“When Worlds Collide” is a documentary about the old age and the New age coming together as one in Europe . This video talks about the good things that the new world had brought to the old world and the not so good things. This documentary also talks about the improvements that has happened in both worlds. In the old world, everyone was part of nature. They used organic products, built machines out of wood, and also developed things from nature. Now in the new world, we are destroying nature and using metal to make machines and releasing toxins in the air while doing so. We should go back to the old world’s age and save earth so that we can live healthier longer.
The world is in a constant state of change, today’s decisions will affect the future of all species large and small, defining the ways in which society will continue to live. The essay “No New Worlds” written by Dr. Adrian Forsyth explores ideas associated with ever changing populations and states of the world. The essay describes the existence of humankind by their impacts on the surrounding environments. The reader is then introduced to the implications our world faces if these problems are not solved and additionally steps to solving these issues. Thus, both men and women need to take action to help or pay the consequences and protect the only world we have, planet Earth.
Ever since the dawn of industrialization, humans have caused serious, irreversible damage to the biosphere. And as the world progresses and Canadians looks on, they realized the impact of their environmental damage. Sometimes new ecofriendly technology enters the market and replaces the old environment damaging one. But that is not enough, human society as a whole must completely rethink and change themselves individually to so that their actions causes minimal environmental backlash.
Shaded by trees and peacefully overlooking the Brisbane river, a five-metre bookend in the shape of an elephant stands, on its side, observed by the beady eyes of kuril. A bronze chair complements the life-sized, 3-piece work commissioned to artist Michael Parekowhai by the Queensland Government. The World Turns was designed for the anniversary of the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), and Parekowhai was one of three shortlisted artists considered for a piece that was to enhance Queensland's national and international profile and become an emblem for the Australian gallery. Chairman of the sculpture commission Selection Committee Tony Ellwood praised the bronze-casted sculpture for its "responsiveness" towards the cultural significance of Kurilpa
A Short History of Progress Written by Mister Ronald Wright, talks about the progress and the issues of having too much change occur to a civilization, and how it can affect the outcome results of a healthy progressing community. He mentioned the ups and downs that occurred to some civilizations and how some triumphed while others did not. Which leads to the main dilemma Wright argues about, which is the current destruction of the environment around us. Over exploiting nature, over expanding, and overpopulating are problems that past societies have come across and is now occurring in our time. These things are what helped societies prosper during certain moments in history but they are now causing problems because we as people are abusing the
The beginning of chapter 2 is titled “ When worlds Collide” because in that chapter it talks about the native americans and Europeans meeting each other in the new world. There were 3 main European countries that interacted with the natives, the Spanish, English, and French. Each had their reasons for making the long treck to the new World.
The Hearing World Sound and Fury is a documentary film following the extended Artinian family living in New York. This family examines the conflict with technological advances for deaf culture when Heather Artinian, daughter of Peter and Nita Artinian, expresses her desire to get a cochlear implant. The Artinian family is a mixture of both the hearing world and the deaf world. Her grandparents, her aunt, and her uncle belong to the hearing world while her parents and siblings belong to the deaf world. The cochlear implant may improve her ability to hear and communicate, but her parents believe she will be replacing her own identity: deafness.
The documentary, The Good Fight, captures the many struggles and sacrifices James Farmer faced during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Through first hand accounts, pictures, and documents, this film brings James Farmer to life portraying him as a selfless, committed, and collaborative leader dedicated to the movement. James Farmer experienced segregation from a young age and knew at that point that he must actively do something to put an end to it. He strongly believed in changing something that is wrong rather than just passively accommodating to the world.
