The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with an insight into the Super Hero Series Batman. This crime fighter originally appeared in Detective Comics issue #27 in 1939. It later became a comic book series, a TV series and a movie series. The character Batman is second only to Superman as a Super Hero. Amazingly Batman has no super powers, but he does have a lot of neat crime fighting gadgets. In this paper, we will explore the creation of Batman, his supporting cast of characters both good and bad and the gadgets he used.
Batman was created after Detective Comics (D.C.) wanted a new super hero to follow-up after Superman. In May of 1933, Bob Kane and Bill Finger created Batman. Bob was born on October 24, 1915

Batman was a hero by night and during the day he is the wealthy Bruce Wayne. When Bruce was a young child he watched his mom and dad get mugged and murdered after a family outing at the movies. The criminal then turned pointing the gun to shoot at the young Bruce Wayne and said, “Have you ever danced with the devil in the pail moon light?” The arrival of the police saved Bruce Wayne that day. Dr. Leskue Tomkins, a wealthy Gotham City resident and his butler, Alfred Pennyworth took custody of Bruce. Shortly afterwards, the Bruce and his guardians moved away from Gotham. Bruce studied criminal minds, behavior, and patterns. He also learned different ways to fight crime and the art of self-defense. He mastered all of these by the age of 14, then he moved back to Gotham City. Upon his return, he observed criminals at night. He did this until he felt comfortable to capture them by himself. On the first night of crime fighting he was almost killed. Luckily he was brought back to his study in the Wayne Mansion to heal. As he was looking out a window, he got the idea of becoming Batman. Bruce and Alfred created his Batman outfit, making it bullet proof and fire-resistant. They added a weighted cape along with night vision on his mask. Finally they added the famous utility belt which consisted of many different pieces of crime fighting equipment. The belt held bat-rings, decel jump lines, grapnels, micro
Batman is a depiction of hope. Batman was the answer to a lot of people’s problems in a place where nobody felt safe like they should in their home. He was like the rain after a long, dry spell for
From that point, it is when he begins the path of trials in his search for Utnapishtim, which requires passing through the darkness of Mount Mashu guarded by scorpion-men and eventually crossing the waters of death. The scorpion-men said to Gilgamesh: “It is impossible, Gilgamesh, nobody has passed through the mountain’s inaccessible tract.” This, in fact, shows the characteristics of courage, bravery, and superhuman strength that Gilgamesh acquires as a hero. Like Gilgamesh, Bruce also acquires those characteristics through his heroic quest. However, Bruce’s path is more traditional than Gilgamesh’s. At the beginning, Ra’s al Ghul’s training serve as trials that make Bruce stronger and more aware of what he is going to deal with in the outside. Later on, he experiences many adventures fighting crime in the streets of Gotham. Along the way, Bruce encounters a woman named Rachel Dawes, who is the assistant District Attorney and his child love, which he develops a relationship with. Rachel says to Bruce: “It’s not who you are underneath. It’s what you do that defines you.” Although, her intensions are to inspire Bruce to be good, she takes on the role of a temptress because every time Bruce is with her, it makes him want to give up the role of Batman. Thus, once can say that both Bruce and Gilgamesh are brave and strong heroes that are determined to achieve their goals and no obstacles will stop them from continuing their
Lastly, Bruce Wayne uses his massive wealth and intelligence to build gadgets, utilities, and tools all in an effort to stop villains—most of whom are not mortal. We have to realize that Batman is still a mortal man, and can be killed if due so. Therefore, not only does he have the intelligence to build whatever to defeat his foes, but he also has the cunningness to defeat them as well. This is evident in the Batman television series from 1966 to 1969, with Adam West. Moreover, many of these works that he creates has also caused him lots of pain and trouble that he self-situated himself in. One of the key examples is him battling Bane, where all his utilities has no use, and he was pummeled by him.
