In my 3-D representation I chose to recreate the scene in the book when the first windmill was destroyed. In this scene, the windmill was knocked over by a bad storm. Napoleon knew what had happened to the windmill, but he decided to use this as an opportunity to order Snowball’s death. After the windmill was knocked down, Napoleon told all of the animals that it was Snowball who did this. Napoleon ordered the animals to search for him and then kill him. This scene was very important in furthering the plot in the novel because it was the final step that Napoleon took to gain all of the power. Napoleon had already ran Snowball off of the farm, but ordering the animals to kill him ensured that the power would not be taken from Napoleon. During
He claims that in demand to support and defend Animal Farm and toughen the certainty of Old Major’s dream of a life without humans, mixt up rebellions in other farms throughout England. Napoleon always disagrees with Snowball’s ideas because he doesn’t want him to lead Animal Farm.
After the dirty deed of murder was done Napoleon accused Snowball of being a traitor working with Mr. Jones trying to have him Mr. Jones reacquire the farm. The great ideas of Snowball were taken by Napoleon and claimed to have made his own like the Snowballs design of the windmill. The work on the farm increased and since it is a democracy where everyone agrees to make decisions, Napoleon tells the people he will do what is best for them. It starts to create a divide among the working animals and the pigs who were the brains of the operation.
This caused the quality of living to go down as time went on. On page 52, Napoleon, “Uttered a high pitched whimper of a kind no one had heard him utter before.” This was his call to the dogs which chased Snowball out of the farm. With no one to oppose him Napoleon is able to control the animals and the farm. On page 57, it says that, “ Napoleon read out the orders for the week in a gruff soldierly style...”
It is evident here that Snowball believes that he has power over the other animals already. Further on during the second chapter Snowball and Napoleon send for a ladder, proving that they think they can use the animals to do jobs and progresses more in chapter 3 when they believe that they can
Napoleon is an opportunitist. When he realizes that he can turn a situation, whether good or bad, to his advantage, he does so. For example, when the windmill topples, he tells that that Snowball is the cause and turns the animals against him. From then on he makes Snowball a scapegoat. Whenever something goes wrong, it is because of Snowball. This makes the animals feel that they are lucky to have Napoleon instead. It is also an easy way out as it keeps the animals from finding out where the blame really lies. This secures Napoleon's leadership position as the he will not be blamed for anything wrong and creates the illusion that Napoleon's ruling is perfect, making him indispensable. In the case of the timber, he uses Snowball to back up his decision. Since the animals are against him, the party he is not selling to will have Snowball residing there. This causes the animals to support his decision.
Shortly after the Revolution, Snowball comes up with the plan to construct a windmill to make the lives of the inhabitants of Animal Farm easier. Napoleon hides in the shadows per se until the puppies that he has taken and trained are old enough to act as a police force. Once they are old enough, Napoleon has the dogs drive Snowball off the farm. He then takes credit for the idea of the windmill and proceeds to claim that he, not Snowball, won the award at the Battle of Cowshed. Napoleon then informs the animals that Snowball was an enemy and was a threat to Animal Farm. The animals are swayed by his propaganda and are fearful of his police dogs; this is what keeps him in power.
Snowball came up with the idea of the windmill before Napoleon "claimed" it as his own. "Within a few weeks, Snowball's plans for the windmill were fully worked out." (Orwell, pg.49) At the Battle of the Cowshed Snowball directed the animals where to go, and when to attack, while Napoleon was hiding in the farmhouse." Snowball now gave the signal for the charge."(Orwell 41) Snowball was an intelligent pig; he always had a strong voice during his speeches, which won debates against Napoleon, he also won the animals support. "At the Meetings Snowball often won over the majority by his brilliant speeches..."(Orwell, pg.47) Snowball always had the animals support for anything, Snowball was smart, he was able to come up with creative ideas for the future of Animal
He ordered the guard dogs to attack Snowball, and they “dashed straight for Snowball…one of them all but closed his jaws on Snowball’s tail, but Snowball whisked it free just in time. [He then] slipped through a hole in the hedge and was seen no more…” The dogs then returned to Napoleon and it was noticeable “that they wagged their tails to him in the same way as the other dogs had been used to do to Mr. Jones” (Orwell, 33-34). Napoleon had his eye on the power that being leader can bring, and he overthrew Snowball in a corrupt, greedy manner.
