Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been was it all a dream? The suspenseful short story has a theory where Connie could of been dreaming the whole thing. Through “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been”, A short story Joyce Carol Oates writes how it could be a suspenseful dream. In the short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” Joyce Carol Oates shows that it is all a dream by use the plot, imagery , and setting throughout the story. Work on spacing by commas Within the plot of of “Where Are You Going, Where have You Been Connie tries to pick up the phone when a tinging breaks out in her ear. Oates writes “she, ran into the back room and, picks up the telephone. Something roared in her ear a tiny roaring in her ear a tiny roaring in her ear, a tiny roaring in her ear, and she was so sick with fear that her finger groped down to the but too weak to touch it”(Oates 8 ). When her ear is ringing she could still hear when usually it rings you can't hear out of it. When she picked up the phone, she could the ringing started in her ear. When she puts the phone down and kicks it away, the ringing stops, like she is listening to every single command he was saying. She wants people to treat her like an adult, and isa tired of be treated like a child. All that Connie wants is to be treated like an adult, but when she is going through the dream she realised that she was not ready to be an adult, because when she had to make an a decision she was scared that she would make the wrong one. The dream made Connie come to a conclusion that she was not ready to be treated like an adult. Connie realised that the dream was teaching her a lesson that she may not be ready to be an adult. Connie said that her father is coming back to get me and Arnold said no he is not. Oates writes “but my Father’s coming back. He’s coming to get me.
