The Western Front, while the main focus of combat in WW1, many Australians ignore this part of the war, as they focus more on the Gallipoli campaign and its legend. However with the centenary of the First World War here, many people have begun to realise that Australia was involved in other theatres of the war, and not just Gallipoli. The focus of this essay will be on the Events leading up to Australia’s involvement, the weapons of the western front, life in the trenches, trench warfare, The Battle of Fromelles and the End of the war.

Whilst the conditions shown that were experienced by the Australian soldiers in the film was effective and broad, the conditions faced by the Japanese soldiers in Papua New Guinea was barely covered in the movie. Thus, indicating the limited use of this film as a historical source.

The First World War was the first war that Australian’s ever fought as a Federated nation. World War one was a time of great change for Australia. World War one had an enormous impact on Australian society and I will be support this argument by looking at how the loss of troops meant that more men had to be enlisted to fight and how the role of women changed during the war. I will also be examining the use of propaganda used to influence the civilian population. World War I had a significant and lasting impact on Australian society.

In the film, the soldiers fought very hard. They went through a lot in this war. They had to defend themselves and their territory. Often times they ran low on food and water. A ton of men died everyday when they were fighting. The soldiers had to deal with orders that were not necessarily smart orders. They had to protect themselves against Germany.

The Great War was known as ‘the war to end all wars’ as it had such a dramatic and tragic impact on soldiers and civilians alike. Many aspects of the conscription debate, the home front, trench warfare and weaponry had a significant impact on Australia and its involvement in the war.

Another wartime control that had a higher degree of impact on Australians in World War Two than in World War One was the detainment and isolation of ‘enemy aliens’ when the government again took steps to protect their national security. With such a large number of servicemen deployed overseas, the role of women in Australia also changed drastically to meet the needs of the armed forces, the government and the economy and this influenced Australian life more in World War Two. Therefore, although both wars affected the lives of many Australians in mental, physical, social and economic aspects, the wartime controls of World War Two had a much greater impact on Australians than in World War One.

World War 1 has been a famous war throughout history. Many films have been made surrounding it, sometimes realistic and sometimes not so much. Paths of Glory and All Quiet on the Western Front were two such movies that depicted the Great War. Each movie is unique in their own sense and although no movie will completely convey the harsh reality of the war some movies are better than others. Depending on when and what year the war would have looked vastly different to different soldiers. Some would only know the reality of the trench while others would recognize “tanks” rolling over the ground which were impenetrable to normal gun fire. Which side of the war one was on would have also lead to different views, as in when one side is winning the other is losing, and when morale is up on one side normally morale is down on the other.

“Charlie Wilson’s War” directed by Mike Nicholas is based on a true story of the early 1980s. This politically themed movie was released in the year 2007. The main components of the movie are politics, stubborn politicians, national leaders, war, international policies, national security and most importantly, funds. The movie depicts how funds are gathered through which Afghanis people acquired the weapons and required training to fight against the Russians. It is a story of a liberal democrat, a beautiful socialite, and a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent, who made a pact to conquer the Russians in the Afghanistan. The main characters were played by Tom Hanks as a Congressperson Charlie Wilson, Julia Roberts as Texas socialite Joanne Herring and Philip Seymour Hoffman as CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos. All three of them played an extraordinary role in shaping the history of Afghanistan.

The three films we were assigned to watch this unit were different in so many ways; Mutiny on the Bounty recounted the 1789 rebellion against William Bligh aboard the HMAV Bounty, It Happened One Night told the somewhat cliche story of a wealthy woman falling for a white-collar reporter, and All Quiet on the Western Front illustrated the nature of World War 1 and its effects on those involved. Each film was not similar in plot to any other, yet each one falls on the list of the Greatest Films of All Time. I think the greatness of All Quiet on the Western Front lies in the fact that the story told a different kind of war story; instead of glorifying war and painting the characters out to be heroes, the audience was given a sad story where those

World War I was an earth-shattering event that changed the physical and political landscape for many years to come. The years leading up to World War I had been the epitome of humanism, faith in human’s ability to do good, and their inherent goodness had never been higher. However, the transition into late modernity had already begun to make this faith in humanity waiver. People began to doubt the innate inner reason of man. The transition to belief that man was inherently irrational was starkly on the rise. WWI did nothing but prove these thinkers correct. The sheer scale and senselessness of the war that was most definitely irrational proved to man that they were not inherently good. This had a number of effects on populations as a whole.

All Quiet on the Western Front is a film about a young German solider named Paul Baumer, who is fighting in World War I. The film follows Paul and his comrades through the horrors of the war.

In Christopher Nolans most recent film, Dunkirk, he tells the story of allied soldiers being evacuated from Belgium, after the Germans surrounded them, also know as Operation Dynamo. As a huge fan of Nolan already, I thought this movie was a masterpiece. This was his first movie based on a war, and he did a great job retelling the history. He used an approach that had the actors use very little talking, and relied on the music and visuals to tell the story.
