Analyzing Whip Whitaker's Film Flight

The Crash Reel is a documentary that was created in 2013 and directed by Lucy Walker. It covers the life of Kevin Pearce, a legendary snowboarder. The documentary focuses on the life changing accident that occurred to Kevin in Park City, Utah while training for the Olympics trials. The feature shows Kevin’s life and his recovery process after the horrifying incident. In the film, we see Kevin battle for his life with the support from his family and friends.

While watching the movie "Paper Planes" it is rather obvious the director of the movie, Robert Connelly, has some very strong views about certain issues. He has strong views about winning or losing, and it is clear that he thinks it is more about having fun than winning. Connelly has views on other issues as well, such as problems between fathers and sons. There are also some themes in the movie about moving on with past and focusing on the present and the future. He uses various techniques to prove his points to the viewers. One of these is to have two characters, one that has the same concerns as him, and is likeable, and the other who is the exact opposite, and is dislikeable. These make it clear to the viewer that he has strong views.

The Kite Runner is the first novel of Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini. It tells the story of Amir, a boy from Kabul, Afghanistan, whose closest friend is Hassan, a young Hazara servant. Novel turns around these two characters and Baba, Amir’s father, by telling their tragic stories, guilt and redemption that are woven throughout the novel. Even in the difficult moments, characters build up to their guilt and later on to their redemption. Their sins and faults alter the lives of innocent people. First, Amir and Baba fail to take action on the path to justice for Ali and Hassan. Moreover, Amir and Baba continue to build up their guilt due to their decisions and actions. Although Amir builds up more guilt than Baba throughout the novel, he eventually succeeds in the road to redemption unlike his father. After all, Amir and Baba have many chances to fix their atonements but Baba chooses not to and Amir does. Baba uses his wealth to cover up his sins but never atone himself while Amir decides to stand up and save Sohrab and finally finds peace. Amir and Baba’s reaction to sins essentially indicate their peace of mind and how they react to guilt and injustice.

Whip It is a movie full of teenage rebellion, hormones and adrenaline. The movie portrays Bliss Cavendar also known as “Babe Ruthless” (Ellen Page) as a teen from a small town, Bodean, Texas who is being primed to crowned in the biggest beauty pageant in her area, a position that her mother (Marcia Gay Harden) once held as a teenager. Despite her mother’s southern homemaker ideals and dreams Bliss desires to live her life on the wild side, on roller skates. This is a classic tale of a teenager finding her own despite the wishes of her parents. and despite their opinions, triumphs through determination.

The film puts the viewer in quit the twisted dilemma between what was right and wrong. Of course, saying that in the lightest form of right and wrong. With that said, “Whip is a functioning alcoholic, who is struggling with his own personal growth and moral choices, along with some religious murmurings here and there about fate”. (Bradshaw) Maybe even an “ACT OF GOD”. The film creates this sort of antihero you want to love and hate at the same time. No one would want their airline pilot to be drinking or drunk and high on cocaine while flying. His moral issue to abuse drugs and alcohol are one thing, but to do it in the line of duty is another. When the addiction gets too bad that it makes life hard, but then when you try to use it to fix the effects of the earlier abused drugs and alcohol. So, the most climactic portion of the movie, obviously when the plane is crashing and he rolls the plane, this brought out the idea that if he was not drugged and drunk he would not have had the “balls” to pull off such a maneuver. I can remember thinking though, if I was a pilot and my plane was in an unrecoverable spin, why wouldn’t I try something like that. I pilot that experienced may just do that. The fact remains however that Whip was intoxicated and his plane crashed. The film uses this dilemma carefully to tie between what is JUST and what is FAIR. The movie “Gone with the Wind” is about a rich southern girl named Scarlett O’Hara and her life hardships set during the time-period of the Civil War. In the story, Scarlett is forced to watch helplessly as her family’s wealth and lives fade as the confederacy loses the Civil War. Even though, the movie is mainly centered on the dilemmas of Scarlett’s love life, there are many historical accuracies that immerse the viewer in the southern mindset as well as the timeframe. The portrayal of class structures and the confederate attitudes before the Civil War are both accurate and engaging details that the movie successfully implements. In the film, these examples are displayed mainly through the dialogue and setting.

