1. Terms of Reference
Within this report and portfolio there is going to be analysis on different employability skills covered within this my first year at university and, evidence of how they are incorporated in my own development as a Business Leadership and Corporate Management student to successfully hold a placement for the next two years of my degree.
2. Why Employability Matters?
Employability is a key determination around the way the world works. It ‘is about being capable of getting and keeping fulfilling work’ where people can move through jobs in different markets maintaining employment. (Hillage & Pollard, 1998, p. 2) In 2009 a survey completed by the Confederation of British Industry concluded that ‘employability skills was one of the most important factors when recruiting graduates.’ (CBI, 2009, p.11) Through universities, colleges, employers and the government focusing on implementing employability in to core education this not only helps with student engagement around the idea of employment (HEFCE, 2011, p.5), but also helps to ‘foster and develop a culture of progression and life-long learning’ (Cole & Tibby, 2013, p.5).
3. What are Employability Skills?
Employability skills can be described as ‘having a set of skills, knowledge and personal attributes that make a person more likely to secure, and be successful in their chosen occupation’ (Hinchcliffe, 2001, p. 8). Reflective writing deals with both description and analysis which helps in clarifying thoughts, understanding important aspect and working out strategies in solving problems. Reflective writing is beneficial to individuals especially students. For individuals, it gives them the opportunity to think critically about what and why they do things and for academic perspective, it provides students the idea on their learning experience and helps them identify any academic issues they need to address.

Students find it very difficult to understand what they need to do to prepare for the workforce. The first year of Business Administration program sufficiently covers almost all of the skills described in the Employability skills 2000+ handout from the Conference Board of Canada, at least as well as can be done in a single year.
In recent years, the UK has seen many major changes in the Higher Education which has affected the graduate labour market in many ways (Wilton, 2010). In 2013 there were 12 million graduates in the UK; a ‘graduate’ is classified as a person who has left education with qualifications above an A-Level standard, such as a university degree. In April to June 2013 there were 31 million people in the UK who were not enrolled on any educational course (ONS, 2013).

In the article “Are They Really Ready to Work?,” editors Jill Casner-Lotto and Linda Barrington reveal the views of employers on the preparedness of incoming people into the modern workforce in the U.S. Do the graduates of high schools and colleges have the skills to make it in todays workforce? According to reliable sources like The Conference Board, the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, and the Society for Human Resource Management, the U.S. is not correctly preparing students. High school graduates lack more skills than graduates of college. College graduates are more successful, but not at an expectable rate. While the incoming workforce lacks skills like basic knowledge and applied skills, they are excelling in many other areas also.

Employability Skills can be defined as the transferable skills needed by an individual to make them 'employable '. Along with good technical understanding and subject knowledge, employers often outline a set of skills that they want from an employee.

Throughout the course of my workplace practices class I have participated in a consisted of completing assignments and work experience regarding my career pathways. As I look back and reflect on my time at this course, I am able to explore the graduate qualities and capabilities I have achieved over the duration of this study period, as well as the skills and abilities I need to improve on. Graduate employers across all industries want more than just a degree; they want graduates who can demonstrate a wide range of skills, attributes and knowledge, often called ‘employability skills’. Graduate businesses over all ventures need something beyond a degree; they need graduates who can exhibit an extensive variety of abilities, properties and information, regularly called 'employability aptitudes'.
