Gun Control Policy; an Easy Target On December 14, 2012, one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in the little town of Newton, Connecticut. The shooter, twenty-year-old Adam Lanza, managed to kill twenty children ages six and seven, as well as 6 adult staff members within just eleven minutes. According to New York Daily News, “the shooter stormed the…school…and fired a total of 154 rounds.” “All but two of the 26 students and staffers massacred in [sic] at Sandy Hook Elementary School died from ‘multiple gunshot wounds,’ according to death certificates released (Hutchinson.)” As horrifying as this incident may seem, it is not isolated. There have already been 186 mass shootings this year …show more content…
In fact, there is no federally mandated waiting period to purchase and possess a gun. Furthermore, only five states have laws requiring a waiting period on firearm purchases. As stated by The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, “federal law allows a dealer to deliver a firearm to a purchaser as soon as a background check is completed, or after three business days, even if a background check has not been completed.” Each year the FBI estimates that this lack of a waiting period leads to over 3,000 guns being sold to people who are ineligible to have them. In turn, the FBI refers those 3,000 plus cases to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to retrieve those ill-gotten weapons. With a more rigorous application process and a longer waiting period, these errors could be greatly lessened saving taxpayer money and potentially saving …show more content…
Although The National Rifle Association, America’s largest, private gun advocacy group, will argue that “Studies indicate that firearms are used over 2 million times a year for personal protection...”(Lapidos.), the Violence Policy Center (backed by data from the FBI and the National Crime Victimization Survey) reports that “…the total number of self-protective behaviors involving a firearm by victims of attempted or completed violent crimes or property crimes… comes to an annual average of 67,740.” That’s a rather large discrepancy suggesting that the number of guns actually used in self-defense is much less than the NRA would have us believe. Clearly, “as the VPC paper states, ‘guns are rarely used to kill criminals or stop crimes.’(Lapidos.)” In contrast, Americans are now more likely to die from gun violence than a car accident (Samuels.) As documented by the Gun Violence Archive, year-to-date in 2015 there have already been 7,347 deaths and 14,777 injuries. Of those deaths and injuries, 416 of them were children under the age of eleven and 1,424 were teens between the ages of twelve and
Sometime back in 2012, there was a reported tragedy that struck the elementary school at sandy hook, Connecticut. It is alleged that a man dressed in black walked into the school compound and opened fire disrupting the serene environment of the school. In the incident, after a few minutes, 26 people lay dead, 20 of them being young children aged between 6 to7 years. Among the grownups that perished were the school principal Dawn Hoch Sprung, and the school’s psychologist Mary Sherlock (Parmet, 2013). The killer identified as Adam Lanza a 20-year-old man also died. Found separately was his mother’s body, at a residence in town. It was compared to another incidence that had occurred in 2007, a similar event of shooting at Virginia where 32 people perished. The young were said to have been directed by their teachers into bathrooms and closets at the onset of the shooting. The incident occurred in
Not one person from Sandy Hook, Connecticut ever thought this sort of event would ever happen. On December 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot twenty children and six adult staff members in a mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Before the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Lanza shot and killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at his home in Newtown, Connecticut. After the shooting, Lanza successfully committed suicide before he was detained. Which left, the state, officials, and the entire country to question why Lanza would do such a horrible act of violence to innocent children and staff members of the school. Also, questioning the security of schools, and even our country. There are many conspiracies of the
Sandy Hook was a chaotic town on December 14, 2012 where gunman, Adam Lanza, shot and killed twenty children and six staff members. Many family members of the victims are still mourning the loss of their children and loved ones. Over 500 lives were affected after this tragedy (Gay). The author gives an interview of the superintendent of the school in which he shows what he did after he heard the news of the shooting. “I was in the district office and my secretary told me the bus company reported a
14, 2012. 20 lives were taken away between the ages 6-7 including 6 staff members by 20-year old Adam Lanza ( David Morgan). The Sandy Hook Elementary shooting was one of the worst shootings in U.S. history that prompted the controversial debate over gun control and whether there should be safer regulations on guns. Similarly, six years after the tragic shooting of the Sandy Hook, The Parkland, FL sought the same experience of an active shooter Nicholas Cruz 19-year old, contributing to the lost of 17 lives. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students took action by protesting the rights to a stricter gun legislation that should have been enacted to protect the lives of students all around and stop the massive school shootings by letting the hands of the mentally disabled gain access to destructive weapons and cause fatal consequences at the end (“How Many More School Shootings”). Therefore, due to the series of school shootings gun laws should be
United States history of deadly massacres. Gun violence has always been a hot topic because of constant crimes involving firearms over the years. Recent history has alluded even more debate to possibly create or reform even more gun laws. In the story of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, the New York Times addressed what had happened. This shooting killed twenty six people, twenty in which were children ranging from the ages of five to ten years old. Adam Lanza, who ended up committing suicide, was identified as the gunman who was armed with semiautomatic pistols and a semiautomatic rifle. Another example is from the Los Angeles Times that covered a 2012 Colorado shooting in a movie theater. The gunman, suspected to be James E. Holmes, killed twelve people and injured dozens more in the shooting in a packed movie theater in Aurora. Authorities said Holmes was dressed in full body armor and used a form of tear gas on the crowd before opening fire with multiple guns. In addition, the most recent shooting occurred on May 2014 in Isla Vista near the University of Santa Barbara. This shooting resulted in seven deaths, thirteen wounded, and the murderer himself a gunshot wound to his head. He used three semiautomatic handguns and more than four hundred rounds of ammunition at his side. The recent history of shooting massacres is only a sample size of the whole history of gun violence in
In a speech regarding the Charleston, South Carolina shooting in June of 2015, President Obama stated, “More than 11,000 people were killed by gun violence in 2013 alone.” After the Sandy Hook shooting, in Newtown, Connecticut with a death toll of 26, Congress has still failed to pass these regulations which 90% of Americans wish to have. While tightening the gun control may not guarantee the complete absence of mass shootings or gun violence and crime, it has definately been shown to significantly reduce these rates. America is in need of tighter gun control laws because current regulations do not deter violence and crime, and the interpretation of the constitutional right has since been misconstrued.
