Week Four Thoughts The video quotes, “Individuals are afraid of succeeding because of fear” (Mateusz, Brown, Thomas, & Smith, 2013). This quote captured my attention upon my initial viewing of the video titled, “Dream: Motivational Video,” because of the boldness it projected to the audience. The speech is approximately six minutes and was published on July 2, 2013. It provides the audience with a background on how they should make their dreams real. Although obstacles will develop when we are trying to fulfill dreams—the purpose is to separate from negativity and dream big. Even though the fear of failure overtakes our mind, we cannot allow the fear to deter us from living out our dream. Finally, the speech uses clips from movies titled, Into The Wild, Rocky 4, Seven Pounds, Pursuit of Happyness, and A Beautiful Mind that are inspirational and encouraging. For that reason, this synopsis examines the effectiveness of motivational speaking against the concepts that are found in Bateman and Snell’s text to propose that communication, motivating and inspiring people are essential to being an effective leader.
Discussion
The motivational video expresses a few concepts discussed this week, including: communication, motivating and inspiring people. First, communication is used in every form of our daily living. The video begins with an effective form of communication and explains the significance of believing in yourself and accomplishing your dreams—by any means
In the book Unstoppable by Tim Green, the theme is to not give up on your dream no matter how many obstacles are in your way.
Christian Ullman Rebecca Romanow FLM-352 30 April 2015 Final Essay Throughout the semester, we’ve watched quite a few movies that represent “chaos cinema” and "slow cinema". Stork claims that, chaos cinema has a very distinct style that "trades visual intelligibility for sensory overload." According to Flanagan, slow cinema emphasizes on "the employment of long takes, decentered and understated modes of storytelling, and a pronounced emphasis on quietude and the everyday...an aesthetic of slow." Strange Days (Kathryn Bigelow) and The Wild Bunch (Sam Peckinpah) are two movies that seem to follow the "classical cinema" formula, and at the same time, resemble both chaos and slow cinema in different ways and at different times.
In this movie, Eli had the mission to take The Book to the west. This book was the only book left after all of them were destroyed after the war. For 31 years, he kept walking to the west where the book could be safe. In his way, he found many obstacles that he had to overcome to reach his purpose. Some of these obstacles were that he had to fight, kill, and suffer pain, but he never lost his purpose. He was guided by his faith and no by his sight. With his perseverance and his firm purpose, he completed his task. Even though he had to relinquish the book to the leader of the gangs who wanted to use it as a tool to obtain power, and to control other towns. Once, Eli reached the sanctuary at the west he dictated all the book to a writer who
The movie Wild, which was released in the year 2014 and was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, the movie is an adaption of Wild by Cheryl Strayed. The movie closely follows the book for guidance. However, the movie does have some added scenes which the book does not mention. Moreover, the movie is quite short and concise and misses some points or describes them in a brief way whereas the book elaborated all of them in a beautiful movie. In both the movies, the reader or viewer gets to watch or read the point of view of Cheryl, a 26-year-old who had lost her mother at the young age of 22 as she suffered from lung cancer. The book follows a first person point of view and is written in non-fiction. This quotation gives us an idea of what kind of a format and
This paper explores the “Spirit” of Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a class activity. Using a real life example (my daughter’s participation as a high school basketball athlete) as a case study to dissect, I attempted to apply what I’ve learned this week in order to help my daughter overcome a self-defeated attitude that has reduced her confidence and motivation to play basketball and also participate in her true passion, theater (drama) performances. My objective was to apply, through empathic and reflective communication, fundamental principles of motivational interviewing (MI) to help guide her toward autonomous motivation.
Michel Gondry’s 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, deals with themes of memory, identity and love. The film focuses on a lonely man named Joel Barish and his progressively dysfunctional relationship with Clementine Kruczynski. As their relationship deteriorates, they both decide individually to get the memories of each other erased from their minds at Lacuna Inc. Throughout the film, Joel demonstrates to the viewer, that although he is thoroughly unhappy, he begins to regret his agreement to the procedure and desperately tries to cling onto the happiest moments of his life. The scene directly before the sequence I have chosen is a memory of the first and only time that Joel was so happy he could “die right now”; lying on the
Martin Luther King says “I still have a dream” to convey that being determined lets people believe, and motivates them to fight for their dream. With this kind of determination, anything is
This speech was given at McConomy Auditorium at Carnegie Mellon University on Tuesday, September 18, 2007. The speech was called, Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams. The topic was about having dreams and perusing them, even though you may not get the exact results you were hoping for, you can still grow as a person. One example of this was that Randy wanted to be a professional football player. Due to his size this was never going to happen, but he did play youth football, (not very well). Randy learned many of his life lessons while be criticized by his couches to work hard and give one hundred percent.
Eddie Harris Jr. once said, “It takes a dream to get started, desire to keep going, and determination to finish.” This quote really reminds me of a song from Big Sean’s album Dark Sky Paradise. Many people said that this song will make you cry, but it teaches people a great life lesson about achieving dreams. The song is called, “One Man Can Change the World” by Big Sean and “it depicts a unique message to his fans about never giving up and making dreams come true.” (Cited from "Big Sean Gets Inspirational With Powerful 'One Man Can Change The World' Music Video." Hollywood Life.) This message is delivered through its syntax, tone, and diction.
In Michael Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), the connections between people and memories become the focal point of a very unique romance. Through the use of new technology, the possibility of erasing memories makes painful relationships disappear like they never happened. The tale of Joel and Clementine allows the audience to rethink and question the process they undergo as beneficial or destructive. Though the process might be helpful in eliminating the pain caused from another person, four key scenes show how the lessons learned through relationship experiences are important.
For more than fifty years, Clint Eastwood has been actively defining and redefining cinema as an art form. His experiences as an actor on television and in film have greatly influenced his directing style. Across his films, Eastwood incorporates several issues and techniques that help the audience to identify said films with Eastwood's directorial style. Eastwood's aim in his films is to tell stories of the human experience. Francois Truffaut and Andrew Sarris have aimed to define the qualities that make a director an auteur whose works stand out above the rest. The qualities defined by Truffaut and Sarris can be seen in Eastwood films including Unforgiven (1992), Million Dollar Baby (2004), and Changeling (2008) and help to establish Eastwood as an auteur.

Genre theory is used to study films and put them into a classification so that audiences know what type of film it is before they see it. Genres are categories based on the story of the film, sometimes the actors and actresses, or even the directors. All films fall under a genre or sub-genre category. Romantic Comedy is an example of a genre which is light-hearted, humorous story involving people in love, sometimes overlapping with subgenres such as screwball comedy teen comedy, or gross-out comedy. ( Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014, table 4.1). This paper will focus on the romantic comedy genre and movie Rocky. It will take a better look at the specific conventions of this genre and how this movie fits the gangster genre.
