The subject of animal testing in cosmetics has been a never-ending debate between those who approve, and those who disapprove. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines cosmetics as "articles intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance without affecting the body's structure or functions."; this includes eye and facial makeup, skin cream, perfume, lipsticks, nail polish, moisturizers, shampoos, deodorants, scrubs, and any item that enhance one’s appearance. In the world of cosmetics, companies live up to the potential of satisfying their consumers’ needs and wants by testing their latest products on animals. The purpose of testing products on animals is for the …show more content…
Consequently, results from animal tests may not be relevant to humans, as they can under- or overestimate real-world hazards to people. Results from animal tests can be quite variable and difficult to interpret. Unreliable and ineffective animal tests mean consumer safety cannot be guaranteed.” People may argue that animal testing is necessary because it will prove the substances used are not dangerous for humans, but most testing can have unmeaningful or even disastrous effects. Harriet Williamson from Huffington Post states that “animal experiments have only a 5-25% success rate for predicting harmful human side effects. Animals pass 92% of clinical tests that humans fail, meaning that the predictions from animal testing are inconclusive and often incorrect.” Animals and humans are constantly growing and adapting to new environments and situations. Human beings and the wild creatures do not share the exact same face and skin structure, hair texture, lips, and eye anatomy. A beauty product that may affect a rabbit’s eye does not necessarily mean it will bring harm on a human’s eye. There are other replacements to testing that many companies do not look into; nearly 50 of which are non-animal tests that have been validated for use. Non-animal alternatives can combine human cell-based tests and sophisticated computer models to deliver human-relevant results in hours or days, unlike some animal tests that can take months or years. Non-animal alternatives are also typically much more cost-effective than tests that use animals (www.humanesociety.org). Alternatives such as artificial human skin and tissues that can be used for advanced testing saving thousands of animal lives each year. With all the new resources and technological advances, there is no need for animal testing and there is no need to support
In this paper there are three main topics that are going to be covered. They are alternatives to animal testing, animal testing in cosmetics, and the news in the cosmetic industry related to animal testing. For this paper there were four sources that were evaluated. All of them had a few things in common and through that it was easy to link them together through three different subtopics that will be evaluated later in this paper. The first source that I will be using is “The Science of Dermocosmetics and Its Role in Dermatology”. This article was written by Dreno, B., E. Araviiskaia, E. Berardesca, T. Bieber, J. Hawk, M. Sanchez- Viera, and P. Wolkenstein. The second article that will be effective in this essay is “New
A new survey shows that, “72% of Americans oppose testing cosmetics products on animals” (Physicians Commitee). These people are real people, who say they won’t buy a product that is cruelly tested on animals like dogs, cats, sheep’s, or pigs. The number of animals tested are sadly increasing, “2,703 cats, 6,077 dogs, and 7,458 primates were used in testing for cosmetics in 2010” (USDA 26). These facts show exactly how many animals are used every year for torture for many cosmetic companies. These animals do not have the voice to speak for themselves, so it’s wrong to treat them like things, when they are creatures just like us. Consumers still continue to buy these products, but if only they knew that these products aren’t natural and are chemically
Animal testing can be thought of as the necessary evil of today’s medical and pharmaceutical industries. While there are other alternatives, such as stem cell research and testing, those alternatives are just as rife with controversy and are usually much more expensive. It may be true that animal results are not always directly correlative with human data, but it gives researches a solid groundwork on which to proceed. Certain animals are used for certain types of medications and procedures precisely because the systems being tested are very similar to that of a human’s. It’s hard to argue with such amazing results; human health and lifespan have tremendously improved in just the last one hundred years, and much of that progress is due to the
Animal testing is a very serious issue, considering the fact that it kills one-hundred thousand to two-hundred thousand animals each year (“About”). Many companies do not believe that animal testing is a serious problem and find that there are issues that are more important to worry about. The FDA believes that animal tests should be replaced with other tests that do not involve the use of animals because of the harm it causes them (“Animal Testing and Cosmetics”). Animals have emotions and feelings just as humans do, even though they are not always noticeable. Although animal-tested cosmetic products are very popular and used everyday by most people, animals are being hurt and killed daily to create them, therefore they should be banned
Animal testing is still done by cosmetic companies even though it is unethical and scientifically inaccurate. The various tests carried out on animals is not a guarantee for using cosmetics on our skin since animals react differently to certain chemicals as compared to humans. Cosmetics companies kill millions of animals every year in pursuit of profit. The animals that suffer and die in these laboratories range from rabbits to mice. According to companies that perform such tests, they are done to establish the safety of products and ingredients. However, no law requires that cosmetics products be tested on animals. The Food and Drug
