Violence should never be glorified. Tupac’s song mentions that he was beating a police officer. I would understand if he was defending himself, but a little effort in understanding who would be listening to his songs would lead him to tone down the violent message. After the police beating, a gun shows up and someone kills a police officer. This hate is simply generating more hate. Police officers and their families would be outraged by that. Even if some of us don’t have family, we all have loved ones. It is simply not right for people to be killed by simply doing their jobs.

To gaze into the lyrics of both Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur is like living in the ghettos of New York City where violence never stops. Both of these artists grew up seeing and living a life filled with violence. Gunshots and drive-byes, death and murder were a daily occurrence. Although the lyrics of both artists are simply telling their life stories and how hard it was to grow up in their “hoods” they contain vulgar, hateful, and sexual verses that send the wrong message to their listeners. Whether these listeners are teens or adults, white or black, they are continually sending notions of hatred and fear through their lyrics and actions. Ultimately,
In “Eminem Is Right” Mary Eberstadt uses Ethos, Pathos, and Kairos effectively to touch on a very talked about topic at the turn of the century. Eberstadt uses these rhetoric devices to take a different approach on the content of today’s music. Ethos is used to connect a relationship between the themes in the different generation of music, Pathos to look behind the words used in the music, and Kairos gives more strength to the other rhetorical devices used in the article. Eminem might just be right according to Mary Eberstadt.
Tupac Shakur is often regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time. He was born on June 16, 1972 in East Harlem, New York City, New York to Afeni Shakur. Tupac was almost born in prison because of Afeni’s involvement in the black nationalist group the Black Panther Party. Luckily she was acquitted one month before Tupac was born. Tupac loved his mother and dedicated a song for her titled “Dear Mama”.
In her essay, Eberstadt reveals the influence of lyrics on teenagers and their relationship with their parents. She took as example famous American rapper Eminem and his music, and she describes the negative attitude of parents to contemporary music. When comparing the impact of music’s lyric on
I agree that violent or antisocial lyrics heavily influence the behavior of young people who listen to the lyrics. I agree because younger people are more easily influenced and peer pressured. Moreover, the meaning behind the lyrics and the lyrics may speak or pressure young people to try something. As a young person that listens to music a lot, lyrics speak volume to me and influence me at times. Young people may also want to act out or copy the meanings behind the lyrics like violent acts. For example, a teenager listening to a violent rap song with lyrics stating that you need to beat somebody up if they offend you. The teenager may act out or reproduce that lyric if someone offends him because of an artist’s influence on him. Artists that create these songs and lyrics influence their young audience with their choice of words.
In the late 1950s, Rock and Roll began to pick up and get very popular. It became big among young people of the generation. While it was found captivating for teens, many adults at the time formed strong criticisms and dissatisfactions of the music. They tended to believe that Rock brought out “animalism and vulgarity” (Kornhaber). Nowadays, the very popular music choice amongst teenagers is rap. Just like what happened with Rock and Roll, there is a great deal of criticism about this music choice as well.
Tupac Shakurs death was a very tragic lost to the world of music. Now you know who think is responsible for that tragedy. It wasn’t his friends, family, rapper, none of that stuff. No it was because of some conflict with a gang and a man called Orlando
The impact music had on teenagers was significant. Teenager’s developed a new style of music called Rock ‘n’ Roll, because the lyrics reflected and embraced their lives. High school sweethearts, fast-cars, and rebellion against authority resembled what teenagers craved the most. Parents disliked the message and influence behind the lyrics of Rock ‘n’ Roll, because they believed it caused juvenile delinquency. Parents hated the sexuality of the songs, the performers,
The corruptness of music today seems to be linked to the crude language and aggression found particularly in hip-hop and rap music. Some rap artists use vulgar language in their lyrics that are easily adoptable by teens (Holden). Not only have certain lyrics influenced the way teens speak but also their actions. An article on Headliners.org stated that “lyrics in the music are too violent and are to blame for many problems.” The problems range anywhere from suicide and aggression towards women to underage drinking and drug use. Lyrics are not only to blame, but also what people see in artists’ music videos can affect what they do (Doaks). The urge to emulate these rap musicians has escalated quickly causing a spike in rebellious tendencies among teens.
Music has an important role in children and adolescent’s life. Mainstream music is heard almost everywhere whether it’s on a laptop, phone, radio, cd, etc. The accessibility allows anyone to hear it at any place and situation, alone or with friends. The lyrics can have a big impact on everyone’s life’s differently. Lyrics have become more explicit in their references to misogyny, drugs and violence particularly in certain genres, like rap. I used to love to listen to rap all the time, never paying attention to what the rapper was saying. According to the dictionary rap means “Words (that) are recited rapidly and rhythmically over a prerecorded, typically electronic instrumental backing” I used to listen to rap because
Thesis: Music such as Rap and Rock-n-Roll have a negative impact in the youth in our society, the music promotes violence, sexism, and vulgar language.
This conception that music has the power to influence someone to commit a violent act is a belief that has been continuously controversial throughout history. For example, Elvis Presley’s gyrating hip movement that began when he performed his song “Hound Dog” was considered highly controversial (Caywood). It was seen as too sexual and was highly criticized, then there was rock and heavy metal. The bands subject to scrutiny in these categories were the likes of Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Marilyn Manson and many more. The genre of heavy metal rock has been the target of most people because of the amount of reports that show that fans of heavy metal fans have the most problems with suicide and problems with authority in schools. However, now a new popular genre of music known as rap has taken center stage as being the cause for violence and problems that people are dealing with. These genres are the most controversial because of the lyrical material, in a study it was found that of the top 10 selling cd in 1999, found that forty two percent of the songs contained sexual content and that the rock and rap songs contained material that related to death, suicide, homicide and substance abuse (Pediatrics). In a study conducted it was found that twenty five percent of male and seventeen percent of female adolescents liked their favorite song because the "lyrics were a reflection of their feelings” (Pediatrics). This
The Controversial Life of Tupac Shakur Despite his reputation as a criminal and a thug, Tupac Shakur effectively spread his message of the unfairness in society through his storytelling, music, and public stance to increase awareness of discrimination against African Americans. Tupac Amaru Shakur came into the world on June 16, 1971 in Brooklyn, New York. While poverty stricken,Tupac faced many obstacles as a child and an adolescent. All his life, Shakur used issues in his family as an underlying conflict and expressed these issues while growing up.
Boom, boom! Boom, boom! The kind of bass that drains batteries and the kind of lyrics that unload clips, these are the sounds that rap music produces. I chose this topic because I am extremely interested in rap music and I want to explore the violent aspect of the industry. I have never had a chance to look at the violent side of it and I plan to find answers to questions I have in my search. Tupac Shakur is one of my favorite artists and when he was shot and killed I really started to take notice of the violence. People were getting killed because of an image that was being set. What I really want to know, however, is why rappers feel compelled to graphically describe the violence.
For many years, the youth have been known for singing along to their favorite song and taking that song as whole and using it as their motto for life. It may seem that sometimes these kids do not know what is being said in the music but this shows that they do know what the lyrics are saying. According to Franklin B. Krohn and Frances L. Suazo in their article “Contemporary Urban Music: Controversial Messages in Hip-Hop and Rap Lyrics,” many teenagers and minority groups view rappers as their spokesmen because of their ability to speak in street language and bluntly express their frustration (Krohn, 1995). Unfortunately, hip hop lyrics usually tend to talk about drugs, sex and violence leading kids to think that everything they hear is okay and that is how they have to live their life. Yet, there are artists out there who take their lyricist skills to give positive lyrics and messages in their music, but these songs are not often played in the mainstream.
