Gerardo Piedra Justin Baker U.S. History 06 December 2017 Philippines American War The Philippine American War was an armed conflict between the first Philippine Republic and the United States that lasted 3 years from 1899 to 1902. At the beginning of this war Emilio Aguinaldo was in pretty much in control and had the american soldiers in control and had them beat but that was only in the first part of the war. Sooner rather than later the advantages the american military had came to show when they showed their dominance. To the people the three main reasons why the war began was that American soldiers brutalized Filipinos by just following orders, that americans would hurt and brutalize filipinos because they were less of a human, and lastly Americans were getting revenge for how Filipinos were treating American soldiers. …show more content…
In the document it says that the government immediately gave orders to burn the town and kill everyone in sight. Yes this brutalizing the filipinos but what can the americans do? Break orders and die just to save a couple of people. In Document A it says “ An old fellow came to the door and he looked out; he got shot in the stomach and fell to his knees and died then.” There was nothing those people could do they were innocent but because of the american government he was shot and died there. Another reason why the war started was because the Americans thought of themselves more of a human than a Filipino. The American soldiers would enjoy killing the filipinos because to them they were less than them and as I read in Document B the soldiers would say “ I am in the glory when i’m in sight , my gun and i see a dark skin and i pull the trigger.” That is telling us pretty much that we wouldn't take them serious because we just kill them for enjoyment. But we would torture
“...We govern our children without their consent...Would not the people of the Philippines prefer the just, human, civilizing government of this Republic…” (Doc B, Albert J. Beveridge). I disagree with this black and white view of the world. The Filipinos are grown people capable of making the best decision for themselves. Children are not (due to their undeveloped frontal lobes). They do not need America to save them. They wanted freedom enough to attempt war with Spain, a global power, so they have earned that
Upon McKinley’s assassination, a (relatively) young Theodore Roosevelt found himself in the position of President of the United States. A man of action – perhaps unnecessary action- Roosevelt was unafraid of the political consequences of his bold and often unilateral decision making, both domestically and abroad. U.S. governance in the Philippines had already
1899 marked the year when America set its sites from the Spanish to the First Philippine Republic plunging American into yet another war ending with the temporary annexation of the Philippine Islands spreading American imperialism to the Far East. Within one year of winning their independence from
Document Two: Aguinaldo criticizes America’s policies as America’s imperialistic effort to deny Philippines independence. In 1898 the U.S helped the Philippines gain their independence from Spain and they succeeded as Spain surrendered. His idea was to let the U.S know that he will fight for the Philippines real independence as U.S didn’t really let the Filipinos have their say on how they wanted to do things. He also brings up how the U.S government ignored all their promises and ignored the Filipinos rights and treated them as if they were an enemy. He then mentions how the U.S where governed by the British government and how they rebelled from it and the U.S succeeded to govern themselves. And he asks that the Filipinos get the same opportunity to
The fundamental reason for this war was impressment of American soldiers. (marines) by the British. British authorities boarded the American vessels and took any soldiers they were satisfied with. This started when the British soldiers Dr. ships in America. The British marine officers, were faced with labor issues and wrongfully impressed the United States citizens. United States if you do this as an affront to American sway. United States citizens viewed this as an affront to American sway and realized if one state could have slavery, America didn’t exactly have full
The two main causes for the war were the American’s obsession with the concept and maintenance of ‘Manifest Destiny’ and, the second cause was, the Texas War for Independence/Annexation. Manifest Destiny is, basically, the belief that the United States had a God-given right to occupy and civilize the whole continent. With more Americans looking for land to occupy westward due to the fact that there wasn’t enough space on the east coast, the fact that most of those areas were occupied didn’t matter. Instead, an attitude that English speaking American would do a better job of taking care of the lands than Native Americans of Spanish Speaking Mexicans ruled the minds
War of 1812 and industrialization- The british blockade forced the united states to develop its own industries
