Another example of how home language or race has impacted children and families is in a classroom that shows in group bias. In group bias towards the groups in which people are members (Patterson & Bigler, 2006). What could happen in an instance such as this is as the children become more aware of societal norms that favor certain groups over others, they will often show a bias toward the socially privileged group (Winkler, 2009). A study showed that children of color as young as five years old show evidence of being aware of, and negatively impact by sterotypes about their racial group (Hirschfeld, 2008). This is evident in a classroom where the children start taking on the bias role of the teacher. In a classroom, children are questioning the skin color of another child. Instead of the teacher stopping to talk about how we are all the same, just different colors, the teacher ignores it. This silence will force children to come up with their own biases, prejudices and assumptions about races other than their own.

Racial stereotypes more or less affect our perceptions toward race, and judge people in a certain frame unconsciously, as Omi set forth in In Living Color: Race and American Culture. It greatly impact the images of minorities on the visual media, which the most direct medium to reflect the popular beliefs. Even though the “racist beliefs” have “just recently being reversed”, the portrayal of minorities on visual media is still not exemplary (Horton, et al “PORTRAYAL OF MINORITIES IN THE FILM, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRIES”).

The internalized colorism expressed, not only through society, but through family members, better explained their oppositions the more I learned what African-Americans go through just because of the color of their skin. The killings within the black community (i.e. Eric Garner, Alton Sterling, and Trayvon Martin) is when the true understanding and frustration set in. My parents and my extended family has always made sure I knew my culture and that my race was different from other races such as Caucasian and Asian children I went to school with. I also always knew I related to a different race due to my family skin color versus the other people who were around whose skin color is different from mines. As a child when I was growing up I heard adults or older kids talk about issues such as different races and people they have interacted during the day. Another thing exposed to me as a kid was the different political issues especially George Bush administration and racism as general. In July 2009, at a TED conference, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a Nigerian author, gave a stunning speech about “the Danger of a Single Story”. In her speech, she mentioned about negative consequences happening when people tend to form stereotypes based on a single story, the one-sided argument. The single story blindfolds our eyes and prevents us from seeing the complexity, diversity, and similarities that construct our world, just as Adichie says “these negative stories is to flatten my experience and overlook the many other stories that formed me” (12:56). Listening to all her own personal experience and argument, I have become fully convinced and also see myself reflected in her stories. The single story can cause underlying and harmful impacts not only on personal issues but also on the global scale.

Through radio, through television, through the internet, through music, through books, and many alike, the real potential for stereo types to arise are an inevitable possibility. Parents, willingly or not, expose and teach their children, subconsciously, by saying statements and/or watching programs that involve racism. From the TED Talk video “The Danger of a Single Story,” I think that the speaker Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wanted to tell us that we need to read more and know different stories about one place because there are more than one story exist. We should not judge other without knowing themselves. Furthermore, she said that we should not easily believe everything we heard from media because they only give us one impression. I especially felt close to her when she described how she felt after she realized her American roommate teetered her as African not Nigerian. When it comes to choice it always seems to be a love hate relationship: we hate making them, but we can’t live without them. Anyone can all look back to a time in our lives where they wish someone could just pick for us, or times when we wish there were more to choose from. All Americans have many choices, and it is such a part of our daily lives that we don’t even realize it. Barry Schwartz and Sheena Iyengar‘s TED talks bring up interesting ideas about choice, how people deal with them and their affects. They both state that although choice is good, it can also have negative effects. Chimamanda’s Ted Talk focused on how dangerous and powerful a single story is. By focusing on one viewpoint upon various subjects, other stories are ignored. She mentioned how her mother only told her about their house boy coming from a poor family so her viewpoint of that houseboy was based on poverty and nothing else. She was unable to see that he may have had skills, and that people in poverty stricken areas generally do have some form of skills, however little attention is given to them nor do they normally have resources that can help sharpen/put a spotlight on them. Politically this relates to historically repressed facts and mis-told/whitewashed history of various countries formation stories, and their people. Particularly following the legacy of colonization and racism/colorism, stereotypes have held power with negative repercussions for some and privileges for others across the world. Such as how mainstream society constantly paints Whites as heroes, God’s chosen people, innocence and the most intellectual race out of all humans. As being darker serves as their opposite and in a negative way, which helps to reinforce white supremacy narratives because white supremacy wouldn’t exist if a need for black to be negative wasn’t created. Blacks are painted as slaves, lazy, inferior, weak, and individuals with something inherently wrong psychologically. Today the media promotes such bias viewpoints of Blacks with the focus on/the phrase “black on black crime” in America,

Over time, we have developed more and more advanced technology from radios to robots, this has impacted us in a way no one would imagine. In Sherry Turkle’s Ted Talk “Connected, but alone?,” Turkle clarifies how technology is redefining human connection. She points out that our cellphones are keeping us away from interacting with society and has a more significant influence on our communication in person than online. In addition, we tend to seek social media as a way of comfort and attention, and the more we are using our phones the more isolated and alone we become. Is technology really redefining human connection?

The one obvious negative effect of the perceptions that we know little about paves the way for stereotypes , ethnocentrism and Prejudice . Stereotypes are the oversimplified ideas about a group of people , Ethnocentrism is the evaluation of other cultures according to preconceptions originating in the standards and customs of one's own culture , Prejudice is thoughts and feelings about those discriminated groups . Because all obvious things that we hear about include stigmas like “ All Asians are smart , and all blacks are criminals “ . It is sad that all of these invalidated myths have become common currently because they are seen as the self-evident and the obvious .