Many of America’s favorite go-to skin care products and cosmetics are tested on animals. Despite that, there are products on the market that use alternative testing procedures yet are still considered safe and effective. In the article titled Animal Testing on Cosmetics written by author Ian Murnaghan, the controversy of animal testing in cosmetics is referred to when he says, “The practice is particularly controversial because animals may experience discomfort, suffering and ultimately die, all in the name of aesthetics and 'looking good.’”. Much of what he says in this quote can be applied to extremely popular cosmetic brands like Sephora , Almay, and Revlon who all use animal testing to build their products to maximum use. Brands that compare to these are ELF, Too Faced, and Physicians Formula who all claim to using alternative procedures to show the importance of being
It is human nature that drives us to focus on the improvement of ourselves and the community we live in. Humanity as a whole is constantly on the search for new and innovative ways to improve our lives and to make the world a better, safer place for all. Becoming educated on current topics is a key tool to understanding the way the world works around us. Not only that, but an education also allows for the development of morals, a sense of right and wrong, to take form. Without morals, it would be impossible for society to form let alone function. A current topic in which we are at battle with today is the case of testing cosmetic products on animals. Although many cosmetic companies believe that animal testing cosmetics is morally sound, I
Each year, thousands of animals are brutally tortured in laboratories, in the name of cosmetic research. A movement to ban animal testing for cosmetic purposes has been gaining popularity, with many companies hopping on the bandwagon against this research. New alternatives have been developed to eliminate the necessity to test on animals. This is only a small beginning of what is necessary to end these immoral acts. Animal testing in cosmetics is useless and cruel, and can be accomplished by other methods of research to end the suffering of animals.
Dalai Lama once said, ”Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to a man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not to die, so do other creatures.” Every year, animals experience pain and die in perilous tests to obtain higher quality and resolve the safety of cosmetics. Animal testing for cosmetics should be restricted because it is very dangerous to animals, it is traumatizing, and unnecessary.
One of the leading industries in the United States is the cosmetics business. When cosmetics started up people were applying all different types of product to their bodies. While using the products, people were starting to acquire serious injuries to their skin and hair. This forced make-up producers to figure out a way to test the products before it hit the market. In the 1940s, scientists started to use animals for testing purposes. In recent years, testing on animals has decreased because producers use safer ingredients in their products. Even though there are safe ingredients, people continue to experiment with new chemicals and dyes. To avoid major lawsuits, companies still experiment on animals to prove the product is safe. With all these new products, the Food and Drug
Throughout history, animal testing has played a huge and important role in cosmetic as well as medical advancement around the world, which for the most part is fairly significant. This advancement coming on the backs of millions upon millions of animals, a necessary evil? This question is hugely speculated throughout the scientific community. Animal testing has been around for a pretty long time, whether it is medically, or it is cosmetically, in recent years, though the question has been raised about whether there is still a need for animal testing in cosmetics a question that has been proposed and fiercely debated by scientists of your caliber as well as everyday individuals who see this as a huge problem. With the amazing advancements being
Millions of animals every year are being used in labs to test cosmetics. This problem has become a worldwide issue and the U.S. needs to make a change by prohibiting the use of animals in testing cosmetics for safe use.
The cosmetic industry is a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide, catering to both men and women. Cosmetics seem to be so pervasive that everywhere you look, you can find some sort of cosmetic advertisement or commercial. Considering this high demand for cosmetics, many companies strive to produce products that will satisfy the consumer. However, in order for some cosmetic companies to manufacture their products, testing is conducted in the expense of animals. In the following report, we will examine many of the adversities that are associated with animal testing while offering some recommendations on how to remedy this issue.
Did you know that more than 100 million animals die every year in U.S. labs? Many people believe it's wrong because it kills animals, but big companies still love it. Testing on animals can be traced back all the way to the 17th century in the UK during Harvey’s experiments to demonstrate blood. I believe that animal testing should be banned in the field of cosmetics, because there are already over 1000 ingredients already proven safe.
Millions of animals are being unneedlessly tested on for cosmetics, even though there are plenty of alternatives available and most of the results are unreliable or not applicable to humans. Although the fight against animal testing has made huge progress recently, America has yet to stop this cruel practice and chooses to torture animals while other countries are making a stop to the testing (“Animal Testing 101”).