The bald red, white, and blue eagle of American Democracy is coming for you Phillipines, run while you can! Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was so infatuated with the idea of democracy, and he wanted every country to have a little taste of American freedom! After America's victory in the Spanish American War, George Dewey and his 11,000 American troops marched into manila and were unsure whether to liberate or occupy the filipino people. Thinking the they were here to help, the Filipino rebels trusted the Americans, but were soon betrayed as Dewey decided to occupy the land. The United States had three choices to determine what they wanted to do with the Philippines: Give it back to Spain, Give the filipino people their freedom, or to annex the whole country itself. With much debate ranging from artists, influential citizens, and government officials, the US ultimately decided it would annex! The United States should not have annexed the Philippines but rather should have given them their independence. While others may think the annexation of the Philippines would have benefited them, what the Philippines really needed was
The Mexican-American War was the first war Americans fought on foreign soil. (Staff H. C., 2015) James K. Polk, president at the time, thought the United States had a “Manifest Destiny.” The only problem with his philosophy was that Mexico could not disagree more with America. With battles like Monterrey, Sacramento, and the Siege of Veracruz America was able to advance further in the war. The war lasted for 2
On April 19th, 1898, The United States impulsively waged a war with imperialist Spain that would forever change our country for better and for worse. There are many different factors that led to the war, but in my opinion, one key cause is of much greater importance than the others. As a result of the war, American became known as an imperialistic nation and a world power. How could such a “little” war have such a large impact on American society at the turn of the 20th century?
President Theodore Roosevelt officially ended the Phil-Am War on July 4, 1901; the estimated civilian people killed are ranging from 250,000 to 1 million. He proclaimed his apology to the Filipinos, who participated in the insurrection against the Spaniards continuing up to the Americans, establishing peace between the two countries. Even though the Philippines is under the United States, the Philippines had its first elected assembly; followed by the Jones Act in 1916 stating the nation’s independence. And as of 1946, the United Stated of America granted the Philippines’
The Mexican-American war was a conventional conflict battled y traditional armies made up of cavalry and artillery that were mostly European war tactics. The American’s managed to penetrate Mexican land which resorted to using guerrilla warfare as a defence strategy when the Americans penetrated their territory. After the hostilities began, the U.S. military embarked on a three-pronged tactic that was designed to capture Northern Mexico forcing them to retaliate. Two groups of American militaries went to southern Texas, and the third troop led by Colonel Kearny embarked to the western region-New Mexico. General Zachary’s army defeated the Mexican military after a series of battles in De Palma necessitating them to move to the south to gain more victory over the Mexicans. The seizure of Monterey and Los Angeles by the U.S. Navy granted them a second victory. A three-day
In Document A, the American fear that the Philippines governor wants to get rid of “the spirit of 1776” in the island, which means to get rid of their independence. But when America won the war the Filipinos didn’t have Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness. In document D, William Jennings Bryan says “ we dare not educate” the Filipinos which he is making a joke. He is saying if they teach the Filipinos how to read they will realize they aren’t getting life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness from the Declaration of Independence. Bryan’s says that it isn’t necessary to take colonies in order to get rich, like other Americans believe. He said it’s not righteous because you're owning someone. He said they could have still gotten rich trading with the Philippines without having to own
During the start of the battle in 1846, when James K. Polk declared war against the Mexican’s, the nation was divided. One part of the war and the other half against. While slave owners saw it as “ a place to extend slavery,” others such as Frederick Douglas saw it as “robbing Mexico of her territory.” The Mexican American War rose out of the desire of expansion and resulted in new discoveries.
After the war ended in 1902, United States was on a mission to repair the damages that the Philippines had endured; they wanted to win back the trust of its people. President McKinley created laws that gave the Philippines some of the same provisions as America regarding government structure. According to Sonia M. Zaide, an expert Filipino historian, the Philippines was on its way to rebuilding itself:
