Anxiety Anxiety is a disorder with uncontrollable, excessive, and persistent worrying occurring on more days than not over a six month period (Baldwin, 2016). This type of anxiety is known as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) with a minimum of three or more of the following symptoms: Easily fatigued, difficulty with concentration, muscle tension, sleep problems, and feeling hyper or restless (Dunphy, Winland-Brown, Porter, & Thomas, 2015, p. 1028). This paper will discuss GAD in adults including: (think this sounds better with a colon) symptoms, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, potential complications, and non-pharmacological treatment. Potential Complications Depression and anxiety often coincide and are major risk factors for substance abuse and suicide. Many young adults turn to alcohol or illicit substances to calm their anxiety (Dixon, Stevens, & Viana, 2014). Alcoholism and chronic substance abuse may be the result of anxiety disorder. Panic disorder is a complication of anxiety disorders with recurrent, intense, short episodes of panic-level psychological and physical symptoms of anxiety (Dunphy et al., 2016, p. 1034).
Non-Pharmacological Treatment Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps patients become aware of their incorrect ideas that lead to anxiety and they learn to alter these ideas. Patient Education Patients and families should be educated about their options for treatment of GAD. Patients should be informed of medications available as well as different types of therapies such as CBT. Medication overuse, dependency, and side effects should be discussed at length before prescribing new medications. The patient and family need to be informed that medication alone only will not resolve anxiety and some amount of self-help and action of the patient are required (Dunphy et al., 2015).
