- When I was in eighth grade, towards the end of the year, I was bullied. It was unwarranted, or I would like to think it was as I was not one to stir up conflict. The bullies would throw things at me, and if they were sitting behind me, they would poke my back with pencils. At dismissal, they hid my book bag underneath one of the auditorium seats. The teacher aid became furious with me, for taking too long to dismiss. As well, as a bully would, they would also threaten to beat me up. The Eriksononian stage that would fit this scenario would be identity vs. role confusion. This stage pits identity against role confusion. A role which one can fit, identity, it is a personal self-evaluation that an adolescence goes through to refine the ego.
Adolescence is popularly known to be a very tumultuous stage in a person’s life. In the adolescent stage (also coined the identity vs. role confusion stage by theorist Erik Erikson) bodies are changing rapidly, emotions are unfamiliar and unexplainable, and refraining from succumbing to peer pressure is more challenging than ever.

For Erikson (1950) adolescence is a period during which individuals seek to avoid dangers of role diffusion and identity confusion by establishing a sense of personal identity. Individuals have to find answers for two major questions “who am I?” and “what is my place in society?” Identity is a “conscious sense of individual uniqueness” and an “unconscious striving for a continuity of experience” (Erikson, 1968, p. 208).
A theory proposed by Erik Erikson (1950, 1963) promotes the eight development stages of adolescents through adulthood by comparing the transitory periods. During each stage, the person experiences a psychosocial crisis which could have a positive or negative outcome for identity and personality development. The first stage is trust vs. mistrust, this stage starts at birth and end at the age of one year. This stage also explains the safety that the infant is getting from the caregiver. For example, if the infant receives constant care, they will develop a sense of trust which will be carried out with them to other and future relationships. The second stage is autonomy vs. shame and doubt; this stage occurs at the age of two to three years old. In this stage, the child is mainly discovering their skills and abilities. Identity development is intrinsically linked with adolescence because, according to John Santrock author of the book entitled Adolescence 15th edition, "...for the first time, physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development advance to the point at which the individual can sort through and synthesize childhood identities and identifications to construct a viable path toward adult maturity.” We often see the results of this sorting process in behaviors of adolescents such as adopting and shedding different personas, including speech patterns, clothing styles and peer groups. It outlines the struggle an individual faces in finding stability between developing a sense of forming a unique identity while still being accepted and “fitting in” with society. Erikson believed that when teenagers adequately navigated their way through this crisis, they would transpire into having a clear understanding of their individual identity and easily share this new ‘self’ with others. However, if an individual is unable to navigate their way through this crisis period, they may be uncertain of who they are which can result in a lack of understanding, leading to disconnection from society and the people around them. If youth become stuck at this stage they will be unable to become emotionally mature adults, according to Erikson’s theory. This period of an individual’s life allows them to investigate possibilities which will lead them to discovering their own identity based upon the result of their explorations.
Erikson’s stage of Identity vs. Role Confusion (13-19 years old), was a crucial time for my brother and I, as my parents decided to put us back in public school. I was thirteen-years old at the time, just entering the eighth grade as a “new kid” in a very small rural community. This was beyond some of my toughest

An impending identity crisis is another contributing factor in Holden 's breakdown. According to Plotnik, "Identity refers to how we describe ourselves and includes our values, goals, traits, interests and motivations" (394). Erik Erikson theorized about identity by way of "eight developmental periods during which an individual 's primary goal is to satisfy desires associated with social needs" (Plotnik 393). I will reflect on two personal milestones from my development, being Erikson’s Stage four ‘Industry vs Inferiority’ (six to eleven) and Stage five ‘Identity vs Role Confusion’ (roughly twelve to twenty). The latter will be examined in terms of whether I achieved Identity achievement or foreclosure. The two stages will be analysed based on written and oral recollections provided to Dr Anderson, Dr McMurdo and numerous family members between 2000 and 2003. Reference will be made to the bio-psycho-social, political and cultural influences prevalent on the Northern Beaches in the 1960s and later Upper North Shore of Sydney in the 1970s. Having observed many adolescents, I can apply Erikson's model of psychosocial development and gain understanding of the context and variable impacting the individual's psychology and overall health. It can be especially helpful to compare and contrast two adolescents, one who is addressing the conflict via strong and healthy coping mechanisms that ensure identity development and ego formation; and another who struggles to maintain or create a personal identity in the midst of the adolescent development stage.
