Ankle injuries are one of the most common sports injuries. This injury can be caused by many activities, such as: running, jumping, basketball, football, and volleyball. The ankle joint is a hinge joint formed between the tibia, fibula, the talus. This anatomy allows the foot to partake in the actions of dorsiflexion and plantarflexion. The joint also allows a small amount of rotation. Two bones of the foot, the talus, and calcaneus connect to form the joint which allows the foot to move from side to side. Statistics show that sprains to the deltoid ligament account for less than 20% of all ankle sprains. The other 80% are sprains to all the other ligaments. The most common ligament injury is the anterior talofibular. An injury to this ligament
Non-contact ACL tears are more common in sports that require jumping and pivoting. (Washington, 2009, pg. 1)
However, the client did not continue with the treatment and the pain had persisted ever since. The pain and discomfort in the right ankle had continued and subsequently affecting his performance and daily activities. Ankle sprains are the most common injury in sport (Garrick, 1977). Athletes in sports involving running, cutting, jumping and contact with other players are susceptible to ankle sprains (Barrett and Bilisko, 1995). These movements can be largely seen in football.
Syndesmosis ligaments of the ankle refers to the membrane connecting the tibia to the fibula. The 3 ligaments are the anterior tibiofibular ligament, the posterior tibiofibular ligament, and the interosseous tibiofibular ligament. The most commonly injured ligament in syndesmotic sprains is the AITF ligament. The movement that is allowed with these ligaments is limited due to their anatomy that allows little range in eversion. These ligaments play little role in the stability of the ankle
The knee is a complex joint. There are many different injuries that can occur during sports. The most predominant type of injuries to the knee is those done to the Meniscus and the ligaments. There are two areas of ligaments that are commonly affected; the cruciate ligaments and the Collateral ligaments. Within the Cruciate ligaments there are posterior and anterior injuries, and within the Collateral ligaments there are medial and lateral injuries. It is very important that these injuries be taken seriously in athletics due to the seriousness of their affects to the knee.
Many people believe that concussions are just a head injury that causes headaches, but it’s more than that, so much more than that! In my recent research over Concussions, more importantly, concussions due to sports related occurrences, and the side effects.
The pain and limited mobility caused by ankle arthritis can make daily life challenging; thus, negatively affecting an individual’s overall quality of life. In addition, this limited mobility and frequent pain often leads to anxiety and depression. At Nilssen Orthopedics Ankle and Foot Center, we are dedicated to improving our patients’ quality of life by addressing their symptoms using conservative treatments and, when necessary, surgical intervention.
The ankle joint is the most commonly injured part of the body for individuals who participate in competitive activities, accounting for approximately 30% of all sports related injuries (Boyas, Hajj, & Bilodeau, 2013; Hootman, Dick, & Agel, 2007; Waterman, Owens, Davey, Zacchilli, & Belmont, 2010). It was estimated that in the United States alone, there are around 25,000 ankle sprains suffered each day(Olmsted, Vela, Denegar, & Hertel, 2004). A systematic review has analyzed articles published between 1977 and 2005 in 70 sports, and demonstrated that the ankle was the
Female athletes can protect themselves through many stretches and prevention programs provided by their coaches, parents and Athletic Trainers. Many ACL tears can be protected by warm- up or cool-down programs or stretching (Ritter). The solution to preventing some of the ACL injuries is a strength and flexibility programs to strengthen the hamstrings, quadriceps and the core while stabilizing the knee (Busse). Working on the athlete’s techniques such as running, jumping and landing techniques can vastly improve their chances of ACL strength and would help prevent against tears (Malamut). Using an ACL prevention program teaches athletes how to align their hips for correct form and how to jump correctly without pain and without being knock-knee.
The whistle blows, and the crowd stands and cheers as the soccer game comes to a close. Martin limps off the field as he looks down at his swollen ankle. He can barely stand up, but he could not care less about his injury. All that matters to him is the victory. His team made history by advancing to the fourth round of the playoffs. He found a way to push through the pain and win. Martin was left with a sense of euphoria as he celebrated with his teammates.
In the NFL, 2,600 players get hurt each year. Football is the number one sport people play- and get hurt in. No one knows the real dangers of a football injury. Some football injuries could end a player's season, or their career. (NCAA)
If you play different sports or enjoy being active, you may suffer with one or more injuries, but professionals in orthopedic sports medicine can offer you preventative solutions. Unfortunately, accidents do happen, so you may become part of the 25,000 Americans who suffer with an ankle sprain each day. Using this guide, you will learn how to care for your sprained ankle to prevent further damage that can become more serious.
The ankle joint is the most commonly injured part of the lower leg. It happens from an unusual twisting action
The foot and ankle are important weight-bearing organs that have a vital role in activities of daily life (Walker, 2014). The most familiar injury is an acute sprain (Mai and Cooper 2009). It is estimated that more than 300,000 people came to the emergency department with acute ankle sprains every year (Roche et al, 2009). The ankle is a synovial hinge joint which is made up of the distal fibula forming the lateral malleolus, while the distal tibia forming the medial malleolus and the talus (Walker, 2014). The ankle sprain happened when weight is put to the foot and the foot experienced an uneven surface or got twisted and it rotated towards or away from midline of body, known as eversion or inversion. This occurrence causes ligaments on outside
“Regardless of what sport you play, athletes are at considerable risk for strains, sprains, and other soft tissue injuries.” (How to prevent common sports injuries). Sports injuries are in the air people, and there is nothing we can do to completely stop them. So we must help the athletes who sustain them. Injuries will never be stopped until we educate, warm up, and have the right equipment.
Injuries play a big role in an athlete's career and his or her overall health, although minor injuries are often nothing to worry about they can lead to something serious especially if the injury is repeatedly being aggravated. scrapes, cuts, bruises, and broken bones are all things to worry about. When a player is injured he or she is losing play time and money and why risk this when there is small but giant steps that can be taken to prevent injuries. But brain injuries are something much more serious even if the player says not to worry because something worse than losing playtime is losing your life. Albert C. hergenroeder has written an article on preventing sports injuries, he says that there are 3 million sports injuries among kids around
