Analysis: Should Adolescents Be Tried As Adults

The question of whether adolescents should be tried as adults or not is an ongoing issue in our country. Every state in the United States has a procedure in place to prosecute adolescents as adults under specific conditions. With this, many lives of adolescents can be ruined. Adolescents accused of violent crimes should not be tried as adults because they can easily be influenced to make poor decisions. Adolescents are more likely to become more violent or can continue to commit multiple crimes once they’re released from adult prison. While serving their sentence in prison, adolescents are surrounded by ruthless criminals who have committed more immense, harsh crimes. According to the article Treat Kids and Adults Different, it asserts that, “Harsh sentencing acts as a deterrent to kids who are considering committing crimes. Trying children as adults has coincided with lower rates of juvenile crimes.” There is some truth to sentencing adolescents as adults can lessen juvenile crimes, but once released from prison “66 percent of youth who have been arrested will become repeat offenders within 24 months. 49 percent of youth become repeat offenders within the first year.” (“20 Juvenile Repeat Offenders Statistics”). While being incarcerated, they only get worse instead of them learning how harsh the consequence can be if they were to commit the same crime, they become ruthless. It is a commonly believed idea that while being incarcerated adolescents are sent to solitary confinement to get away from the harmful criminals. Most adolescents are put in solitary confinement, giving them the isolation they need to ponder. On the contrary, isolating them can cause them to suffer and get damaged mentally and possibly physically. According to the NAMI Foundation, “Placing juveniles in solitary confinement can permanently impact development and increases risk of suicide. Youth in custody have a four times greater risk of suicide than their peers.” This indicates that adolescents feel as if they won’t be able to be given a second chance at trying to redeem themselves. Adolescents are “36 times more likely to commit suicide than those in juvenile facilities,” because they don’t have the support system they need.
