Animal Testing Argumentative Essay

Decent Essays

Animal testing is defined as the use of non-human animals in research or development projects for purposes of determining the safety of substances, such as food or drugs. Currently scientists are testing on mice to find a cure for cancer. That benefits humans, but what about the mice? Instead of testing animals, scientists should use one of the many alternative methods to test their products. Scientists should not test on any kind of animal. A question could be made as to why scientists test on animals in the first place. Although chimpanzees have DNA more related to humans, scientists mainly use mice to experiment on. Rodents are small, easily housed and maintained, and adapt well to new surroundings. Mice reproduce very quickly and have a lifespan of two to three years, so a rodent could have several generations of mice in a short period of time (Melina). Even though mice are what is mostly used, they are not the only ones. There is a wide variety of animals being used to test drugs. In fact, an estimated 17 to …show more content…

It uses computer simulation modeling organic processes. Studies have shown that it can predict whether a drug will negatively affect humans or not without using animals. Quantitative structure-activity relationships, or QSARs, are computer-based techniques that make estimates of a substances that could be hazardous. Recently, an abundance of these QSAR tools, and PETA actively promotes and funds their use internationally (PETA). These techniques can be very useful now and in the future. Scientists can save many animals and help the community as well. When a new drug or surgical technique is developed, society deems it unethical to use that drug or technique first in human beings because of the possibility that it would cause harm rather than good. Instead, the drug or technique is tested on animals to make sure that it is safe and effective (National Academy
