A hero can be from the past, from the present, from life, and from literature. The word ‘’hero’’ has many connotations and synonyms as well. However, not everyone gets enough credit for their heroic acts. Throughout unit 1 in springboard it discusses some of the heroic acts that certain characters did. For instance, in the story of the soldier that lost a leg, or the story of one of our presidents and how he became someone that people could look up to. In the story of “The drummer boy of Shiloh ‘’ the hero is a fourteen-year-old. A hero needs to have certain characteristics. For example, they need to be responsible and stay strong throughout their journey. Think about how hard it would be to live life without one of your leg, that would bring many conflicts in your life and only a hero could survive such a big change. That was the case with Tristan Eugen Segers, a soldier whom lost his leg in Afghanistan. In “Soldier home after losing his leg AFGHANISTAN” it states ‘’ Segers wears shorts in the warm summer weather, not even pretending to hide his prosthetic leg. He has run a marathon ‘’ (Gale Fiege 59). He lost his leg, yet he still manages to do activities without being embarrassed of his prosthetic leg. However even without his leg he still wants to keep a normal life without anything getting in his way, also now he has a child on its way. Therefore, he needs to stay strong to support his wife and son. According to the author he states “Most of the time when people see my
Boom!! A loud noise struck out of nowhere. I think these are the sounds of war. I don’t know what to do this reminds me of The Battle of Shiloh that I have to fight in at such an early age. This is about a boy named Joby in the story The drummer Boy of Shiloh by Ray Bradbury. Joby is a young boy about to go and fight in the battle of shiloh and he is very afraid of what may happen to him and one night him and a general had a talk because the general heard Joby crying.
A hero is somebody who commits an act of remarkably bravery or who has shown an admirable quality such as great courage or strength of character. (Encarta, 2009) Joseph Campbell has come up with eight of his own characteristics of a hero. Joseph Campbell is known as a scholar of mythology. There are several people in our times that are considered a hero. Whether, these heroes are fictional or nonfiction, they all portray some kind of heroic abilities.
What does it take to be a hero? When someone mentions a hero I think of a strong, good leader that knows how to keep a team together. He/She must be skillful and brave in order to follow through with their ‘quest’, they must be willing to put their lives at risk in order to do the good thing they are trying to accomplish. In the movie The Odyssey, our hero Odysseus is faced with many challenges, he is described as a man skillful in all ways, on his journey he does not lose courage and keeps his men under control. In the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? Everett Ulysses McGill he is our hero, he is the leader of 3 fugitives and goes through many challenges also to carry out his quest.
Do you love historical fictions? The Drummer Boy of Shiloh is the perfect story for you. The Drummer Boy of Shiloh is a story about this young, fourteen year old boy who is participating in the war as a drummer boy and is feeling doubts about the whole thing. In this story, the author, Ray Bradbury uses symbolism throughout to create vivid imagery and deep thought into each page.
What is a hero? A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. In the novel October Sky by Homer Hickam, a teenager named Homer “Sonny” Hickam grew up in a coal town in West Virginia where a boy’s usual fate was to end up in the mines. Although his mine-foreman father contemplated him in dismay, Homer still had his eyes on the sky and a love for flying rockets. Throughout the course of the story Homer proves to be heroic by remaining devoted to building the rockets, disregarding his father’s approval and facing the challenge of his stolen belongings.
Exasperating can describe the way siblings fight. They both have a different side of the story and different information from the situation. The constant back and forth of who is right. Not to mention, some kind of justification or maybe a different approach is happens a lot between siblings. The same way siblings may fight connects to the topic of learning history through literature compared to informational text. The way two authors may write or how they see something is just one way informational text and literature text can be different. In the fictional story “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” by Ray Bradbury, Joby an young 14 year old drummer boy is a run away. Also in the informational text, “Battle of
Imagine bullets flying bye your ear. "The Finish of Patsy Barnes" and " The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" are both good stories. Joby is a better character than Patsy because he is in a life threatening situation. Patsy won't get shot or killed like Joby, she will just fall of a horse and might get hurt . Joby ran away from home and stayed strong he could of died during the war so he is brave. The only thing that will really happen to Patsy is she can't race.
