Chapter Two
Ann-Marie’s Point of View
I didn’t sleep for the rest of the night, instead I finished a 12th grade workbook mother had bought me a while back, excelling is something I have a passion for. I figure, once I graduate i’ll have enough scholarships to coast through college and make a life for myself.

I rush out the door of the new apartment, eager to start at yet another new school. New teachers, different curriculum… And new people. I guess. I run to school, as it’s only about a block away, and i’m astonished at the size, it had separate buildings and wings, it looks more like a college campus than it does a high school. I ponder how Mother could ever afford this, she works as a pharmacist at Walmart, not

“Umm, yeah, thanks. Do you mind telling me what time it is?” I smile back at her, she looks at her watch.
“It’s 7:45, you have plenty of time honey!” My eyes widen, I still need to find my locker, ladies room AND be early to class, I rush off after thanking Cara, on my way out I almost bump into someone. Looking up, I see it’s the same boy from earlier, he smirks at me…
“Really couldn’t wait to see me again, princess?” He asks in a snobby tone, I don’t react so I roughly push past him and I hear him gasp.

I walk into class five minutes early, and two people occupy the space, the teacher and another student, I ignore them and take a seat in the very front. Where I can see.
“Who are you? What school did you come from? Why are you here?” I look up to see a tall girl with black glasses and a pencil skirt. I ignore her, not worth my time. I get out my English books and place them on my desk, the bell rings and a flood of students come in.
I feel a presence beside me, as someone stares at me, I look. The boy from earlier is smirking at me.
“Now you’re just stalking me…” He whispers, I roll my eyes and the teacher clears his throat and I snap to attention. The boy seems unaffected, poke, jab, poke. Then he pulls on my ponytail and I raise my hand.
“May I be excused?” The teacher nods and I hustle out of the classroom, and i’m soon followed by
“ You’re a- how shall I put it? A thorn in several teachers sides. Your presence disturbs their instruction.”. (211)
However, it is important to mention, that there are good public schools. Subsequently, there’s just not enough space for every child. In the film we meet five students. The first student we met was Anthony. Anthony, lived with his grandmother. In addition, Anthony lost his father to drugs. Similarly, Anthony’s mother is not mentioned. Therefore, Anthony was held back a grade. The next student we meet is Daisy. Daisy, has dreams of becoming a nurse or a veterinary. Daisy lives with both parents. However, her mother is the only on employed in the home. Although, Daisy’s, prospects will pose a challenge as the junior high school she will attend feeds into a notoriously failing school. Nevertheless, Daisy and her teacher are hopeful and confident that daisy’s efforts will be a positive determiner.
“Okay!” he said cheerfully as he trotted into the living room. I checked time once more. It read 9:09. The suspense was building.
I feel a warm presemce on the back of my neck. I turn and find the guy who came in late. He points to my seat, then himself. I shake my head and turn back. Again, he taps me and motion to my seat and then himself. I once again ignore him and return to my conversation with my brother. Before the guy can disturb me again the bell rings and the class starts to empty. I grab my bag and head towards the door.
Anastasia Lynn was a sophomore at Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. The school sat in the middle of nowhere surrounded by nothing. No matter which direction you looked there was just trees and old dusty brick campus buildings. A trip to the inner city required two hours traveling time to and from. The only place near the all-girls college was Crowder college. They weren’t much better. The drive home to Indianapolis was worse. The trip was just short enough to make in one day with no overnight stops and just long enough to get tired of looking at the unchanging scenery of randomly placed houses and watching grass dry. Because of this Anastasia very seldom went home, but this year was different. Fall break had aligned with her twenty first
The boy just stares at me. “Who are you?” He asks. I don’t know what to make of him.
"My class meets in here at 11:30," I continued. "I showed up early on accident."
She sobbed as if she were a mere child and lost in a new city, because in her head, she was. In reality, she was not a child; she was a freshman in college only two hours from home. Those two hours felt like too many, especially separated from her family. She found herself in room 512, Florida Avenue Residence Hall fully immersed in isolation and dependency. Nevertheless, I knew, at this moment in time, this was my turn to twist, bend and to recast all of my hopes into success.

I like it when you smile,” I say, not quite listening to my own voice when I have distractions. “My smile, huh?” he answers lightheartedly. “Yeah.
The man closest to me turns, his blonde hair glares into my eyes from the sunlight.
It was a bleak, foggy day in September. Alexa took a deep breath as she cautiously trudged into her new school. The chatter of kids, who had known each other for years, echoed through the wide hallways. Endless rows of striking red lockers occupied every possible space Hordes of students crowded the halls like an army of ants. She could feel an abundance of eyes looking her up and down, wondering who this new freak was, wondering who was invading their tiny, close-knit school. It was horrendous enough that she was a freshman. It was even worse that she was new. She was fresh meat in a

“ Can I go tomorrow?” I ask looking at the calendar the time. It was 6:00, April 29th.
