Gun Control Policy; an Easy Target On December 14, 2012, one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in the little town of Newton, Connecticut. The shooter, twenty-year-old Adam Lanza, managed to kill twenty children ages six and seven, as well as 6 adult staff members within just eleven minutes. According to New York Daily News, “the shooter stormed the…school…and fired a total of 154 rounds.” “All but two of the 26 students and staffers massacred in [sic] at Sandy Hook Elementary School died from ‘multiple gunshot wounds,’ according to death certificates released (Hutchinson.)” As horrifying as this incident may seem, it is not isolated. In fact, there is no federally mandated waiting period to purchase and possess a gun. Furthermore, only five states have laws requiring a waiting period on firearm purchases. As stated by The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, “federal law allows a dealer to deliver a firearm to a purchaser as soon as a background check is completed, or after three business days, even if a background check has not been completed.” Each year the FBI estimates that this lack of a waiting period leads to over 3,000 guns being sold to people who are ineligible to have them. Although The National Rifle Association, America’s largest, private gun advocacy group, will argue that “Studies indicate that firearms are used over 2 million times a year for personal protection...”(Lapidos.), the Violence Policy Center (backed by data from the FBI and the National Crime Victimization Survey) reports that “…the total number of self-protective behaviors involving a firearm by victims of attempted or completed violent crimes or property crimes… comes to an annual average of 67,740.” That’s a rather large discrepancy suggesting that the number of guns actually used in self-defense is much less than the NRA would have us believe. Clearly, “as the VPC paper states, ‘guns are rarely used to kill criminals or stop crimes.’(Lapidos.)” In contrast, Americans are now more likely to die from gun violence than a car accident (Samuels.) As documented by the Gun Violence Archive, year-to-date in 2015 there have already been 7,347 deaths and 14,777 injuries. Of those deaths and injuries, 416 of them were children under the age of eleven and 1,424 were teens between the ages of twelve and