A hero is a person who believes that their enemy is not inherently malevolent, but also has wit and bravery. Benjamin Church is that hero, he was an Englishman who went from leading a small group of men to leading an army. Church was brave, when he gets hurt he risks his life for the sake of the mission. After a little while he returned to battle for the sake of the army even though he was not fully recovered, and when he left war to be with his family he went back. Church also had compassion, when an Englishmen enslaved or killed an innocent Indian he would get mad because he believes that not all Indians are malevolent. Thirdly Church had wit, his ideas of building an army is what won the war for Plymouth and saved key alliances for building
Heroes are selfless and put others before themselves in dangerous situations. Such as on 9/11, when a call was given out for boats to come rescue people off the island of Manhattan, where the terror attacks happened, as pictured in “Boatlift” Vincent Ardillo after hearing the news told his wife, “I gotta do something.” This represents heroism because Ardillo is not thinking of how he will be impacted, but rather of the people who need help, as many other people with access to a boat did as well. Also, Ardillo could have stayed home and been safe, but chose to sacrifice his well being and comfort for others. Another hero would be Clara Barton, the founder of the Red Cross, as Barton declared in a Civil War speech “I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them.” Barton distinguishes she could be hurt while helping the soldiers, however she does not dwell on the fact, deciding instead to carry on and make a difference despite the threat to health. This is heroic because Barton is putting others who cannot care for themselves and acknowledges she could be hurt, but does not let that get in the way of her reaching her goals. To sum up, heroes are everyday people who go out of their way to help others in need without the thought of payment.
A hero can be viewed differently in many eyes. Author and lecturer Joseph Campbell, has correlated a hero as usually being a male, often of lowly birth, but with special powers or a higher birthright, the hero doesn’t know about. Also, the hero parents are often dead, absent, or uncaring, and the hero is judged by the actions he takes and the way he reacts and relates to people. In the opinions of others, a hero is also a person admired for bravery, great achievements, abilities or good qualities and is regarded as a role model. A hero is also, admired for having done something very courageous or having succeeded in something great. In literature, the hero is the main character of a story, play, or movie. In the textbook, The Norton Anthology
What comes to mind when you think of the word “hero”? Some people would think of a fictional character such as Superman, a comic-book character who has great strength, and can fly. Others might think of a historical figure, such as Abraham Lincoln, 16th president of the United States. While the aforementioned examples are not only noteworthy, but also well-liked for their courageous characteristics, there are many other qualities to being a hero.
To me a hero is someone who can overcome trials and tribulations. A hero is brave enough to face the world and help others in a time of need. Langston Hughes is a good example of a hero because he helped his community and other young people in the world.
When I was 14 years old I toured my first Military Institute at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. I witness first hand American Troops returning from Desert Storm with numerous life threatening injuries sustained during combat. Troops who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our country 's freedom. I recall asking myself “What is a hero? And what it symbolizes in our modern world?” and “What does a hero look like?”, my vision of a hero as a kid included a cartoon character with superpowers wearing a cape, Instead as I stared at a young Army Sergeant, burned beyond recognition sitting on wheelchair, unable to walk as he lost both limbs while in combat, That is when I recall asking myself again, “What is a hero?” The term hero comes from the Ancient Greeks, for them a man of great strength and courage favored by the gods and in part descended from them, often regarded as a demigod and worshiped after his death. Despite decades of envisioning a hero as a cartoon figure such as Batman, Superman and Spiderman, my heroes wear desert camouflage BDU’s. Although in the vision of some, a hero may be inspiring weather it to be oneself or to others, A hero is a person who saves lives. My vision of a hero intel 's of both qualities in addition to bravery and courage which may have been someone who saves lives or puts their own life on the line to save another, the definition of a hero may be different in someone else 's visions. Personal athlete or famous
‘Me,” thought the boy, “I got only a drum, two sticks to beat it, and no shield”.
