Marine’s are in a disciplined society which only military values are allowed. I am in a modern society which allows me to have my own values. Both Marine and I reside in a manipulative society. Society as a whole could learn from using trust. Without trust the Marine Corps. Would not be as efficient. The socialization techniques of the Marine’s are so effective, because during basic training the men are stripped of everything from their civilian lives. The Marine’s are kept enclosed from modern society during training. They are basically brainwashed. Drill instructors apply physical and mental pressure to the men to start the process of destruction. The process of destruction is to erase the Marine’s former beliefs and confidence. Training to be a Marine is intense, constant abuse and insults. One of the main socialization techniques is motivation. “I can motivate a recruit and in third phase, if I tell him to jump off the third deck, he’ll jump off the third deck. Like I said before, it’s a captive audience and I can train that guy; I can get him to do anything I want him to do… They’re good kids and they’re out to do the right thing. We got some bad kids, but you know, we weed those out. But as far as motivation-here, we can motivate them to do anything we want, in recruit training” – USMC drill instructor Paris Island. The Marine Corps. Demand alertness at all times. Building the Marine’s confidence and teaching them the attitudes of group loyalty and
There are a number of tasks and basic provisions which are very important for the whole nation. One can easily get what it could be, but surely it belongs to the natural and social interests of the whole nation. Security and freedom are the key basic necessities of the nation, and for the survival of a nation there are a number of tasks which are done by the army / forces of the country. This also includes a variety of tasks which are considered as disgusting by ordinary people. In Gwynne Dyer “Anybody’s Son Will Do” These US Marine Corps socialize their soldiers through a hard well training course of two months called boot camp. They enable their soldiers to fight in their own self-respect while establishing the attitudes of group
7a. This book made a favorable impression on me and it will change the way I approach: people who question whether or not the Marine Corps should still exist. I can now easily explain the manner in how the
In the summer of 2015, I attended an encampment called Devil Pups. Devil Pups is a ten day long program in Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton that teaches American youth the values of discipline, teamwork, and motivation. The ten day encampment heavily resembles Marine Corps boot camp, though it is not meant to be a recruiting program for the Marine Corps. When I heard about the program, I signed up for the physical fitness test and left without knowing too much of what to expect, aside from the small details that I had heard from my peers. The instant you exit the bus at Devil Pups, you are greeted with the shouting of young Marines. Quickly, you learn that these Marines’ words are law and that you must follow them. The cycles of going to bed
A marine is an incredibly proud soldier of the sea. That being the starting need for the corps. Being a marine is a mindset and a way of life. Pride of the title that was made into what it is today from those before them, that is what gives confidence to marines. To treasure one another and do their up most to protect and build eachother is the comradarie and power of the marine corps. When exposed to danger or in war the will to fight and protect eachother shows that every marine is a rifleman. In 1950 a rifle platoon was formed from an artillery gun crew, cooks, bakers, and clerks lead by a lieutenant from motor transport; they functioned proficiently several times. Past events such as the Frozen chosin demostrate the marine
The military has the ability to provide a new set of social opportunities and is one of the few social institutions with the capability to initiate long-term change. This change begins immediately when the recruit enters basic training. At this time, the recruits are
Since all of the processes in the text were mentioned in the earlier Guided Discussion Forum, the intent here is to mention those (not all inclusive) personally used while in the Marine Corps. Having been a recipient as a learner to some of this type of learning, as well as delivering various course material to students in the same situation, it is easy to relate to this chapter. The motivational aspects of the instruction must take into consideration the audience you are instructing.
