Anteaters are edentates. Edentates are animals that do not have teeth. Anteaters do not eat apples, but they eat about 30,000 ants and terminates a day. The anteater uses its large sharp claws to rip open an anthill or termite mound. Then he uses a very long, sticky tongue to catch them. Anteaters walk on their knuckles so their long claws don’t hurt them. A baby anteater is called a pup and rides on its mom’s back for about a year. When an anteater feels threatened, it will stand on its hind legs, hold its arms out wide and show its claws. Can you stand up tall, hold out your arms and spread your fingers to make yourself as big and scary?
Bats are the only mammals that can fly. Other mammals can glide a short distance from tree to tree, but

Semiaquatic means they live on land and water. Their big appetites for tree and plant roots are causing marsh erosion and destruction. A marsh is a low area of land that is always wet. A marsh is a home to many other creatures like crabs, snails, turtles and dragonflies. When plants and roots are removed, the marsh is destroyed. The nutria is not endangered or threatened. It is an animal that is now considered invasive in some areas of the southern United States. Invasive means they have become a large group of animals that have spread out and are destroying their own habitats by eating plant roots that are important to keep a marsh alive. Do you think humans are …show more content…
They are ungulates, which means they have hooves and are related to horses and zebras. A group of them is called a herd or a crash. They have a symbiotic relationship with oxpeckers – a bird that eats ticks off the rhino and squawks loudly when danger approaches. Symbiotic means two animals that help each other. Rhinos are herbivores - some like grass, others like the leaves from trees and bushes. They are one of the most endangered animals on earth. There are rhinos with one horn and some with two. Rhinos are intelligent, have a good sense of smell and hearing, but poor eyesight. Some rhinos have a prehensile upper lip. Prehensile means the rhino can grab things like when you use your fingers. They use their lip to pull small pieces of leaves from thorny bushes. Can you pick up a pencil with only your upper
“The creation of a structure of good and evil…[is] a function of intelligence-unquestionably the ultimate evil may [be] the destruction of conscious intelligence.”(8) In the psychoanalytical story ‘The Large Ant’, by Howard Fast, a multitude of facets portray how fear morphed history throughout time. ‘The Large Ant’ locates itself some years after the Second World war, atom bombs having been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With a communist regime on the rise, ‘The Large Ant’ parallels Cold War hostilities and breaks apart the intentions of a humanity through the use of theories, including classical conditioning, defence mechanisms, and group influences.
In a land far far away there were two anthills. Only two in the land. The anthills were not aware of their existence. In one anthill brimming with collected resources and a fair queen lived the Opie ants. In the other there were corrupted a corrupted queen who made the ants work until their death to satisfy her. Those were the Totie ants. Some of the Totie ants were good and hardworking but some turned evil just like the queen. The Totie ants and the Opie ants had the same anthills but different leader. The Opies had an abundance of food; whereas the Totie ants were starving because the queen only looked after her own well-being and ate all the food. The Totie ants were miserable with their leaders and eventually there
The article “If Only We Liked Nutria Meat” by Sam Irwin focuses on how nutria have affected Louisiana since they got here. Starting with the idea of Cajuns eating nutria if that happening the nutria population would really start to drop, but that does not seem likely to occur. So instead of us feasting on them, they are feasting on our marshes and wetlands. “Louisiana is losing a football field of wetlands every hour” to this pest that were brought here from Argentina (Irwin 53). The article then goes on to explain how nutria rats got loose in Louisiana.
The new record-holder for the fastest flying animal is a bat from brazil. Brazilian free-tailed bats can reach up to ground speeds of 160 kilometers per hour. Brazilian bats seem to flap their wings in a similar fashion to ultrafast birds, and a smooth body, narrow wings and a wingspan longer than most bats does a lot to.
