New Presidency and Abortion Americans recently elected a new president. As some people expected, there have been some changes made to our health care bill, government funding, tax reform and more changes are proposed but have not passed yet. Donald Trump, a new American president, have a different opinion about health care structure and funding in the United States than previous president Barak Obama. Some of the reforms proposed by Trump since he took over the office, such as Obamacare repeal, failed to pass earlier this year. According to Caldwell (2017), “Senate Republicans failed to pass a pared-down Obamacare repeal bill early Friday on a vote of 49-51 that saw three of their own dramatically break ranks”. Millions of low class citizens, that are unable to afford an insurance, are being served by Planned Parenthood. Trump’s Executive orders and Congress’ bills may influence the Planned Parenthood’s ability to perform its primary responsibilities, if funding discontinues. It might also negatively affect many American workers that are currently employed by Planned Parenthood. Since hospitals operate as bureaucracies, nurses and doctors have no control over the decisions that are being made. At the hospitals the board of directors and its members are making the decisions based on what the government instruct them to do. At this point, no law or bill has passed to discontinue the funding of Planned Parenthood. According to Luhby (2017), “President Trump's health care executive order is designed to increase competition and choice. But it would also deal a major blow to the health of Obamacare”. Although congress did not pass Obamacare repeal bill, Trump found a way to change original Obamacare law by issuing a new executive order. Government, a social institution, is being beneficial for Planned Parenthood until and if a new law is passed that will discontinue the funding, then it will become detrimental for people that rely on Planned Parenthood. The functionalism of the government is very complicated. Congress and its members have more power than a president in making
In January 2016, Congress passed a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, a family planning group that runs more than 800 reproductive health clinics across the United States. They wanted to cut Planned Parenthood because they perform abortions. Most people don’t know they only do them for certain situations. If you were raped and the pregnancy is still early they will perform it. If the pregnancy was included in incest they might terminate it due to problems that would be cause in the baby due to alike DNA. In other cases if the pregnancy was harming the mother they might also do it then. That's not all what planned parenthood does though. They also have operations that include prevention pregnancy by distributing birth control and free condoms. They also educate the public about contraception, they reduce the spread of STD’s through education, testing, and treatment. They also screen for cervical and other cancers. Planned Parenthood offers so much but cutting tax funds they wouldn’t be able to offer a lot of those things. More than 5 million men and women world 5 million men and women worldwide use their services
On April 8, 2011, the United States Federal Government nearly shut down because the Democrats and Republicans were struggling to agree upon, among other issues, what to do with Planned Parenthood. The Republicans wanted to stop federal funding for Planned Parenthood, which clearly shows “that they simply don’t care about the health and safety of American women (Planned Parenthood).” The Democrats strongly support Planned Parenthood and were not willing to accept the Republican’s proposal. However, the Republicans did not care whether a shut down could occur or create tensions in the government. A federal shut down would only make matter worse especially during this time because of issues already going on in America and around the world.
This current debate whether Planned Parenthood should be funded by the Federal Government is a hot issue in the current election. It has become, not only a nationwide issue, but also worldwide where people from all around the world are able to put in their input on the argument. There are many people who
Many of these healthcare services would be difficult to get elsewhere since many are covered by Medicaid reimbursements. When taking numbers into consideration an estimate of “390,000 [women] served by Planned Parenthood would lose access to care in the first year after defunding” (The Times Editorial Board 2017). This situation will only make the health system worse by leaving certain categories of people at stake for the pleasure of others, Republicans as the authors of the article would describe this issue as petty and punitive. Also, in regards to the violation of women’s rights, the government is stepping in by already making a decision for women due to the fact that many will be unable to receive contraception, a service provided by the organization, which will result in an increase in pregnancies.
Many controversial debates concerning Planned Parenthood and an exceeding amount of government funding to the organization are occurring in today’s news. A recent case in particular that caught the eye of many who weren't yet aware of the deliberation was when President Trump decided to sign an executive order on January 23, 2017 concerning the defunding of Planned Parenthood (Richardson). Not only did he sign this policy surrounded by seven privileged white men, but he signed it two days after the largest peaceful protest in U.S. history: The Women’s March. This matter does not only concern women, but it concerns men and children as well. As an organization, Planned Parenthood provides affordable
Millions of taxpayer dollars are going to fund Planned Parenthood. With the introduction of Obamacare, Planned Parenthood has become a secondary cost to ensure women have health care throughout the United States. Along with the wasted money being spent on Planned Parenthood, other issues have been revealed about Planned Parenthood. The high cost of administration and the sale of fetus tissue and organs have become the latest in an agency out of control. Because of the wasteful administration of funds and ethical questions about disposing of fetuses, Planned Parenthood should no longer be funded by the Federal government.