This week’s Core Friday was not a lecture, but a documentary named The Pluto Files, which was coordinated by one of Core’s co-coordinator, Tom Hothem. The purpose documentary was that Pluto lacked a well-defined criteria to determine if it was or was not a planet. The documentary followed Neil Tyson as he traveled to different states in finding out the truth and views about Pluto being a planet and not a planet. There were many controversies about this topic when it was concluded that Pluto would no longer be considered a planet. This issue relates to how we must evaluate the Drake Equation in the Quantitative Essay. It connects because both lack a well-defined criteria that allow us to determine what is and what is not. It makes us question
Why We Fight released to the viewing public in 2005. One of several documentaries by director Eugene Jarecki. Narrator Walter Huston did not uniquely stand out from the cast yet held a neutral position. Music selection on the other hand, stood out boldly from the plot. As the issues of war and freedom intensified so did the music. If people mourned the deaths of others soft spoken emotional music evoked feeling. The film adds to the propaganda exampled by the subject matter. Fluency of the film immediately stood out to me. Jarecki’s attention to detail, diverse mediums, and personal opinion as well as entertainment of the viewer were well taken care of in this film with the exception of fluency. The film’s purpose is to question the viewer about the preemptive community of the American
Lynn White Jr. is a medieval historian. He talks about how the western world change how we treat the environment, especially by western religion. White starts by giving the history of technology around the world, for example, the clock. He also talks about the different people who were involved with helping technology growing into what we know now. He goes into his subject of Medieval and it View of Man and Nature. He explain, “This, distribution of land was based no longer on the needs of a family but, rather, on the capacity of a power machine to till the earth. "Man's relation to the soil was profoundly changed. Formerly man had been part of nature; now he was the exploiter of nature." Pg four because of technology men was no longer part of Nature anymore. White has also say that religions especially Christianity change how men think. He explains “ If so, then modern Western science was cast in a matrix of Christian theology.” pg 5 That Western Christian is how people will see the environment. White believed to solve this problem is to think of an alternative
In the film “When Worlds Collide”, the answer to the question “How did the American Indigenous populations impact Spain (and vice versa)?” was focused on the changes in wealth, class systems, and the Spanish conquistadors’ intentions. The first topic covered in the film is how today’s America and today’s world are heavily influenced by the culture, heritage, and history of the Mestizo race and their Spanish counterparts. The video then explains that the Mestizo race came into existence after the Spaniards had children with the Natives of the “New World”.
After watching this film, I learned to never judge or discriminate others because of the color of their skin or because of their appearance. The Documentary entitled A Class Divided surprised and helped me understand how other races feel when they are being discriminated. It also displayed the different attitude the kids portrayed due to power. It also showed me we have to implement change to our young kids at an early age. We should continue to educate everyone that all should be treated equally no matter what their appearance appears to be. The scene I would remember a month from now from this film is the different body language each kid displayed, how confused they were. The behavior that each child shown. Some felt left out; some felt like
Another example of culture affecting one’s view appears in the essay “Where Worlds Collide” by Pico Iyer. In the story, Korean immigrants come to America for the first time, experiencing the hustle of the Los Angeles International Airport. The immigrants arrive at the airport “...in Dodgers caps and Rodeo Drive T-shirts, with the maps their cousins have drawn for them and the images they’ve brought over from Cops and Terminator 2…” Because they came from another country with a different culture, they do not know much about American cultures. Thus, they make assumptions based on what they have been told by their Korean peers and how they view Americans. The immigrants think that America is full of action. In addition, their Dodgers caps and
Throughout world history, people have come up with brilliant new ideas to make life easier, and as time goes on, research, making food, and getting news, has all become instantaneous. It now only takes the push of a button to cook a thanksgiving meal or the click of a remote to find out what’s happening across the world. These things are often taken for granted, and rarely does someone stop and say: “I wonder what turning on this extra lamp does to the environment?” This statement sounds insignificant when there are people starving in other countries and people are training for the army. Yet, being concerned about the environment is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, the environment should be one of the biggest concerns among people, as
White’s thesis in The Historical Roots of our Ecological Crisis states that in order to confront the expanding environmental crises, humans must begin to analyze and alter their treatment and attitudes towards nature. The slow destruction of the environment derives from the Western scientific and technological advancements made since the Medieval time period. “What people do about their ecology depends on what they think about themselves in relation to things around them” (RON p.7). Technology and science alone will not be able to save humans until we adjust the way of thinking and suppress the old ideas of humans power above nature. Instead, we need to learn how to think of ourselves as being
