The Nature Of Conformity The term conformity defines as the compliance with standards, rules, or laws. The world needs and requires conformists and nonconformists in order to balance out the similarities and differences of society. A conformist for this would be Boxer, a hard working, naive and ignorant horse who always follow the rules and continues to serve animal farm and the leader just like any other animal. A nonconformists for this would be Leonard Mead, a man who goes for long strolls every evening by himself and is the only walker in society in which results him in being different. These choices of following the current rules or not decides whether the person receives something in a negative or a positive way, that is the nature of conformity that George Orwell meant. In the excerpt “Animal Farm,” Boxer conform by following the rules that both Old Major and Napoleon made during their ruling, which are the seven commandments for every animal to follow, to show their equality towards one another, and their respect towards Animal Farm. Boxer with his dedication and loyalty to whoever ruled and strength. It played a key role in the early prosperity of animal farm and the later completion of the windmill. Everyone is staying in their houses and watching television, but Leonard Mead is the only person that likes to takes walks at night and enjoys going outside. Mead knew that he was the only one that takes walks but he continues to do it and that makes him a nonconformist. There are good and bad parts in being a nonconformist however for Leonard Mead, he didn’t realize that society has changed and has become more modern but not him which he differentiates from the others by following the rules from the past and rebelling
George Orwell, in Animal Farm, addresses blind conformity and misuse of power. There are many comparisons between Animal Farm and Germany under Hitler’s tyranny concerning these two themes. Napoleon and Hitler both used propaganda to ensure there was blind conformity amongst the common people/animals and they both misused their power. The two themes of blind conformity and misuse of power are constantly repeated throughout the novel and will be studied throughout this essay.
