The lady or the tiger?
“Where is love there is hope, where is hope there is life.” (Allan Stratton) The short story the lady or the tiger by Frank Stockton is a love story which the language is like a puzzle. Even the author did not mention about the result, it is up to readers to judge about the result. The readers might end up this short story by a good romantic way or a sad love story. As a result the author hands over the decision to readers which empowers them decide the ending of the story[I realized that this is plagiarized from Enotes. Please don’t present other people’s words as your own.] and motivate their mind in order that they find out for themselves who they are by what decision they would make. A boy who lives in a village that when someone does a crime he would be punished by being put into an arena with two doors. Behind one door is a lady that should marry him and will have a happy life and behind another door is a tiger that will kills him. This boy fall in love with daughter of king when the king found out then he wanted to punish him. During the judgment the princess knew behind which door is the lady and behind which door is the tiger. Therefore she pointed towards the right door and the boy went through that door. So, now what is behind that door, the lady or the tiger ? It ends up with a puzzle that the readers solve. This short story is good for motivating our mind. It is
One of the main characters in “The Lady or The Tiger” by Frank Stockhorn, was the semi-barbaric princess. From beginning, the unnamed princess had ambiguity written all over her, and it was generously displayed near the end of the story. The end started with the young man asking the princess in a secretive manner about who was behind each door, either the lady who he would get married too, or the tiger, by which who would eat him, including which door he should choose. The princess points to the right and the prince believes his lover without hesitation. He opens the right and the story is cut off there , leaving the reader with the question, who was behind the door? At that moment, we learn about the princess’s dilemma ; “She had lost him,
Frank Stockton’s short story “ The Lady or the Tiger” is about how a “semi-barbaric king” punishes those who commit a crime by putting them in an arena. The accused must choose one out of two doors. He will either open one of the doors awaited by the beautiful bride who was searched all over the land to find the perfect fit for him. Or open the door that holds a vicious beast that is about to attack him and devour him in a split second. A handsome young man in this kingdom ends up on trial because he dared to love and win the king’s daughter’s heart. The princess having a “ soul as imperious and fervent as the king” ,knows which door holds the vicious beast and which holds the beautiful bride. There is supporting evidence that the
In this sometimes heartbreaking, inspiring novel, Rob Horton, a glum, twelve year old boy living his sad, lonely life with his dad, was wandering through the woods one misty Florida morning when he finds the most unexpected creature, a beautiful tiger. A real life glistening tiger, locked up in a cage. On the same outstanding day he meets a fierce girl named Sistine Bailey while in school. Together, with the tiger always in their hearts;guiding them and leading them to make choices, they go through heartaches, happiness and loneliness. Also, despite their opposites, they uncover the meaning of true friendship and learn that the most important things in life, can’t stay hidden forever. In my opinion, this book teaches an important lesson. I think the lesson taught in this novel is inspiring, and is something worth-while. I think this book teaches you that you can’t focus on your past, and you can’t keep the whole world locked up forever.
In the story “The Lady and the Tiger” by Frank R. Stockton, is about a King to finds out her daughter (The Princess) had a lover. He get furious and throws him into an arena were he has to choose one of two identical doors. One having a beautiful woman who he would get to marry on the spot, the other has a tiger that has not been freed for a couple days, if he chooses this door he will get eaten.
The point of view of the narrative provides the aura of a primeval story, with classic fairy tale elements incorporated. “The Lady, Or the Tiger?” starts out with third person omniscient, where the narrator knows all the thoughts and feelings of the characters, leading to a fairy tale quality. The lack
would have had an alternate ending. While the young man was reaching his hand to open the right door, he changed his mind. As his heart was tightened with the strong love of the princess, he thought that dying by the tiger would rather be better than betray his lover. So, he went right to the left door and opened it. A few minutes after, a beautiful, lovely lady came out. Then the young man knew that he was betrayed by his lover, the
“The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government.” In this quote, Thomas Jefferson talks about how the most important thing in society is the care of individuals. He says that a government should make an effort to look after their citizens and strive to give them happiness, not ruin. In the short story, “The Lady, or the Tiger,” if a “criminal” is on trial, the king would have them stand in an arena and choose between two identical doors to open. Behind one door, there stands a beautiful maiden whom he could marry, whereas behind the second, there would be a hungry tiger waiting to maul and devour him.
The term epiphany is pretty common in literary terms, and most often means a moment of realization or self discovery. In a story, it’s when a character discovers an awareness or knowledge that really changes their views on life. They start to “see a new light” as some would say. In the story of “The Lady with the Dog,” there are four parts, and each of the four parts of the story involves an epiphany of some sort, one way or another.
In the story “The Lady or The Tiger” a princess is forced to watch her lover choose his destiny. The king is described as semi-barbaric because he shows compassion towards the accused. He allows them to choose their own fate by letting them pick a door, one with a hungry tiger and the other which contains a beautiful woman who he would marry on the spot. The man in the story finds himself in this situation after the king discovered he was having a love affair with his daughter. At the end of the story the princess is torn and she cannot decide if she should guide the man to life or watch him die.
Once there was a fair king named Liam. He was riding back from a trip on a cold harsh day when he noticed a girl being abandoned by her parents. The king thought, "since I don't have an heir to the throne, she could become it." Then Liam walked over and held out his hand to the girl and put her on his horse. Once Liam climbed on his mighty steed, the little girl told him her name was Athena and she was five years old. Then he rode back to his castle where his wife awaited him.
Without the slightest hesitation, he went to the door on the right, and opened it. Before the gate had even reached a foot off the ground the young lover, heartbroken, watched four frantic feet pacing back and forth and heard a deep, rhythmic panting. His mind frenziedly raced with dozens of thoughts: How could you do this to me? My dear lover, do you care but only for yourself? Someone must have forced her to tell me to choose the right door! What sort of fool am I to fall in love with the fairest lady in the kingdom?! What am I to do now? Run The tiger steadily stepped out of his dark cage, allowing the afternoon sun to warm his striped fur. He gazed first at the masses seated breathlessly around the stadium
A good relationship with a mother can be the one of the most rewarding blessings in life. Just like any relationship a human has, there will be moments in which the relationship can be dreadful, and moments when the relationship can be superb. However, the way in which people interpret the situation, resolve the issue, and above all try to make the relationship healthier, will determine how successful the relationship will be in the future. In the excerpt by Amy Chua Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom and the excerpt by Amy Tan The Joy luck club the authors explain how they are having an issue with their mother/daughter at a certain point in their life. These excerpts resemble the idea of a relationship not being in a state of tranquility, but
“The Lady, or The Tiger” by Mr. Frank R. Stockton has compelled readers for as long as time. This story ends with all wondering, so which is it, the delicate and fair young lady or the savage, fierce, wild-eyed tiger standing behind the door. This makes us ponder whether human heart chooses love or jealously. Within this essay, there will be proof that it is the stunning young woman behind the door. Although there is evidence proving that it is the tiger, in a sense there is more evidence stating that the elegant and barbaric princess allowed her real lover to continue living. To begin let us start with the small dwindling points that the tiger, lye behind the door.

At the end of the story, “The Lady or the Tiger,” the man had a choice to pick which door. The main question is which door did he pick? The one with the tiger that would lead to certain death or the door that had the lady behind it in which he would have gotten married to. I believe the princess lead him to opened the one with the tiger. Even though she would have had to watch her lover die a painful death I don’t think she could have bared to watch him be with another. One other reason it leads me to believe she picked that one is because she was semi-barbaric, like her father. It even said in the story that she enjoyed watching them as much as he did. The princess knew the game and knew that if she picked the one with the lady behind it they would be happily married.
