Analyzing Interactions at a Local Restaurant Going out to eat at a restaurant can sometimes be somewhat of an “eye-opening’ experience. The food quality or the time it takes to get your food can definitely add to this, but often at times many people do not observe and analyze the interaction that takes place between the staff at the restaurant and those who dine there. The interactions that take place at a restaurant can vary from person to person, but by looking at characteristics such as age, gender, culture, ethnicity, or physical ability, a connection may be found regarding how people are treated by the staff at a restaurant. For this analysis, I decided to go out to a restaurant with my wife with a goal in mind to study the interactions …show more content…
We both immediately started laughing, and he just looked at both of us with a puzzled grin. He then told us to enjoy our meal and we both thanked him. Since we both lost the bet, we decided to raise the stakes and see which one of us he would give the bill to. Whoever the bill was handed to would have to pay for the bill, and treat the other person out to a movie, as well. When the waiter returned, after we had finished our meals, we were shocked again when we noticed that he set the bill at the end of the table directly in between us. At the point, we starting laughing hysterically, and then thanked him for all that he did for us. He looked at us both again with the same puzzled grin, and told us to have a great rest of the day. As we got up to go pay our bill, we decided to leave him a 20 dollar tip not only for his great customer service, but for his non-biased first impressions of us and his non-judgmental …show more content…
My wife and I had found that based on our first impressions of the waitress, that we were expecting a similar result with the waiter. In a sense, we were stereotyping the waiter even before we met him and continued to do so throughout our whole experience at the restaurant. We were judging everyone at the restaurant based on our initial experience, and not thinking about everyone on an individual basis. The waiter obviously wanted to make a great first impression, because he knew that if he did not that he would have to deal with the possibility of not receiving a tip. “Although impressions may well change as people get to know you better, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. It’s best to make that first impression count in your favor” (Nevid, 2014, p.
A common argument is the warning that government action in one aspect of the people’s lives predicts the generation of more invasive aspects, and the undermining of personal freedoms.
The staff at Granite City Food and Brewery, (a.k.a GCFB) uses five major theoretical approaches that contributes to society. Structural- functional, social conflict, gender- conflict, race conflict, and symbolic interactionism are different ways certain individuals interact amongst each other for the success of the company and more importantly, society as a whole. The staff of this restaurant uses various methods of communication but can also lead to conflicts. The research was conducted off the clock for the past two months without the knowledge of the staff other than managers and supervisors of the restaurant. As an employee of this business for almost a year, the staff has taught many valuable lessons such self-assurance, loyalty, obedience and respect.
When Tony left the table I again began to scan the restaurant. I noted that there were couples and groups of people in the restaurant. Many were Caucasian , African American and a few of Latin American descent . There were business men women in suits and ties. There were also several elderly couples sipping wine with their meals. The age range of all the patrons were from toddlers to elderly approximately 70 years of age.
The seemingly intimate couples observed were quite interesting. Instead of being seated opposite each other, most couples chose to sit next to each other so as to be within closer proximity of one another. The couples that did sit opposite each other spent much of their time bent over or leaning across the table so as to whisper or talk in a more secretive and intimate manner with their partner. The observed body language of these couples was that of an inclusive "please do not bother us" attitude. Their behavior compared to the rest of the occupants in the restaurant was very subdued and much more private. The amount of bodily contact was also much greater than in other groups of participants. Other than their initial glances around the restaurant when they were first seated, almost none of the couples made a habit of surveying the restaurant, as were observed quite frequently with the other members of the study.