Abortions only make up three percent of the procedures done at Planned Parenthood clinics (“2014 2015 Annual Report”). There are a variety of other life saving and essential health care procedures done at the clinics, such as STD and STI testing, pregnancy tests, contraception, exams, and other health issues relating to both men and women. Many people believe that the federal government should defund planned parenthood; however, this would make it almost impossible for many low-income individuals to receive the care that they need. The federal government should not defund Planned Parenthood (PP) because abortion is not a valid reason for opposing funding because it is allowed by law, low-income individuals and families need the affordable

In Texas (Texas being the first state in America to cancel Medicaid funding), Governor Abbot recently informed Planned Parenthood that the state is cutting off the organization from the state’s Medicaid program stated by Andy Sullivan in the article “Texas Tries To Stitch a Safety Net without Planned Parenthood”, as recently released undercover videos show evidence of violations. Another huge thing they have been under fire for is whether or not they are making a profit off of abortions, if they are making a profit off of abortions the government strongly
Congress is the only branch of government that can "make laws". (Lenz,2013) Though Congress is part of the law making process they are not the ones who actually "make the law" but oversees the law or passes it. With that being said the law is not a law when it begins it is first a sponsored Bill. The Bill that was sponsored by Senator Roger Wicker on the 17th of March, 2015 is the Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015 which was introduced to Senate.(Congress.gov, n.d.) This Bill states in Section 3 that it will prohibit federal funds for a one-year period for any purpose to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. or any of its affiliates or clinics, unless they certify that the affiliates or clinics will not perform, and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs, an abortion during such period. The restriction will not apply to cases of rape or incest or where a physical condition endangers a woman's life unless an abortion is performed. The Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture must seek repayment if federal assistance received by Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. or any affiliate or clinic, if it violates the terms of the certification required by the Act. Section 4 reads Additional funding for community health centers is provided for the one-year period described above.(Congress.gov,2016) This is the first step of creating the law. The second step is it being assigned to a committee for consideration. The committee the Bill was assigned to the Senate- Committee on Commerce,
A recent problem in the United States is whether or not Planned Parenthood facilities should still receive government funding. Majority of the United States government believes that the funding currently being used for Planned Parenthood should be used elsewhere, while some politicians and Americans believe that Planned Parenthood facilities are essential for affordable sexual health care. Planned Parenthood facilities are unnecessary establishments that should not receive any funding from the United States government.
Five years ago, we learned in Texas what can happen when efforts to defund Planned Parenthood are carried out. The network of health-care providers falls apart and women lose access to essential preventive services. Planned Parenthood is not something that, at first, was affecting Texas government. When Texas decided to focus on the fact that they preform abortions, basically, just ignoring the fact the government started by providing reproductive health care and still do. That’s when Planned Parenthood was forced to fight back, which started to affect Texas government because of their involvement. Years ago, Texas voluntarily gave up $30 million a year in federal funding for women’s health programs, just so it could exclude Planned Parenthood from the roster of approved
Millions of women across America will struggle to receive the medical attention they need if the federal government stops funding to Planned Parenthood. Every year 363 million dollars goes into the funding “pot” collectively at Planned Parenthood’s nationwide (Clark 5). This money is used predominantly by women; for six in ten women, Planned Parenthood acts as their main source of health care (Clark 4). Many individuals with low incomes depend on these clinics to maintain or help better their health. Recently, the federal government is trying to pass the Pence Amendment, which would eliminate funding to these institutions. The federal government needs to realize how important Planned Parenthood
There are always a number of heated debates within the United States. These debates are always a hot topic and very controversial issues. Due to how controversial they are, is why they become such largely debated topics with many people having very different views on the specific topic. For example, there is a Democratic and Republican party in the United States; people either stick with one side or the other due to their beliefs and sometimes can be neutral or on the other party’s side for certain topics. Abortion is a very controversial topic as it always has been all around the country but more specifically in the United States. There are two sides to the debate: those who believe abortion should be legal and their organization is
Healthcare has emerged as a primary topic of debate recently given the rhetoric of president Trump on “repealing and replacing” our current system. His ideal replacement, which he failed to pass through the senate, has a favorability rating of 16% according to Mark Murray of NBC news (4). The GOP health care bill is projected by many healthcare experts, including Noam M. Levey of the LA times, who implies that this bill will lead to a spike in the number of uninsured Americans; this proposition also includes tax cuts, along with progressive cuts (over time) to medicaid spending from the house and senate