While in a Marine Infantry unit you will have a multitude of personnel assigned to your command and with you. These Marines come from every walk of life, all fifty states, and even different countries. This means you will have different religions and differences in culture mixed in. In a combat situation, there is no place for indifference. Through leadership you must teach them that there is no difference between the religion or culture, all Marines are green despite color or creed. It is through rigorous training and exercises that comradery and unit cohesion is built. One such example my unit went through was Advanced Urban Combat Course short version is called (AUC). This course is three weeks long of shooting and communication
Leadership is a quality that an individual possesses that allows them to influence others with positivity. The vision focused individual has the organization’s best interests in the forefront and the followers inspired to have a shared vision in the same fashion. When a Marine is promoted a shared vision helps all employees feel as if they are truly part of the organization. A newly promoted Marine must now lead those that they were once a part of. As a new leader, there may be complications of separating oneself from the now junior ranks. The challenge will be the gaining of trust and confidence as a new leader. Marines do have shared feelings of being a Marine but there is much more to leadership than a higher rank. Leadership traits
Southern California can be a difficult area to recruit in. With its fast paced lifestyle it tends to be hard finding recruits that will commit one hundred percent. Technology and social media have changed people’s views and ideas about today’s military. Compared to ten years ago, information has become a lot more accessible to the everyday person. Now days photos and information are transmitted almost instantaneously which can have both a positive and a negative effect on the way the military is portrayed today. Although technology and social media can have its negative effects, it is what todays generation uses in their everyday lives to communicate. The first thing we do when we wake up is check our phones and from then on it becomes a part
In the Marine Corps, young Marines are taught from the very beginning about combat stress and how to deal with it. They are put into stressful and fearful situations and they are expected to complete a specified task even though every fiber of their body says run or quit. Psychology calls this the “fight or flight” response. It is that split-second decision that people make when there is a conflict. The objective of the training is to instill the importance of mission completion and protection of your fellow Marines over your self-preservation and personal or spiritual feelings about war or death. Of course, it does not always work. There are many times that a person’s code of conduct or belief system overcomes their common sense and no matter how much evidence to the contrary you present to them they refuse to change their minds and in some cases they harden and become even more convicted to what they stand for. According to the English dictionary, that inability to change one’s mind and the discarding of any information contrary to what they believe to be true is commonly called stubbornness,
The military is unified under the ethos of mission and teamwork that helps to establish task and purpose while also molding a service members’ identity. Therefore, two issues military leaders must address are psychological capital and social loafing.
For the leader to set example by explaining the marines duty. For a great leader to informed their marines as themselves. Marines need to be more learned about mission objective. Primary mission to the troops welfare and mission accomplished. Leaders to always be on their marines and any signs of weakness. Never put an marine that could not do the mission the right way. Marines to know why it have to be this way, and for to always listen to their instructor. Marines will reflect your image of your commands and do not be careless. The marines are depending on you.
When I arrived to III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan, the unit lacked esprit de corps. The operational tempo was very high and many Marines barely had time to see their family. Although the mission always came first, many of these Marines were coming to Okinawa after deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, or both. I spent the first few weeks checking in and listening to the Marines. They immediately sensed that I cared about the mission but also about them personally. As we bonded as a unit, the Marines became more willing to perform the long hours necessary. I was able to show the Command the Marines were up to the task but that they also needed some time with their families.
I am a 38-year-old US marine who has served globally as a military policeman, guarded embassies and offered presidential security during the Bush administration. I believe in being determined and focused in all that I do, and this has made me pursue my education to standards that will make me a better professional. I hold a bachelor’s degree in homeland security, and I am currently persuading my masters on the same. In my career, I come across various challenges. To begin with, getting appointed as a marine Corp is involving since one need to have a high sense of integrity, aptitude and be physically fit. A good marine hence has to engage in constant exercise, be disciplined and always be attentive to his surroundings. I exercise about six
The second principle that I acquired from the Marines was the spirit of determination and commitment. In the Marines, you will endure and sacrifice for your fellow Marine. It certainly was not fun to work your butt off to only pay for someone else’s mistake. It is easy to complain, but instead, you go help the weaker Marine in your unit and teach them how to become faster and grow stronger. Marines that complain are thinking about themselves and their own welfare. As a Marine, you are