One major theme that is evident in The Kite Runner is that scars are reminders of life’s pain and regret, and, though you can ease the regret and the scars will fade, neither will completely go away. We all have regrets and always will, but though it will be a long hard process we can lessen them through redemption. The majority of The Kite Runner is about the narrator and protagonist, Amir. Almost all of the characters in The Kite Runner have scars, whether they are physical or emotional. Baba has scars all down his back from fighting a bear, but he also has emotional scars from not being able to admit that Hassan was also his son. Hassan is born with a cleft lip, but for his birthday Baba pays for it to be fixed, which left a small scar above his mouth. Hassan also has emotional scars from being raped. The reader is probably shown the emotional scars of Amir the most. Amir has emotional scars because he feels that he killed his mother, and also because his father emotionally neglects him. In the end of the novel, Amir receives many physical scars from getting beaten up by Assef, when rescuing Sohrab. Though scars will never go away and are a reminder of the past, not all scars are bad.

The purpose of the "Training for Big Fight" montage in the film Rocky is to showcase the progression of strength the protagonist needs in order to face the enemy he is set to face in the ring. Juxtaposing sound against image and allowing for clear action and music to ramp up together, Rocky's development as a fighter and his struggle to reach the top is distinctly shown. Further, the use of sound, outside of music, in the montage is placed strategically in order highlight the physical impacts of Rocky's punches. The music used is "Gonna Fly Now" by Bill Conti and was released and composed for the film Rocky. This makes sense, as the music in not subtle in any way with repeated lines like "Getting stronger" and "Won't be long now.

The film version of The Kite Runner omitted a scene from the book that vividly described a suicide attempt by a child. This scene was likely cut due to time constraints and the reality that a suicide attempt by a child would be very upsetting to many viewers. A scene as harsh as child suicide is not something that can be quickly processed and move on to the next scene. I believe the audience would require ample time to absorb what happened from beginning to end through the emotions of the characters; no doubt this scene would be too lengthy to include as a side-note to the main story. In addition, the scene might be so disturbing to some people they may not wish to see the film at all.

In the movie Birdman directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, which won an Academy Award for Best Picture, it is about a former superhero actor who is performing a Broadway play in hopes that it will rejuvenate his dying career. The main character Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) struggles with being relevant in the world today where so many want relevance. Thomas starts to realize that the production he is putting on is an exact representation of his life. In Birdman the camera angle and performance on stage, play a vital role in the movie and allows the audience to see Riggan Thomson’s personal life and struggles.

How do the cinematic techniques (mise-en-scène, cinematography, editing, and sound design) work together in the selected scene or sequence to develop the film’s central characters and themes?

he deserves love and can manage a stable life. Even professional success alone could not prevent Whitaker’s risky behavior highlighting that substance abuse is immune from socio-economic classes. Career and talent are simply not enough to convince Whitaker that he is not a failure, an internal belief that he holds without explicitly stating. Whitaker’s self-hatred becomes clear while visiting his family, his son yells that he hates his father; Whitaker grabs his son close, hugging him, and whispers in his ear “I Know, I know. I do too.” The complexities of Whitaker’s identity issues are apparent as his self-confidence and intelligence are seen throughout the film.

Whiplash proving highly popular with audiences utilizes cinematography to explore the central themes, the battle between being a good person and being remembered and the effects of a volatile and manipulative student-teacher relationship. Whiplash utilizes conventions and ideas from the drama genre to communicate these central themes and film

He probably started off as a drinker, but as time progressed his body gotten immune to the alcohol. After the alcohol, he couldn’t really help himself so he went to another drug that would cope that feeling. It affects everyone differently and they can only be the person to change those habits. I feel that once you start one thing you start to pick up others. When you don’t have mind control over yourself you start to get weak and seek things out the easy way. Captain Whip wasn’t in fault for the plane crashing but with him deciding to drink and use drugs it affected his whole career.
