What is Civil Disobedience
The refusal to obey an unjust demand for a moral belief and the refusing of the violence that may occur, are fundamental for civil disobedience. As civil disobedience is to peacefully reject a law, strong set of opinion, or something not fair. Civil disobedience can be found any where from a fictional greek story, to a real life actor who cares about the safety of the environment, to an ordinary person living their life.
Antigone is disobeying a man’s law, which was established by her uncle and ruler Creon; for one of her moral beliefs. Her reasoning is that of her two brothers whom’ ultimately killed each other, one of which was buried with a full funeral ritual. While the other brother suffered being left

Woodley wrote a speech after being taken into custody, “The way to heal is with love and empathy and compassion”; woodley was peacefully protesting for the safety of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation against Energy Transfer Equity Co-Founder & CEO Kelcy Warren who was working under President Trump for the pipeline project. She used her words and actions against the will of obedience for a moral belief, which concluded in an unjust arrest. Not every act of civil disobedience can be taken into account, as its the people involved, the situation, and why is it happening. One act of civil disobedience that was never really taken into account is that of an ordinary person, who’ never had any kind of impact on the world. For this story, i'm dwelling into my past. When i was a baby, my parents split up. My mom tells me, that my dad never really wanted much to do with me. So drastically, that one day, my mom lied to my dad; as she found him at the bar and set me down on the floor in my little baby carrier. She then told my dad that it was his day to take care of me, as it was in the terms they set up in court. My mom left claiming she had running to do, little did my dad know that was all a test and my mom did all her running with me earlier that day. 15 minutes later, i'm still sitting on the bar floor with my dad; until my mom comes in grabbing me. Putting her moral belief to get me out of that
Antigone justified her civil disobedience of giving her dead brother Polyneices the decent burial which is against King Kreon's decree, by knowing well that she has violated the state's law by burying her brother. She then allegedly carries out an act against King Kreon's state law; but it is also an act in accordance to her own conscience
Civil disobedience is the refusal to obey laws, in hopes to get them changed for the better of humanity/ civilization of that specific or general community. Malala Yousafzai is a great example of civil disobedience. The whole reason she was shot in 2012 was because she dared to ‘fight’ back against the taliban by going to school and trying to make other countries aware of the harm that the taliban was causing to the homes and lives of her people.
Civil disobedience is the refusal to comply with certain laws as a peaceful form of political protest. In Antigone, civil disobedience is evident in Antigone’s actions towards Creon. Creon’s decision to leave Polynices’ body in a state of unrest angers Antigone, and she decides to take action against Creon’s decision. Antigone’s rebellion most closely resembles Ghandi’s idea of civil disobedience, in which one disobeys laws through peaceful protest. Antigone’s actions are almost in contrast to the beliefs of Henry David Thoreau. Thoreau believes that people should not participate in injustice, but they also do not need to reject injustice. Antigone’s decision to act against Creon’s decree directly refutes Thoreau’s thoughts.
In this ancient Greek play, it tells the story of a girl named Antigone, who buries her dead brother despite it being made illegal by Creon, king of Thebes. King Creon himself is the example of tyranny in this story, having been sworn to the throne after a civil war left the previous heirs to the throne dead (A.K.A: Antigone’s brothers.) Creon uses his power to prohibit the proper burial of one of the brothers, Polyneices, purely because he thought him to be a disgrace, not even caring about what other people thought. Then, when Antigone attempts to bury her brother, she is harshly punished and not given a second chance, despite being the sister of the one she tried to bury. Creon does everything to justify himself, even breaking bonds with his own son, Haemon, because of it.
In the first scene of the play, Antigone makes quite clear that she is going to bury her brother,
Antigone is an honorable character in this story of love and rebellion. The only thing that she does is disobey an order that is unjust and bury the remains of her

The human struggle to defy what is intrinsically wrong but established as permissible is openly apparent in the initial scenes of the play strong-willed and brave-hearted Antigone reveals her plan to unlawfully bury her brother, only to be rejected and dismantled by cautious and law-abiding Ismene. Although Ismene is saddened by her brother's fate, nomos renders her helpless; social constructs have influenced her belief that their standings as women and individual citizens are no match for state law. Consequently, she is appalled that Antigone would even think of defying Creon, believing their brother's fate is out of their hands. She even warns her sister, "tis witless to be over busy."1 Her chance to rightfully bury Polyneices, and more importantly, to realize her innate responsibility to her kin, is temporarily barred by human-allotted law and practice.
Antigone’s motivation is love for her family- she puts it above all else. In fact, she is willing to sacrifice her life to defend that love. Antigone goes to great lengths to bury her deceased brother, who according to an edict issued by King Creon, died in dishonor, consequently making it illegal for anyone to bury his body. Through her actions to comply with her motivations, it is revealed that Antigone’s actions are also fueled by her strong beliefs that, first, the gods’ laws
Antigone decides to go against society and do what she believes is right. Antigone goes to her sister and tells her that she wants to bury their brother even though Creon told the city-state not to. She buries them anyway because she knew Creon to be wrong. She gets caught, but she defends herself stating that not burying him is wrong.
Antigone is a woman in the context of fifth-century Athens, Greece who challenges the socio-political orders of the city in name of a blood relationship, which through her eyes is sacred in the name of the gods. The divine law says that all man should be buried following the proper rites. In the ancient Greek household, women are the ones who must do the proper funeral rites and bury the
What is civil disobedience? Civil disobedience is the opposing of a law one finds unjust by refusing to follow it and accepting the consequences. So many people have performed acts of civil disobedience from Martin Luther King Jr. to everyday people. But what people did as civil disobedience a hundred years ago is completely different today. It is such an important part of a free society because it helps to define what a free society is, shows the true meaning of freedom of speech, and shows the government that citizens are not willing to follow an unjust law without violence.
In Sophocles, Antigone, translated by Ruby Blondell, the main character, Antigone, rebelled against the unethical treatment of her brothers, while Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. also rebelled against the unethical treatment of African Americans in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. Both Antigone and King Jr. sacrificed their lives to highlight the unethical and unjust treatment in their societies. However, King Jr. uses civil disobedience to achieve his goals to end inequality for African Americans in the United States and is assassinated, while Antigone uses her religion as motivation to bury her brothers and ultimately commit suicide as she so strongly disapproves the actions which the King of Thebes, Kreon. King Jr.’s tactics were more effective than Antigone’s as King Jr. was able to pave the way for equality for African Americans in the United States, while Antigone’s tactics only left Creon to feel guilty and led to no change in her society.
Civil disobedience is the purposeful violation of a law to show that it is unconstitutional or morally defective. In the plays, Antigone and Trifles, the female main characters commit an act of civil disobedience. The plays are respectively written by Sophocles and Susan Glaspell. Antigone, the main character of Antigone, protects her dead brother's honor as she disobeys the laws of King Creon. Mrs. Hale, the main character of Trifles prevents a neighbor from being charged with homicide as she breaks the law in front of two lawmen-The Sheriff and the County Attorney. Both characters' crimes are similar; however, their differences lie in how they handle their violations. Antigone
In the play Antigone, written by Sophocles, King Creon created a law that denied proper burial rites to anyone who invaded or betrayed the city of Thebes. Antigone defied this law by burying her brother, Polynices, after he was harshly accused of being a traitor. Both Creon and Antigone showed a tenacious passion toward their perception of justice, unwilling to accept that honoring the law and honoring the individual conscience were both justified in different ways. The stubbornness that they shared led them both to meet their downfalls, which conveyed the idea that being too proud to accept guidance from others ultimately leads to dire consequences.