Pheidole Megacephala are commonly found in cool to warm enviroments, such as subtropical and tropical regions. Regions such as southern parts of North America, Central America, Africa, and Islands of the Americas. In their colony, it is consisted minor workers, fighters, soliders, and obviously the queen. Each of the groups of ant play a major role in order to advance their colony either territorial or food wise. When on the hunt for food the minor workers are in charge of bring the food needed or the larvaes or the queen. Fighters they remain near the nest just incase of any threats from another species. Also, the fighters help the minor workers protect larger food from other ant colonies. Minor workers their job is to patrol the ground, search
Nutria are large semiaquatic rodents that appear to look like beavers with long, thin tails, however they are considered to be an invasive species. They survive in swamplands and typically other wetlands surrounding Louisiana. These organisms have created a problem to the Louisiana environment by creating openings in the marsh vegetation that sustains the Louisiana coastline and by weakening flood control levees that protect low-lying areas. Nutria are also known for their high procreative rates. Because of this, maintaining a well balance between the factors of supply and demand are difficult. Preventive measures and other available techniques have been presented in order to alleviate ongoing damage and to reduce the levels of damage already
When one considers important events in US history, things like the American Revolution, the Westward Expansion, or the Civil Rights Movement come to mind. One in particular that I find compelling, is the creation of the Women Airforce Service Pilots better known as WASPs, during World War II. I find it interesting because prior to this time and after this period, woman had a very limited social status. But for a brief time in the 1940s, women achieved not only job equality but went above and beyond what society expected in many areas. The WASPs were one such group who broke barriers in more ways than one.
them clean. Because, an egg is tiny and is about 1 millimeter long it needs
They have adapted to this environment by their long wings. Their wings help to get away from predators, catch prey, or to migrate if they have to. The hairs on their toes help with flying. Their legs are short and strong so they help this bat climb. Their fur makes less drag, making them fly faster.
Termites are insects that live in wood. If your home or business becomes infested with termites, they can cause significant damage—structurally and financially. Every year, termites cause an average of $5 billion worth of damage in the U.S. The first step in protecting your home from bug problems is identifying the termites that are infesting the building. The most common type of termite is subterranean termites.
Anthrax is caused by Bacillus anthracis, a bacterium that forms spores and can survive long periods of time in extreme conditions. Once it enters into a host, the spores germinate and reproduce bacteria that contaminate the body through the blood stream. To suppress the host’s immune system, the bacteria produces Protective Antigen (PA), Lethal Factor (LF), and Edema Factor (EF). [4] These toxins target macrophages, which ingest invading microorganisms. The assault of the target cell is then performed by three non-toxic proteins. The Lethal Factor or the Edema Factor teams up with the Protective Agent, since the Protective Agent transports the Lethal Factor or Edema Factor into the cell. Inside the cell, the Lethal Factor converts ATP to cyclic AMP, while the Edema Factor disables a family of proteins known as the MAPKK. This shuts down the host’s immune system and eventually leads to its death. [4]
The Apis mellifera, or Western Honeybee is responsible for 1 in every 3 mouthfuls of food in the United States. The honeybee has become the unpaid laborer in the agricultural system, by adding more than $15 billion in value farming each year. Bees are so important that a Whole Foods store in Rhode Island, as part of a campaign to highlight the importance of honeybees, temporarily removed from its produce section all the food that depended on pollinators (of 453 items, 237 vanished).
Do you ever wonder how many species of honey bees there are? Are they originally native Canadians? Why don’t we see honeybees anymore? What is their role of honeybees in the ecosystem? What has affected their population?
The most commonly used disease used as a weapon is Anthrax. Anthrax is a deadly disease that infects your skin and internal body organs. Anthrax can be caused by contact, inhalation and injection. Symptoms that are caused are skin blisters, fever, chest pain, shortage of breath, nausea and vomiting. 95% of cases are skin infections. Depending on the form of infection death can be as high as an 80% chance. Most common causes of infection are when animals eat infected plants and humans eat the infected animals . The deadliest bio weapon is Smallpox. Smallpox is an mass killing infection that has crazy symptoms and a high death rate. Symptoms include bumps all over the skin with a thick and opaque fluid often with a depression or dimple in the
Everyone is familiar with the state of armed conflict that is war, and for as long as there has been civilization there has been war. Upon first glance, Henry David Thoreau’s “The Battle of the Ants” seems like a simple descriptive story of a battle between two different species of ants, one red and one black, but if one were to further inspect the text, they could see that Thoreau uses the ants and their battle as a satirical allegory for human conflict. Thoreau chooses to use ants as a metaphor to make it clear to the reader that war is futile, pointless, and a waste of life.