Batman originally began as a DC Comics' detective a superhero quite different from the one envisioned by Nolan and company today. Batman was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger in 1939 for Detective Comics, and for more than two decades it depicted a hero defined by his mystery-solving techniques and cast of quirky characters against whom his braininess and eccentric costume could be balanced (along with his knack for solving crimes). Needless to
In this dissertation I will discuss how DC Comics have developed and improved the design of their comic books since their establishment in 1937. I will compare comics from past and present and talk about the different styles of comic books that have been released from the company. I will also talk about how the artwork from the comic books have influenced character and costume design in recent DC Comic films. I will do this by studying the history of the company and researching the designers behind the comic books. I will thoroughly research in detail the characters and the designs of their costume and equipment and compare them to the different films that have been released over the years. The main character I will look into is Batman. I will study the origins of the character, the man behind the character, the reason behind Batman’s creation, how he has changed over the years, the development of other characters in the series, the famous villains that Batman has had to face, the different costumes he has had over the years and I will also be researching and studying how Batman has become a national icon in American society, and the effects the character has had on people living in the country. Batman
There are many other reasons as to why Bruce Wayne is not just a superhero but rather a person who has a disorder. When he "switches" from Bruce Wayne to Batman, he does not even notice. It is almost as if it is automatic. Nobody realizes that the respectable businessman Bruce Wayne is Batman by night. It appears that he is Batman for many reasons but a major one is that he fears that something terrible will happen to other people just like it happened to him when he was younger. He tries to save others from getting hurt from outlaws and evildoers.
Heroic heroes, Batman and Gilgamesh, perform numerous brave deeds. Before Bruce becomes Batman, he receives expert training from the League of Shadows high in the mountains where he learns how to disappear, face his fears, and become more than a man. In the Iliad, Achilles has the same concept of a special weapon, his armor. In both of Batman and Gilgamesh’s’ lives, they experience a tremendously traumatic event that changes their outlook on the world and life. Batman, Bruce Wayne, watches his parents be murdered in front of his own eyes as a young child and then blames himself for their death for his entire life, until he is taught to forget the past and make the future. Gilgamesh also had someone close to him die, his best friend.
The main conflicts in the world of The Dark Knight Returns revolve around escalating crime in Gotham city and forces of the authority attempting to control it. The authority should be a moral force and represent justice. The figures that represent the authority should be selfless and work only to promote the integrity of law and order. Authority proves to be contradictory in Miller’s novel as the authoritative figures express qualities of vigilantism and overall moral ambiguity.
This source discusses the most popular superheroes and how they relate in their own given time period. It makes connections with the major time periods in and the location of the publications. For my essay I intend to use the time period and publication locations to show relation in the societies culture through their superheroes. This source is also very credible being that the author Joseph Darowski has not only a BA and MA, but a PHD as well. He’s written 15 other books that been published.
Another way in which Batman displays himself as a Byronic hero is his function as a subversive character which refuses to submit to demonic forces. He tries to appear to be a man who is morally upright. However, Batman is unable to separate himself from the pain of his parents ' untimely death, which gives him a new identity as a mysterious masked crime fighter. In most books and films, he tries to put this tragic incident behind him without much success. As Peter J. Tomasi indicates, “instead we see a presentation of Batman’s powers by exacting strange acts in the name of justice like teleporting hotheaded” (1).
Batman: The Dark Knight directed by Christopher Nolan is non-stop action thriller that continually did the unexpected. The film is based off of the original Batman comic book but additionally changes the perception of the everyday world as good to naturally bad. Throughout the movie, Batman stands for honesty and goodness while the Joker is a symbolism of chaos and evil. Both sides are forced to make quick-witted decisions in order to stop the opposing vigilante from doing his desired work. The citizens of Gotham are put in the heart of this circumstance and feel obligated to go against their values to stop the chaos. Numerous people habitually pursue their dreams and values but often become blinded from their
Batman’s violent actions in Frank’s Miller comic book demonstrated the darkness of his heroic personality. After ten year retirement, Batman became more troubled to Gotham City turning to a crime-ridden and a fugitive. According to Joseph Campbell words “everything begins with a story”. The beginning of Batman’s story started after the death of his parents. They were shot by some criminals because they were going to steal and hurt them. Having to experienced this horrible scene on his childhood, traumatized Batman
When he is not suited up for combat, he is Bruce Wayne, billionaire industrialist and notorious playboy. “Bruce Wayne’s playboy persona is a “mask” he wears to hide his identity as Batman” (Porterfield).
Bruce Wayne uses all of the strength he possesses in order to keep Batman from being free despite his relentless struggles to break free from the chains that keep him. The usage of dramatic lines the author uses and the constant shadows creates the imagery of captivity and the innermost thoughts and struggles that Bruce Wayne possesses deep inside. Cell bars represent the windows on the panels of this
Though Batman tries to be portrayed as a hero, he is only a vigilante since he helps the law, but is not a part of it. This means that he fights crime, but is not a member of the police force or other civil duties that