After I paid and took my order, I looked around and there was an empty table in the corner. The tables and the floor were cleaned as soon as a customer leaves. I noticed a small group of young boys and girls entering in the McDonalds’ shop. They were all different nationalities (Greek, German, Nigerian and Italian). Maybe there were students to the local university. They ordered their meal and sat near to my table. They were too loud and started talking about their new-year plans. Next to them, an English family of four enjoyed their meal. Children were more likely to opt for kids’ meals like happy meals which include toys for the children that fascinate them. Families go for family meals and deals which provide cheaper rates for them. On the other side of McDonalds’ shop, there were people who were reading magazines, newspaper and books. In the entrance, a Chinese couple entered, they seemed like tourists as they had a map and a camera in their hand. During my presence in the shop, I noticed the division of labour comprised of more female staff than male. The reason behind such distribution of labour may be the timings that I chose to observe. The day timings may be more of comfort for the female staff and the night shifts might have more male members than female. Around 8 workers worked at a time excluding the manager. The staff comprised of English, French and Pakistani workers. The jobs were distributed in various categories
In addition, the wait staff was extremely accommodating of any special food preparation requests. It was a thrill to have our requests carried out with such perfection. A significant negative was the strong encouragement of the staff to complete the questionnaire at the conclusion of the meal evaluating the dining experience. Their persistence was unwelcomed at best.
The act of tipping came to America in the late 1800’s from England where it was already customary. Founded in a time period where it was a social custom to sit in a pub for hours, those who may have been in a rush to leave the establishment would simply give the bartender more money in order to be served quicker. The lore behind the word tip concludes that it is actually the acronym for the words “To Insure Promptitude” (Burton 1). And just as it stuck in America, tipping remains to be a cultural standard in England to this day. The demand for a high tip percentage in America far surpasses the amount expected
Whenever we go to restaurants we don't really think about how much influence our waitress have on our experience in the restaurant. We subconsciously expect them to treat us well, even though we don't realize that they have the power to determine whether we have a good time or not. This story challenges the idea and importance of giving a tip, often time we don't realize the hard work the waiters put in to make sure our experience is pleasant. A server can do the bare minimum of taking orders and bringing food to the table, but it is the ones who actually put a little extra effort into their work that really connect to people and make them want to come back.
This source wants to touch the reader about the issues encountered by the people working in fast food restaurants. I think the source is useful, but, the data given are a little be biased in favor of the waiters to make the readers understand how serious the topic should be considered. Compared to my others sources, this one provides written information and a documentary to make people fully understand the message the author wants to convey.
The interactionist perspective views society as a product of social interactions. It works best when applied to society because it focuses on micro-level interactions, meaningful symbols, and how human behavior is influenced because of these meaningful symbols. First, it focuses on micro-level interactions as opposed to macro-level interactions. Interactionism does not try to explain how a large-scale social structure relates to the individual, but tries to explain how an individual relates and interacts with another individual. Second, it focuses on the meaning we associate with certain gestures, symbols, or people. For example, when you give someone a thumbs up it is not just a meaningless gesture, it tells someone that you are good or doing
Article: If you mistakenly left a server a large tip, what would you do? When a drunken customer mistakenly left a hefty tip his meal at Thailicious in Edgewater, Colorado the server was ecstatic — until the customer returned the next morning asking for it back.
When I arrived to the restaurant I immediately noticed several social norms that everyone at the establishment was following. The customers and the staff were well dressed, and everyone was conducting himself or
For this social web assignment, I kept track of one hour each day for three separate days at different times and locations. I chose to write down my interactions this way so that I could get a well rounded idea of my interaction patterns in my real life. The first day I observed my interactions while I was at work in the Sonoma State University library. It was a typical afternoon and I worked the front desk with my supervisor, enjoying small conversation in between helping patrons. During this hour I talked to and helped twelve patrons and answered one phone call, all the while maintaining a smile on my face to ensure I was welcoming towards anyone who needed help. The second day I observed my interactions when I went to dinner with my sister.
Interaction analysis refers to an interdisciplinary method for experimentation of the interaction of people with each other and with their surrounding environment. It investigates our activities, verbal and nonverbal interaction, and the use of technologies, recognizing our regular practices and problems and the sources for their solution. It is deeply rooted in the fields like ethnography, sociolinguistics, ethnomethodology, conversation analysis, kinesics, and proxemics.
the rookie; you can always tell who this is by the first couple of minutes, they are very unsure of themselves and are shy and always seem scared by what could the next question be. the service isn't bad when you have a rookie waiter, but you can tell they are flustered and have so much going on at that exact moment. you'll ask
