Antifederalists Vs Federalists

When attempting to ratify the Constitution the delegates were split into two different parties which were the Federalists and Antifederalists. The main difference between the two parties as stated in We the People was that the Federalists wanted a strong national government while the Antifederalists wanted a strong state government and were actually against the Constitution that was proposed at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 (Ginsberg, 56). There were three main areas of contention between the groups which was representation, tyranny or unjust rule by those in power, and how they should limit government power. Representation was a major focus in the ratification process. The Antifederalists wanted the representation to be a true representation of the people, and they stated that it could only be achieved through small republics such as the states. Both sides were frightened by the thought of a tyrannical government but they had different views on how to deal with it. Tyranny is an “oppressive government that employs cruel and unjust use of power and authority” (Ginsberg, 59). The Antifederalists thought that overtime the individuals in authority would gain power to the extent that they would rule with tyranny over the general populous.
