In May of 1856 Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts delivered a speech called “The Crime Against Kansas” which involved murderous robbers. Two days after his speech Preston Brooks felt his family was dishonored by the speech so to get the honor back he visited Sumber and beat him senseless with a cane. Although there is never a good time for something like that to happen, it was terrible at that moment because the county was still battling the issue of slavery and this did not help it..
In chapters six through ten of The Collapse of American Criminal Justice, Stuntz talks about the changes that were being made in the criminal justice system, and the changes that can help fix the system. He goes in details when it comes changes in the system, from the courts putting limits on what the criminal procedure, for example, the “exclusionary rule”. Also the mention of the rise and fall of crime across the United States. Lastly, mentioning the famous landmark cases that helped sparked these changes.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was one instance in which Congress failed to compromise as a nation, which divided the North and South more.The Kansas-Nebraska Act entitled each territory to have the opportunity to decide the imposition of slavery on their land, based on popular sovereignty. Stephen A. Douglas, a Illinois senator established the act. Douglas’ intentions for the act were to ultimately see Nebraska made into a territory, along with the desire for Kansas, an inclined state, to support slavery to hopefully in result, gain full southern support. The Kansas-Nebraska act undid the Missouri Compromise, which ultimately prevented the Union from corrupting. With the violation of the Missouri Compromise, the act took law, enraging the North.
Bleeding Kansas-During the settling of the Kansas territory the period of violence between anti-slavery settlers and pro slavery settlers was called “Bleeding Kansas”. John Brown was the leader of the anti-slavery party and he would kill people for the cause such as his planned raid on Harpers Ferry. He was one of the first non-African Americans to put his life on line for the cause of removing slavery
As a result of more free soilers in Kansas, 800 border ruffians went into the free town of Lawrence Kansas and destructed the place with cannons. Meanwhile, Senator Charles Sumner of Washington D.C. insulted the Southerners including Senator Butler of South Carolina, while speaking in Congress. Correspondingly, Preston Brooks, Butler’s cousin, injured Sumner very badly, openly in the Senate, almost killing him (Hakim 179). Furthermore, the fierce abolitionist John Brown wanted to take revenge for what happened in Lawrence and to Sumner. He ended up kidnapping and killing innocent pro-slavery settlers who weren’t involved in these events, leading to Kansas being known as “Bleeding
On May 19, 1856, Charles Sumner of Massachusetts rose to speak in the Old Senate Chamber. Sumner was an antislavery Republican who intended to address whether Kansas should be admitted to the Union as a slave state or a free state. Sumner carefully wrote a 112 page long address. He memorized every word of the address "The Crime Against Kansas."
Texas had always had a long standing history of being traditional and conservative; their strong ties to tradition and pride in history has caused them to remain steadfast in some of their practices regardless of the world around them. Texas is amongst the few states in the U.S. that still actively participates in capital punishment. Once all information is reported from different police department, the Federal Bureau of Investigations breaks down all the collected data into charts. The Uniform Crime Report is statistical information gathered from different police agencies throughout the United States.
Crime rates have several different factors that can affect them. There are things like population, geography, customs, and laws that can manipulate a crime rate to change substantially. Therefore, is it so important to not only look at the crime rates for the United States as a whole, but also by individual states as well, because not only are there differences between our national level of crime and an individual states, but there are also differences between the crime rates in different states as well.
Kansas has many state parks and the popular place is the monument rocks and the castle rocks. The monument rocks and the castle rocks have fossils in ancient chalks in plain western Kansas which is a spectacular landmark. The chalk was deposited during the Cretaceous period of geological history about 80 million years ago, when the central interior was covered by sea. The fossils were like shark teeth, fish bones, even dinosaur bones, and other sea creatures. The fossils in the chalk bed go to the Sternberg Museum in Hays.Michael J. Recent surveys have indicated that crime rate in the United States is on the rise. Crime in the U.S. is classified into property crime and violent crime. These criminal activities have a considerable impact on a state’s social and economic growth and development. Different states in the U.S. have developed different strategies to combat crime, which continues to transform in form and frequency. A number of policies, options, and approaches to crime control exist. This report explores some of the policies, options, and approaches that could be used by Florida to enhance crime control.
State Crimes are defined as “acts that are largely committed, instigated or condoned by governments and their officials” (International State Crime initiative). These crimes are considered to be very serious crimes in society today, due to the fact that they are either committed or condoned by governmental personnel with the aim of achieving certain goals. Having said that, scholars today do not have the knowledge of how important these crimes are since it violate international and criminal law within that state. Eugene McLaughlin identified four categories of state crime; Political crimes, crimes by security, economic crimes and social and cultural crimes. However, I will focus on the two that are more widely acknowledged Political crime is corruption and censorship, a state has the right to label a behaviour as political crime if it’s seen as a threat to the state. Crime by security has to do with genocide and torture, a great example of crime by security is the Rwanda Genocide that occurred in 1994 which ended up killing 800,000 citizens in just a few weeks.
