We have seen many examples of animal intelligence, and I think Animals are smart in their own ways. We have been focused on chimps, birds, and killer whales, and it is impressive how intelligent they are. In one of the listening we have seen how a chimp understood that another chimp was disabled and helped that chimp. We also learn that competition for food is what motivates them. For example: A chimp with a human who has food, and the chimp want to get the food. The chimp figured it out that if he sneaks around a barrier that the human can’t see, it could get the food. So this demonstrates that chimps understand how to manipulate the situation to get what it wants. Birds also demonstrate that food is their principal motivation. We learn from
The article Animals Mind by Virginia Morell claim the idea that animals are smart. Virginia talk about Irene a recently graduated from Harvard University who experimented with a gray parrot named Alex. Irene teach Alex to reproduce sound of the English language. Alex learned to talk and count to six and also he can difference flavors and colors. Virginia said that animals are capable to think, and they can learn things from humans. The author point dogs understand human’s forms of communication. She also suggests that animals has a higher mental abilities: good memories and also creatively. Virginia support the main idea that animals are smart. If animals can learn and memorize and understand signs is because they can think. So animals have
In literature, characters encounter and react to obstacles created by environmental changes. To successfully navigate these changes, characters must gain awareness of their environments and gain the power to effectively take action. Thus, Janie most successfully adjusts to different environments because she develops self-awareness, attains power, and initiates action; she takes action more efficiently than Young Ju, and she is more self-aware of her circumstances than the Hunger Artist.
Rifkin gives an example of two birds, Betty and Abel, who use their intelligence to make hooks for retrieving food wedged into tubes. Rifkin states, “…study into animal emotions and cognitive abilities...” This experiment shows how animals, and in this case, Betty and Abel, can use their brains to come up with solutions to complex problems, just the same
After reading Jeremy Rifkin’s article, “A Change of Heart about Animals”, I discovered more about animals than I had ever known before. As a former pet owner I know how much owners care for their pets and consider them to be a part of the family, almost like a child to them, so they are treated with kindness and are loved to the fullest. What I did not know was how intelligent animals actually are. Rifkin does a great job at expressing this by demonstrating to the audience facts that they had possibly not known or heard of before. For example, he describes how crows can make tools out of a wire, gorillas can learn sign language and have an average score on an Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test, and how pigs can often feel lonely and go into depression.
In the documentary "Ape Genius", researchers conducted a series of experiments to determine the social and intellectual capabilities of chimps and bonobos. Describe two of these experiments (the procedure, the subject and observations) and the conclusions that were drawn from them. In your opinion, are these experiments, proof of the inferior or superior intelligence of apes compared to humans? Explain.
Have you ever wondered how intelligent elephants are? I bet you guessed not very intelligent however, you would be wrong. Elephants are actually very intelligent. This is explained in the video Elephants Show Cooperation, the article “Elephants Can Lend a Helping Trunk”, and a passage from the study “Elephants Know When They Need a Helping Trunk in a Cooperative Task”. These sources all explain an experiment involving Asian Elephants and teamwork activities. Although the video, article, and passage from the study all explain the same topic and experiment, the delivery of information is all very different which influence the reader’s understanding of the
For example, researchers came across a 300-pound gorilla who learned at least 1,000 sign language signs and knows several english words. Animals having the ability to do what is command to them all the way toknowing sign language and decision making should tell us that these animals are developing to do more. Also quoting Rifkin, “tool making and the development of sophisticated language skills are just two of many attributes we thought exclusive to our species” This quote speaks a lot because it tells us that we never imagined to see them mentally advance but instead view them as empty-headed creatures. They have more abilities than we could ever know. For instance, two New Caledonian crows , Abel and Betty, were given two tool choices, straight wire and a hooked wire, to get a piece of meat out of a tube.
Animals are able to learn. Kanzi is a 26-year-old male Bonobo.According to the article, Speaking Bonobo it says “Matata was getting taught to communicate with a keyboard… Matata never the hang of it, but Kanzi who played in the background… he got the hang of it” This shows they have a way to learn because Kanzi wasn’t even taught to communicate with a keyboard but, he still picked up the talent. This shows how they're able to learn they're able to learn. According to the article Speaking Bonobo, it says “Savage-Rumbaugh and her colleagues kept
Have you ever heard a parrot repeat what a human has said. Is this a sign of intelligence or is it mimic. I believe that animals are intelligent. Animals use their intelligence to find food, a mate, and a home.
At the Gorilla Foundation in North Carolina, “Koko the 300-pound gorilla… was taught sign language and has mastered more than 1,000 signs and understands several thousand English words.” (Rifkin 8) This shows learning ability towards animals because Koko is able to learn sign language and speak English like a human does. She is smart, she can take this and communicate with us and learn more about how to speak English, maybe even more. “Now we know that geese have to teach goslings their migration routes.
Many species of wildlife continue to be mistreated and neglected even when they show many signs of being intelligent creatures. In the article, “A Change in Heart About Animals” author, Jeremy Rifkin discusses many instances where animals prove smarter than people give them credit for. One of many discoveries evaluated by Rifkin where crows, that were able to manipulate a wire in order to retrieve food. The crow was able to adapt to the situation using its critical thinking skills, similar to humans. Since these crows showed immense skill and have characteristics similar to people they should, like people, be protected and not experimented on. Another humanlike quality shown in an animal, explained by Rifkin, is the ability to communicate with human beings. Koko the gorilla was taught
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of Religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech," this Amendment is the most important part of the constitution. Without free speech, we the people of the United States would not be able to speak openly and freely about issues that affect our everyday life.
The origin of modern day whales, a mystery that has puzzled paleontologists for years, may have just been solved with the discovery of an ankle bone. This discovery might sound simple and unimportant, but the bones of these ancient animals hold many unanswered questions and provide solid proof of origin and behavior. The relationship between whales and other animals has proven to be difficult because whales are warm-blooded, like humans, yet they live in the sea. The fact that they are warm-blooded suggests that they are related to some type of land animal. However, the questions of exactly which animal, and how whales evolved from land to water, have remained unanswered until now.
I personally do believe animals have minds. An animal would acquire knowledge of their environment and then interpret that information and know how to act. The theory that mainly supports my argument is the behaviorism theory. The behaviorism theory argues that an animal has a mind by the way they behave.
Animal Intelligence Intelligence is defined as the ability to acquire and apply knowledge. Psychologists have exploited this concept in many ways to try and determine whether non-human animals are capable of intelligence. From social learning it is logical to assume that, since non-human animals are able to both acquire and use new behaviours, they must be intelligent in some way. Heyes stated that there are 6 types of behaviour which suggest intelligence. These are imitation, self-recognition, social relationship formation, role-taking, deception and perspective taking.
