Anxiety Disorders
The majority of Americans suffer from anxiety disorders that could occur at birth or may develop over time due to environmental factors. Anxiety disorders are a group of mental conditions that require licensed healthcare practitioners to recognize and treat properly. Healthcare providers and nurses must be well trained on recognizing the signs and symptoms of anxiety disorders in a wide variety of patients.
Anxiety disorders may sometimes be difficult to differentiate from normal stress. Many people are worried and exhibit symptoms of stress in their daily lives. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI, 2017) explained that many types of anxiety disorders exist, which may be classified by symptoms. NAMI (2017) described patients with excessive worrying, difficulty concentrating, and nausea as having generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This is a common type of anxiety disorder. Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is defined by an intense fear of social situations, accompanied by irrational concerns about humiliation, reported NAMI (2017). Patients with social anxiety disorder may experience a panic attack when forced into an unwanted social situation (NAMI, 2017). These patients fear social situations. A similar disorder is panic disorder; patients undergo panic attacks, which are similar to heart attacks (NAMI, 2017). According to these authors, panic attacks may involve chest pains, heart palpitations, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Panic disorder is only one form of anxiety disorder that patients may have. NAMI (2017) explained further how some patients may be diagnosed with phobias, because they have extreme reactions and irrational fears to specific places, events, or objects. Many other types of anxiety disorders have been classified. Other types include agoraphobia, selective mutism, separation anxiety disorder, and a substance abuse (NAMI, 2017). In order to properly identify the type of anxiety disorder the patient might present with, nurses should be knowledgeable about the causes of anxiety
Anxiety is the automatic and natural body's response to danger. It may be unpleasant but it helps you focus your attention, prepare for action and solve problems. However, Anxiety Symptoms can be overwhelming to the extent of interfering with daily activities, relationships and careers. This symbolizes an Anxiety Disorder. Anxiety Disorders are irrational fears that are not based on facts. It can give you the perception that your life or a situation in your life is worse than it really is. Anxiety can upgrade to a mental illness that causes distress and interferes with your ability to lead a normal life.
Anxiety is an extreme mental disorder when an anxious feeling does not subside and is constantly ongoing without a particular reason (Blue, 2016). This mental health condition can be extremely serious and overwhelming and makes it very hard to cope with daily life (Blue, 2016).

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. It helps some one deal with a tense situation in the office, study harder for an exam, keep focused on an important speech. In general, it helps some one cope. But when anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it has become a disabling disorder.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18% of the population. (National Institute of Mental Health). Anxiety is the Central Nervous System’s response to a sense of threat or danger. For those that feel an anxiety attack or episode, it triggers a “Fight or Flight” response. When we are in danger, this response is very helpful to help us get out of the situation. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder caused by a horrific event like living through a natural disaster, being in a war, or surviving a terrorist attack. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), is marked by repetitive behaviors such as washing your hands three times before eating anything.
