In today’s world, murderers aren’t a surprising thing, as long as they are fictional. Plenty of TV shows and movies have plot lines around murder, but what about real life? As Scott Bonn states in his writing, of the approximate 15,000 murders in the United States, only 1 percent are serial killings, amounting to about 150 victims per year, with between 25 and 50 serial killers active at any given time. There are plenty of statistics on serial killers. 1 in 20 had the same three characteristics as a child: bedwetting, fire setting, and torturing animals. Dexter searches constantly for a real reason to explain why he is the way he is. He wants a better understanding of himself to make himself fit in. Morals have been developed to single out the abnormal and throughout his whole life Dexter was singled out. The consumers of the show can identify a killer as a monster, making the person less than human in our minds. Therefore if Dexter thought the same as us; killing a killer is the same as squishing a bug because both are lesser than humans and their lives do not make an impact on ours. Dexter realizes in season eight that he is an even worse monster that he believed himself to be.

Theodore Robert Bundy was an infamous serial killer who confessed to brutally murdering over 30 women. He was born on November 24th, 1946 in Burlington, Vermont. Ted’s mother, Eleanor Louise Cowell gave birth to him in the Elizabeth Lund Home For Unwed Mothers. The identity of Ted’s father is still unknown, but his birth certificate names a Lloyd Marshall. Eleanor also claimed that a veteran by the name of Jack Worthington could also be his father. Ted’s mother brought him to her parents, his grandparents, where they helped raise him. They lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for about 4 years. He then took his grandparents’ last name, Cowell, and was convinced while growing up that his mother was his sister and that his grandparents

Gary Ridgway grew up like any other ordinary suburban kid. He had a problem of wetting the bed which his mother would make fun of him and embarrass him in front of family and friends. As a young teen, he was always getting into trouble such as stabbing a six year-old boy in the ribs when he was a young teen. In high school Gary continued to go down hill and get bad grades. Gary graduated high school and joined the Navy. While he was in Vietnam, he discovered prostitutes and ended up getting sexually transmitted diseases. Soon after being home from Vietnam, Gary was killing and raping prostitutes on the streets of Seattle, Washington. Gary would go on to murder about 71 young women who he targeted because they were either prostitutes or runaways.

Jeffery Dahmer, better known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal” was a worldwide known serial killer and registered sex offender. He brutally rape, dismembered, and practiced cannibalism on his 17 victims between the years of 1978 to 1991. His victims ranged from 14 to 33 years of age. Dahmer’s killing spree started in 1978 with his first victim being Steven Hicks. Steven Hicks was a 19-year-old male that was hitchhiking when Dahmer picked him up. Dahmer brought him to his home and had drinks with him, and once Hicks was ready to leave Dahmer hit him over his head with a dumbbell and straggled him until he was dead. Later dismembering Hick’s body, taking flesh from bone, he scattered the bones around his yard and hid the flesh in a crawl space underneath the house.

In the late 1880s, London, England had the world’s eyes on the most notorious and mysterious case of Jack the Ripper. A friend of one of the victims said, “Whatever you do don't you do no wrong and turn out as I have” (Albrooks 1). His actions had brought terror and xenophobia inside the United Kingdom while outside gave renown and entertainment. Mysterious letters and curiosity brought many to stay tuned, even today many still seek the secrets of this crime. Most of today’s well-known serial killers were inspired by the mysterious and philosophical manners of Jack the Ripper.

The television series Dexter (2006) was a very popular, American-based series that aired on Showtime; the series consistently reaped in millions of viewers over the course of its airing, setting records for both the series itself and Showtime television network (O’Connell, 2013). In the first two sections, the show Dexter (2006) will be examined as it relates to Jewkes’ (2012) paradoxical construction of children as tragic victims and evil monsters. A serial killer is a person who kills a number of people. They act in a series of 5 or more murders with a break period between each murder. Serial killers can go for months and years before they are usually caught. The victim is most likely the same for every killer- a prostitute or a hitchhiker -someone who, if they were to go missing would probably not be noticed (cite). Their victims may also have the same or similar attributes in gender, age, race or general look. Serial killers also stick by their modus operandi closely but may change it with when needed.