My party is the Democratic Party. My party would believe in the Gun Control domestic policy. The policy aims to put strict observance of law guiding acquisition and use of firearms in the United States. Possession of weapons in public spaces and within reach of many people in homes have seen incidents of unwarranted shootings and killings. Such incidents have taken place from elementary schools through to colleges. Additionally, there have been incidents of police shooting unarmed civilians hence the necessity to relook at the whole issue of gun acquisition, possession and use. Despite the fact that owning guns is an individual right because it ensures protection, those who own or posses such guns must use them without trampling on the rights of other citizens (Carroll, & Sage Publications, 2003). Also, deaths related to gun suicides constitute two-thirds of gun deaths in America. As such, the party would
There has been an average of one school shooting every week in America since the Sandy Hook shooting. On the fourteenth of December, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, 20-year-old Adam Lanza not only killed his mother in her home, but also twenty children and six members of staff at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This was to be the third deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. The Huffington Post reports that as of 2014, there have been over 200 school shootings. These have resulted in at least 94 deaths and over 156 serious and minor injuries. And, with an issue as emotive and contentious as the murder of school children, the question has been frequently asked: why do school shootings happen?
The occurence of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting of December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut. The gunman, was 20-year-old Adam Lana, who first shot and killed his mother at their Newtown home. He then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School where he fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members. As first responders arrived, Lana committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. The shooting began at approximately 9:30 a.m. Sandy Hook was the deadliest mass shooting at a high school or grade school in U.S. history and the second-deadliest mass shooting by a single person in U.S. history, after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre. This shooting yet again assured the nation that gun violence is still as big of a problem as it was back in the late 90’s when 27 teenagers got killed in another mass killing in Columbine, Colorado. We as a nation must stand up and oppose mass murdering because these actions are not only unjust but inhuman as well. The increase in gun violence can be decreased by, identifying the regions in the country where the most gun violence occurs and restricting their access to limiting or monitoring the availability of guns and ammunition.
On December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, a 20 years old boy Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 school children and 6 staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School, after shooting his mother at his home. At arrival of police, he shot and killed himself too (Edition.cnn.com). This incident left whole of America in grievance and a debate reopened on gun control in US. Though this was not the only incident of its type but was one of the most fatal ones that struck America. The gun control issue became the most disputed issue in America. The pro-guns rights activists took shelter under the second amendment and argued that this is a constitutional right of every citizen to carry guns and concealed weapons and there are almost 211 million estimated firearms in the United States.
With the popular culture providing positive images of guns, the United States has a gun prevalence that is very rare in the modern world. While many people appreciate the “gun culture”, guns are heavily involved in violence in the United States. According to U.S. Department of Justice, since 1960, more than 750,000 Americans have died under firearms, including homicides, suicides, and unintentional injuries. The figure 1 provides a comprehensive survey of U.S. violent crimes for the period from 1993 to 2011.This figure illustrates that from 1993 to 2011, about 60% to 70% of homicides were associated with a firearm. Over the same period, between 6% and 9% of all nonfatal violence, with about 20% to 30% of robberies and 22% to 32% of aggravated assaults involving a firearm.
Due to recent mass shootings in the U.S. many Americans fear for their safety. Many Americans fear to go out to movie theaters, restaurants, and even their children 's schools. In the article "Will Sikh temple shooting spark U.S. conversation on gun control", Peter Greier claims "Americans are deeply split about the prospect of new gun laws, and tragic events such as recent mass killings do not change voter opinions." Gun control laws should be any more strict because it would be violating the Second Amendment and the right to bare arms to protect yourself against criminals.
Tragedies force us to re-evaluate our current laws and how effective they are at protecting the American population. Many believe that enacting strict regulations on the ownership and utilization of firearms is the next step toward a safe and peaceful society. On the other hand, many believe that enacting such strict regulations would be a detriment to public safety. The question we need to ask ourselves is, how much do we value a supposed benefit to public safety over our personal freedom to use firearms for self-defense? The United States should not adopt laws that place heavy restrictions on the usage and ownership of firearms because the freedom and safety of the American people is worth preserving, regardless of the immoral actions a fraction of the population is willing to commit.
On December 14, 2012. Tension rose as horror filled the air. The alone shooter name Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hooks Elementary School with the intent to kill students, faculty, and staff. While the teachers were in the classroom teaching they heard gunfire erupt. The gun fire started to grow louder and closer to the classroom. So, one terrified teacher locked her students in a small bathroom telling the students to be quiet. Other students formed a single filed line ran out of the school past the yellow police tape with their hands held high in the air looking for safety. Many family members watching in disbelief, looked on wondering if their child is safe.
Many Americans are sick of gun violence and want the government to establish gun-control. When really gun-control isn't necessary. The only reason that it isn't necessary because the crime that goes on really doesn't involve weapons. According to the National Rifle Association (NRA) (accessed Oct. 6, 2014), guns are used for self defense 2.5 million times a year. The state police cannot protect everyone at one time. I understand that they have many different units for back up, but guns are associated with taking on self defense. Even though you might be charged with homicide if the attacker dies. If you can prove that the incident lead up to you happening to use the gun, then you
