In the Novel “Animal Farm” by George Orwell, Old Major and the animals had their dream of a utopian society come true by forcing Mr. Jones off the farm. Throughout the story the animals except for the Pigs begin to work like slaves to prepare for the winter. The pigs began to change all of the laws they broke. Also, the pigs had to convince the animals that the apples and milk were brain food and that they could not have any. Next, the pigs put the animals to work where Boxer hurts his leg and then his lungs collapse. Finally, the pigs power becomes too overwhelming for them and the conditions on the farm become worse than when Mr. Jones ran the farm. The pigs only provided ideas on creating things for the farm and made the other animals work like slaves to complete these ideas. First, the animals would work longer in harder in fear of having very little food during the winter. In the text it states "They were always cold, and usually hungry as well” (Orwell 62). The pigs would tell the animals that if they did not work as hard as they could their food ration would be decreased by half. A quote in Animal a Farm explains “This work was strictly voluntary, but any who absented himself from it would have his rations reduced by half.” (Orwell). Later on in the book the animals also began working in fear of the dogs attacking them for not working hard enough. Furthermore in the Novel Animal Farm Napoleon exclaims “Throughout the spring and summer they worked sixty-hour week, and In August Napoleon announced that there would be work on Sunday afternoons as well. Not only did the animals work a sixty - hour week they now had to work on their easier day of work. Finally, the pigs used their power to make the animals to do all of the hard labor while they stayed inside and got
