotion and love to his lover and wife, Imoinda. After the King, Oroonoko’s grandfather, vigorously takes Imoinda for himself, Oroonoko
The quote I choose showed examples of how Dumas was an a child and how her family interacts with the community. Also the story taught people what it feels like to be from a different country and how your treated. Over all The quote shows many examples of how Dumas was as a
In the story “A long way Gone by Ishmael Beah” Ishmael first character is innocent and childlike in the beginning of the novel. His innocence and childlike character is a significant role of characterization. Ishmael’s symbol of innocence is the moon, which is constantly being brought you into the story. “Some nights I saw the head of a man in the room...it pleases me to know that part of my childhood is still embedded with me.” It made him happy that he knew he still had his innocence and childlike manner for picturing a man as the moon. In the beginning of the novel he also is a child who has a childlike manner.“We sat together on the stoop and briefly talked about our childhood pranks...we had dancing at talent shows, practicing new dances, playing soccer until we couldn't see the ball.” The quote shows that he was a young boy who liked playing with friends and having fun. In the beginning of the novel Ishmael is innocent but once war comes around him, he changes.
Quote 1: “My childhood had gone by without me knowing, and it seemed as if my heart had frozen.”
A4. There are a few characteristics that Antonia exhibits that lead to Cather's admiration of her. One of them is Antonia's ability to be a hard worker. For example, after Antonia's father died, she helped her mother and brother work in the fields. One quote that proves this is "If I rode over to see her where she was ploughing, she stopped at the end of the row to chat for a moment, then gripped her plough handles, clicked to her team, and waded on down the furrow, making me feel like she was now grown up and had no time for me". This quote shows that Antonia was growing up and becoming a hard worker in the aftermath of her father's death because she only talked to Jim for a moment before going back to work. Another characteristic that Antonia exhibits that led to Cather's admiration of her is her
Ishmael Leseur is the main character in “Don’t Call Me Ishmael” a book by Michael Gerard Bauer. As a young boy, he courageously stepped up to year nine only to be bullied for his name, embarrassed in front of his first love and to become a social outcast. This leads to him naming year nine the toughest, the weirdest, the most embarrassingly awful and best year of his life.
Furthermore, another character that proves that Victor Hugo is trying to say that human nature is basically good is Javert. On page 336 it states, “Javert felt that something horrible was penetrating his soul, admiration for a convict. Repose first for a galley slave can that be possible? He shuddered at it yet could not shake it off… Javert bent his head and looked. All was black. He could distinguish nothing. He heard a frothing sound; but he did not see the river…”. This quote by Victor Hugo emphasizes on this unusual emotion of goodness arousing within Javert. It’s revealing a transformation of Javert’s character from a hardened law worshipper directly to someone feeling for a convict. Javert is seen gaining his conscious and eventually

Imoinda was viewed as a property, yet she gained much respect from the slaves and they viewed her as a leader. She seemed to have overcome the stereotype of being a property, yet she still allowed Oroonoko to take her and her child’s life. She “accepted her death and smiled with joy” as it was occurring (224). The murder that Oroonoko decided to act upon can be viewed as a heroic move, but also
In the book, I Am Malala written by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb, there are several pivotal quotes that help one understand the struggles Malala faced during her lifetime. The struggles Malala faced were to go against the Taliban and fight for the education of all people. A first claim shows how Malala felt about education. “Is education not the right of these children?” (Yousafzai and Lamb 84). At this time, the Taliban felt that girls should not attend school and that they should not receive an education. As a way to retaliate, Malala and her father printed that quote onto thousands of leaflets to be distributed to the people of Swat. Malala and her father wanted the people to stop and think about how everyone deserves the right to
