Throughout the novel, the readers have the ability to follow along Jeanette’s life story. She deals with her distracted yet present parents. They remind her of the important lessons in life. One of the most important lessons that Jeannette learns is that life will eventually work in the end and if it still isn't working that just means it is not the end
Likewise, Jeanette uses personification throughout the book when she claims, "Then the flames leaped up, reaching my face," (Walls 9). When Walls personifies the fire as leaping up and reaching her face describes how the fire had burnt her face and quickly became out of control causing her physical harm. But the reader can also sense imagery where she writes, "I felt a blaze of heat on my right side," (Walls 9). The visual imagery of when Jeanette sets herself on fire may also give the reader thoughts of why a three-year-old is cooking hot dogs for herself on a stove. This also shows that maybe the purpose was to show that Jeanette's parents were not caring enough and brings out the unhealthy living situations she was living in which continues on when living in Welch. Jeanette, growing up in these
From enthusiastic and on board with the life she lives, to not enjoying it and wanting to stop, Jeanette Walls life changes over the time of the book. Jeanette grew up with siblings, Brian, Lori and Maureen. She had a hard childhood constantly moving and not being able to make friends and did not have a lot of food. Her father was an alcoholic and could not hold a job, and her mother was a teacher who wanted to be an artist. She always dreamt big and had a lot of hope for the future but that changes in the book.

At the early age of 3, she began forgiving her mother for the way she treated her, always neglecting her children. Her mother refers to a saddle as an analogy saying that if falling off the horse, it shouldn’t stop a person from riding horses. Similarly, even if she burned herself from cooking, she shouldn’t stop doing that. As faulty as her mother was, Jeanette's extremely strong mind made her braver and more courageous through the tragedies. Despite the hardships, she walked through life optimistically no matter the circumstance. She forced herself to have complete faith in her parents. When Jeanette’s dad threw her into a pool to teach her to swim, she thought to herself, “I figured he must be right, there was no other way to explain it” (66). Rex put his daughter in a life or death situation. Although she was extremely nervous, her attitude towards the end was incredibly optimistic, forcing herself to believe that her dad was right without doubt. She doesn’t let herself experience pity and depression for being born into a unfortunate family, she hopefully searched for the sliver of light at the end of the dark tunnel. Although Jeanette went through a lot growing up, in the end when her dad is sick and in
She opens the door to her childhood, beginning with when she was 3 years old and boiling her own hot dog by standing on top of the chair to reach the stovetop. While doing that, her pink dress catches on the fire because of which gets her horribly burned. She spends a few days in the hospitals and enjoys it too, because she is getting food on time and is not left starving. One day her dad shows up and they run off out of the hospital without paying the bills of her treatment. That night her family leaves the town and move to another place, taking as much stuff as possible with them. Most of her childhood memories involve her whole family- mom, dad, Jeanette, Lori, Brian, and later on Maureen -moving from one desert towns to another, settling in as long as her dad can hold the job. This happened more frequently due to the dad’s alcoholism coupled with his paranoia about the organized society and the state. One of the towns they stayed in was Battle Mountain, Nevada, where they spend a few months. Jeanette and her brother Brian spent many hours exploring the desert and collecting rocks. Even their mother got a job as a teacher and
As she grows up she starts to understand more of what is going on around her. towards the beginning of the story whenever her parents got into fights she would know the outcome of the fight and not be worried. after a while though with more and more fights happening she would begin to talk to her sister and her brother about how bad it all was. Jeanette even tried to convince her mother to leave her father “ Mom never told Dad that I'd urged her to leave him”(189 walls) This shows how negative she thought her life has gotten. Just by the way she talks to her family members shows the negative tone towards the end of the book.
Through many trials in Jeanette’s life, she remained resilient. "You've got to get right back in the saddle. You can't live in fear of something as basic as fire. ” (Walls 2.2.2). At three years old, Jeannette was cooking food for her family. In this scene, she cooks hot dogs and ends up setting fire to her hair. Metaphorically, although her hair was on fire, that was a minor detail of the many trials she has gone through, if she weren't resilient, she would not have the strength to endure the pain and difficulties her home-life has given to her. “I crawled along the railroad embankment to the road and sat down to wait for Mom and Dad to come back.” (2.6.15). Jeanette at four years old, crawls onto the side of the road after an explosion occurs, wait for

Rex wins that money gambling and she uses it to pay for her college. Then her parents find a home for free and they invite Jean to see it, for she feels that they are in the right place with the right people. Jean moves in with her boyfriend, Eric, and then after four years they get married. Jean then finds out that her mother’s brother died and that his land is worth one million dollars. Jean wonders why her mother doesn’t sell it so that she wouldn’t be poor any more, but she says its because its family land and they need to keep it that way. Brian becomes a police officer, Lori becomes an illustrator, and Maureen does drugs. Maureen moves in with her parents and when her mom tells her to move out, she stabs her and gets arrested. After the arrest the whole family splits. Rex gets sick and dies from a heart attack. Jean got divorced and remarried John and at the end of the book
