Animal cruelty is categorised into either intentional acts of violence or, neglect based cases where an owner is unable to provide for an animal and broadly as unnecessary or unreasonable harm. These are general statements of what can be considered animal abuse as most animal welfare acts and legislation do not have a specific definition themselves. Generally they have examples of what is considered animal cruelty which all fall under the two categories above.
Some of these example include: physically beating an animal, killing inhumanly, transport or housing not suitable or not meeting the animal’s needs or neglect in the form of; nutrients, living conditions or space, treatment of injury or disease and attention.
Animal cruelty is also not just limited to physical abuse or harm, animals can quiet easily suffer psychological harm from neglect, being in a constant state of stress/fear or scaring from physical attacks.
Factory farming
Factory farming is the industrial process in which animals and the products they produce are mass produced. Roughly around two-thirds of farm animals are raised in factory farms worldwide, and in Australia, this figure is close to 500 million. (2)
Although animal cruelty is illegal throughout Australia, (3) in cases such as factory farming, codes of practice do not cover these animals, resulting in legal cruelty.
The main objective of factory farms is to mass produce animal products with little cost through using intensive farming methods
Animal cruelty is any mistreatment to an animal of any size or kind including wild animals. The most common acts of animal cruelty recorded by the RSPCA are as follows;
There are some people who intentionally harm animals because of their low self-esteem. “These are people who intentionally hurt animals because they enjoy hurting things, or because it makes them feel powerful. Many of these people would hurt other people if they could get away with it. They just choose to hurt animals because animals are more helpless than people,” found by the American Prosecution Research Institute, in the article of "Real Issues".
According to PAWS, animal cruelty is when someone injures an animal, which can be your own pet, or an animal that you come across. Animal cruelty can also be when you don’t commit to full responsibility. For example, when you don’t provide food or water for your pet, this is animal cruelty. In Statistic Brain, neglect is one of the most common ways of animal abuse, with 32%.
Animal abuse is something that has been around since ancient times. Even Aristotle, in his own way, abused animals. He believed that animals were merely possessions. Aristotle even wrote in his Great Chain of Being how he believed the species on earth were arranged in a hierarchy, with humans being at the top and animals at the bottom, and that those at the bottom were only meant to serve those above them (“Animal Rights”). However, because they believed in the transmigration of the soul between humans and animals, the Pythagoreans and Neo Platonists thought that people should respect animals and their interests. So while many people may not have treated animals
The different types of animal abuse varies but the main one that everyone knows of is dog fights. People think that dog fights are fun, exciting, or just a thrill, but when you start fighting the dogs and making them aggressive, that prevents them from finding a loving caring home. When a dog fight gets busted and they get all the dogs out of there it would be hard to find them a home because of their aggression. This is sad because this more than likely means that they will have to put the dog down. I honestly do not agree with putting the dog down. Sometimes they do not want to put in the effort to make the dog better so they just take the easy way out and just put the dog down.
More than 99% of farm animals nationwide are raised in factory farms. Factory farms are large, industrial operations that raise large numbers of animals for food. These farms focus on profit and efficiency, rather than animal welfare (ASPCA). Factory farming has led to a complete disregard for animal health and rights and it needs to be controlled and better monitored.
Animal abuse is defined as either the physical mistreatment of an animal or neglect where the animal is denied basic necessities of care. The mistreatment of animals is a serious issue within society. It often goes unreported because many people believe it is only abuse if it is intentional. This lack of understanding allows minor cases of neglect to progress into major cases that can end in the death of the animals involved. Animal abuse needs a better definition due to the results of neglect, psychological issues, and ethical components.
Currently in Australia, over half a billion animals are raised, chemically modified and slaughtered for food and food production, simply for human benefit. This seems a small portion compared to the Animal Equality Network’s statistic of fifty-six billion animals slaughtered each year globally, which include for the purposes of human consumption, entertainment, religious traditions and scientific research. The main supply of animal products produced for human purposes come from factory farming. Factory farming can be defined as a system of rearing livestock using highly intensive methods, by which poultry, pigs, or cattle are confined indoors under strictly controlled conditions. Currently in Australia, factory farming is the leading cause
All around the world, people are abusing animals. Animal cruelty is a big deal because some people do not look at animals as being important; some people do not see a problem with hurting them. Animal cruelty can be define as being a malicious treatment that can cause undue pain or being mistreated. Seeing an animal get brutalize by some humans seems to be cruel. Getting kicked in the ribs, left for starvation and even used for entertainment seems to be heartless. Why abuse animals when they have not done anything to harm a human. If one must see what they are really doing to these animals, then animal cruelty would not be a big deal.
Imagine that you are sitting on your favorite spot on the couch, like always, minding your own business. Then, the person that you love the most comes into the room. You are super excited and you smile as they walk towards you. All of a sudden, you watch as they lift up their hands and begin to hit you and beat you for no reason. You let out a yelp and run up the stairs, wondering what you did to deserve this cruel punishment. It sounds hard to believe, but unfortunately for many animals in the United StatesS, this is a reality that they face every day. Animal cruelty can come in many forms. It can range from failing to keep up with basic needs to deliberate hitting or beating. It is critical for animal cruelty to become illegal in order to rescue our beloved animals. Animals that are abused develop unusual behavioral actions, it can give the animal life threatening injuries and serious
More than 99% of all farm animals are raised on a factory farm. A factory farm is a type of farm that focuses on efficiency, and money, rather than the welfare of the actual consumers of the product. These farms are harmful to our health, as well as the animals, because they provide us food that can harm our bodies. These businesses also cause much damage to the earth around them. They are also a huge threat to family farms, which are very vital to our local economies.
Each year, the most extreme cases of animal abuse receive media attention. Yet, the animal cruelty problem is more widespread than is reported in the media. Animal abuse and neglect is a nationwide issue, affecting thousands of animals nationwide. Cruelty to animals is defined as the infliction of physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, beyond what is necessary. There is a need to stop abusers from acting in such a horrific manner–preventing the neglect and suffering of the animals. What causes animal abusers to act in such a cruel way towards animals? How are cases of animal abuse being managed, and how should cases be handled? Finally, does the status of animals in society contribute to the rate of their abuse?
Unfortunately today there are many cases of animal abuse happening around the world. Animal cruelty or animal abuse can be defined as the infliction of suffering or harm upon animals for purposes other than self-defense. There are many different types of abuse such as using animals for research, using animals for entertainment purposes, abandoning animals to shelters, and animal neglect. We need to raise awareness and find a solution to these issues. Animals are suffering and we need to help them.
Between mislabeling, absent labeling, and bending the truth, the farming industry has become a business. Quality no longer matters. Turn over rate and production seem to be the only goal of so called “farmers”. Factory farming is defined as a system of rearing livestock using intensive methods, by which poultry, pigs, and/or cattle are confined indoors under strictly controlled conditions. Factory farms are very common. These intensively crude facilities abuse and kill innocent animals every day. Factory farming should be banned because of the fact factory farms pose serious health risk to consumers, detrimental effects on the environment, and deadly harm to innocent animals.
Every year, the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) takes in close to 50,000 reports of animal mistreatment in Australia and about 150,000 in England and in Wales (RSPCA, 2013). However, these figures do not include the cases when mistreatment is not reported which, according to the RSPCA, happens almost as often as the ones recorded (RSPCA, 2013). Maltreatment occurs when an animal is tormented or harmed, imprisoned or transported from one place to another in a manner that risks their well-being and health. Killing them in a non-humane way, not providing them with the correct food, not taking care of them or the illness and injuries they may have, and not providing them with proper shelter or