Napoleon was so eager to keep his power that he used scapegoats for anything that went wrong on the farm. When the windmill that all the animals had been building collapsed, Napoleon did not want faith in him to be lost and replaced with rebellious thoughts. Napoleon relieved himself of any blame for the bad construction plans of the windmill by naming Snowball, who unbeknownst to the other animals had been killed, as the person responsible for its collapse. He told them that Snowball was a traitor and that anyone found to be in league with him would be punished.
Obviously, it was a great idea convincing the other animals about the windmill. However, Napoleon is here convincing the animals of Snowball causing farm troubles. For example, he told the animals that Snowball is a traitor because he was working for Foxwood Farm and he also said he proof of the secret documentation of Snowball working for Foxwood. However, Snowball is the animalism because he wanted the animals to be treated equally and have their freedom just like Old major had a dream about. On the other hand, Napoleon didn’t care for the animals he just wanted power so he had seven secret police dogs to scare away Snowball from the farm and also to kill any animal that didn’t obey his
Snowball symbolizes Leon Trotsky during the Russian Revolution, and Napoleon running Snowball off the farm symbolizes when Joseph Stalin banned Leon Trotsky from the Soviet Union. From there, Napoleon runs the farm the way he wants it, manipulating the seven commandments bit by bit. Napoleon executes the other animals and makes them confess to various crimes, just like Stalin. Historian say “…he ruled by terror, and millions of his own citizens died during his brutal reign.” While Napoleon is living the life, drinking, living in the human house, slaughtering animals, and sleeping in beds, he sends out Squealer who spreads propaganda to the animals about how hard Napoleon is working.
Stated in the text is, “‘Do you know the enemy who has come in the night and overthrown our windmill? SNOWBALL!’” (Orwell 28) Another quote that is found in the text is, “‘No more delay…There is work to be done…We will teach this miserable traitor that he cannot undo our work so easily.’” (Orwell 28) This instance of that character role motivating and uniting the animals is when after working very hard, the animals had built about half of the first attempted windmill. On a particularly turbulent night, during a bout of raging winds, the structure was destroyed. Immediately upon the discovery of the ruins, Napoleon says those quotes to the animals in an attempt to rally them back to work and unite them against an outside force. His actions prove to be successful. Blaming Snowball for the destruction of the animals’ masterpiece created a feeling of vengeance inside them and inspired them to come together and persevere through rebuilding the windmill to spite their evil pig
Squealer uses this to make Napoleon out as the hero for running Snowball off the farm, and to prevent the animals from doubting Napoleon’s leadership. This encourages the animals to work harder for Napoleon to rebuild the windmill and helps prevent a
With Snowball out of the way, Napoleon’s path to absolute power without accountability is clear. Napoleon enlists Squealer to deceive and trick the animals into anything Napoleon wants them to believe by manipulating the facts and confusing the animals. Some examples of this in the story are Napoleon taking credit for the windmill, Napoleon claiming that Snowball sabotaged the windmill, and ultimately claiming that Snowball was in collaboration with Mr. Jones all along. Napoleon’s skillful use of Squealer proves effective in making Snowball the scapegoat for everything that’s wrong with the farm, and now Napoleon takes his evil intentions to another level by murdering any animal that was thought to be in allegiance with Snowball. One of the most wicked deeds was the sale of Boxer to the knacker for money to buy more whiskey. This evil act was only made worse by the elaborate lie Squealer created to cover Napoleon’s tracks. By the end of the book, Napoleon is seen having a dinner party with other humans, while the other animals are in about the same state they were at the beginning of the book. The pigs have risen to take the place of the humans and run the farm, and all the other animals are no better off for it.
Napoleon ends up kicking Snowball out of the farm since he wanted to be the only one in charge and makes the animals believe that Snowball did not care about them and wanted the worst for them all. The animals believe this because they did not know what was good from bad. As stated, “Sixth Commandment decreed "No animal shall kill any other animal." And though no one cared to mention it in the hearing of the pigs or the dogs, it was felt that the killings which had taken place did not square with this…….Muriel read the Commandment for her. It ran: "No animal shall kill any other animal without cause.
