Joshua Gardner 1 Feb 2018 2nd Block How the Leopard got its Claws “How the Leopard got its Claws” is a story that tells the reader how the leopard's difficult journey of betrayal and vengeance changed his appearance on the outside as well as who he was on the inside. At the beginning of the story, the leopard is a gentle ruler. It can be inferred that this gentleness is displayed through his outward appearance. He had no need for claws or fangs, because he rules his dominion with wisdom and kindness. In stark contrast to the leopard is the dog, who isolated himself from others, because of their cruel remarks. The dog chose to remain a recluse from the other animals and only sought them out when his own home had been brought to disrepair. It was only after he showed his display of power through violence that the animals began to fear and worship him as their king. While this story is many years old, it's moral can be transferred into modern day: it is not the action of others that make a person who he is, but how that person reacts to those actions. If there is no competition a ruler might become complacent and comfortable with the status quo. Americans can relate to this, because we too have become sedentary and biddable with who we allow to lead us. While the president is not a “ruler,” but an elected official, his portrayal in the media is often one of complacency. The media's portrayal of the president can easily send a message to other countries and our enemies that America is without guidance. So, like the leopard, our President is portrayed as ineffective because he is not respected by some of his own people.
