Animal Farm Influence

Decent Essays

How Power Influences People Around It While power is required for everyone to receive equal rights for themselves, some misuse the power given and give bad influence to others below them. The less power someone have, the more things in his/her life are determined by how other people want them to be. Power has the ability to alter the course of events, or to change the mindset of people around them. Not only that, but people with a higher state of power have the ability to enslave people below them. Finally, people with power have the ability to establish a government to rule the people around them. In this essay, the story from George Orwell’s Animal Farm and Steve Ross’ visual novel Marked will be further analysed to research how the authors …show more content…

From Animal Farm, the story acts as an epitome of the development of positions of power. This is evident in the story where the pigs have the resources all for themselves, and they are able to persuade the lower class animals that they actually need those. “…..We pigs are brainworkers. The whole management and organisation of this farm depend on us. Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for your sake that we drink the milk and eat those apples.” The pigs used their intelligence to manipulate and convince the “lower class” animals to follow them, even by getting overworked to death. Power is supposed to grant people the ability to manage others well. However, the pigs used their power for selfish purposes, and they continued to oppress the “lower class” animals, threatening them to work entirely for the pigs’ greedy wants even until they die of exhaustion. This is also evident in Marked where Jesus is an epitome of a powerful character that is able to change the mindset of people. This can be seen in a lot of instances. One instance of this is from page 22 how Jesus persuades Simon to follow Him, in exchange for Simon’s real name. Another example of this would be in page 38, 55, 69 and 88 how Jesus do various miracles such as casting out demons as His form of power to enable people to follow Him. In this evidence, it can be seen that power has the ability to change the …show more content…

In “Marked”, the current government was given the authority to do as they please to the people below them. This is evident in page 2 where a man got executed due to failure to identify himself legally. However, Jesus doesn’t show His supremacy over others, as it can be seen that He’d rather surrender Himself to be crucified rather than escaping and perhaps, taking the lives of the people that wants Him killed. This can be seen in page 144 of the book, as Jesus doesn’t say anything in His defense after He was captured, exposing his human-like characteristics. It is evident enough that Jesus has more power than anyone in the story, yet He doesn’t show them. In ‘Animal Farm’ though, the pigs claimed that they are in the highest position of power in the farm since Mr. Jones ran away. Due to this, the animals felt like they were enslaved as they were forced to work over exhaustion, getting only a small part of rations in return. The Russian communism reference in the story is very evident as the pigs ruled the farm with an iron fist, or in this case, a
