CHAPTER FIVE Beast from Water
The tide was coming in and there was only a narrow strip of firm beach between the water and the white, stumbling stuff near the palm terrace. Ralph chose the firm strip as a path because he needed to think, and only here could he allow his feet to move without having to watch them. Suddenly, pacing by the water, he was overcome with astonishment. He found himself understanding the wearisomeness of this life, where every path was an improvisation and a considerable part of one 's waking life was spent watching one 's feet. He stopped, facing the strip; and remembering that first enthusiastic exploration as though it were part of a brighter childhood, he smiled jeeringly. He turned then and walked back toward the platform with the sun in his face. The time had come for the assembly and as he walked into the concealing splendors of the sunlight he went carefully over the points of his speech. There must be no mistake about this assembly, no chasing imaginary. . . . He lost himself in a maze of thoughts that were rendered vague by his lack of words to express them. Frowning, he tried again. This meeting must not be fun, but business. At that he walked faster, aware all at once of urgency and the declining sun and a little wind created by his speed that breathed about his face. This wind pressed his grey shirt against his chest so that he noticed--in this new mood of comprehension--how the folds were stiff like cardboard, and unpleasant;
A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park highlights the life of a boy from Sudan that is forced to leave his country as a refugee. Salva Dut, 11, was living in South Sudan when the civil war came to his village. He was forced into the bush, leaving his family and all he knew behind him. He met up with local village members and walked East, not sure where he was headed, just knowing that he was away from his family. On the journey, he became friends with a kid named Marial and he also found his uncle Jewiir. Unfortunately, on this difficult journey, Marial was eaten by a lion in the middle of the night. Salva and the others kept walking East on their way to a refugee camp. They had to cross the Nile River in handmade boats and the Akobo
There is nothing worse seeing your child go through a wrong situation and trying to save them or losing a kid when you haven’t see there eyes open even worse having a dead body over your hands. In the “Children of the Sea” parents rick there life for their kids. Through her portrayal of Papa, Madan Rodger, and Celianne, Edwidge Danticat shows in “Children of the Sea” that parents will sacrifice anything for their children.
When people are surrounded by violence, their identities are consumed by it, and it can be hard to separate the person and the actions. In the book, “Monster” we view a story about a black kid, Steve Harmon, who is being convicted of a crime he says he did not commit, the felony murder of Aguinaldo Nesbitt. Steve sits and waits in his cell as he awaits the decision of the jury, a jury of his peers, if he is or is not guilty. At the end of the book, two defense lawyers and a prosecutor, O’Brien, Briggs, and Petrocelli, use Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to convince and appeal to the jury’s sense of credibility, emotions, and logic to persuade them to vote guilty or not guilty. All 3 lawyers are given the same exact evidence, and the same rhetorical
The criminal justice system is well talked about throughout communities, law officials, and etc. Through social media we hear about the criminals who go into prison and the prisoners who return to prison, but never about the ones who change or learn their lesson from it. It is believed that once someone has been arrested and sent to prison or jail, it is likely that they will return to their again at some point in their lifetime. We believe this because we think these criminals were made this way and don’t have the ability to change. The memoir, Dreams from the Monster Factory, written by Sunny Schwartz and David Boodell, talks about the life inside a prison and jail and how Sunny’s RSVP program gives prisoners the ability to change their life around. Dreams from the Monster Factory was Sunny’s experience about what she saw working behind bars. She directed her book towards the public and other jails around her to try to bring awareness about how the RSVP program came and helped out more prisoners to become less violent. Sunny proved this by giving personal stories from real prisoners, how the RSVP program came to help them. This essay is directed towards anyone who hasn’t read this book. In the memoir, Dreams from the Monster Factory, Sunny Schwartz and David Boodell use rhetorical appeals, such as ethos, pathos, and logos, to show her audience that by implanting the RSVP program
The life as a coast guard living in a lighthouse on a desolate coast, seems simple and easy, maybe even taskless, but for a man with a troubled mind, and an incurable fixation, existence seems like an unavoidable entropy. He gazed into the divided scene in front of him, the horizon splitting the
I think that the reason why Lauren Tarshis put quotes in the article “Into the Dark Water was so the quotes can help people who read it feel as if they’re actually in the story or as if they actually feel the same feeling as riding on the Titanic. Jack Thayer a 17 year old boy who did ride on the titanic gave me the feeling by saying “It was the kind of night to be alive”. That makes me feel like the titanic really is a luxurious ship to be on. Another example would be when Jack said “ A continuous wailing chant of fear and pain and desperation,” I felt as if I myself was inside the frigid water wailing and chanting because of my pain and sorrows.
Monster by Sanyika Shakur yields a firsthand insight on gang warfare, prison, and redemption. “There are no gang experts except participants (xiii)” says Kody Scott aka. Monster. Monster vicariously explains the roots of the epidemic of South Central Los Angeles between the Crips and the Bloods that the world eventually witnessed on April 29, 1992. As readers we learn to not necessarily give gangs grace but do achieve a better understanding of their disposition to their distinct perception in life.
As much as humans don’t want to admit it, the world wasn’t solely created for us. The novel, Ishmael, written by Daniel Quinn has given us an insight on how the world has been treated by man and how it could end. In a time where the world is being destroyed we need to step up and protect the earth from total destruction.
Imagine walking through Africa. It is hot and there is limited food and water. The sun's beating down onto your face and your legs want to give up. In Salvas time period there is war in Sudan and Salva gets caught in the middle of it. Nyas village needs more clean water to survive. Towards the end of the book Salva can not find a suitable refugee camp to live at. Nya and Salva overcome obstacles in A Long Walk to Water.
As human beings everyone suffers but we all suffer differently. Some suffer emotionally, some suffer physically, some suffer mentally. And through suffering and pain we gain different experiences, we either overcome pain and sorrows or we break down waste our lives. Edwidge Danticat present the theme of suffering in each of her stories. In all the stories the characters have to go through pain, but they all over come it in different ways. This is true in real life too. in the children of the sea that characters suffer but the outcome is that, in 1937 the outcome is inner peace, and My outcome is discovering myself.
After a retired mobster fakes his death to hide from the mob, he attempts to reconcile with his estranged soccer-mom daughter and grandson, by taking charge of the annual PTA fundraiser.
Jack London’s novel, The Sea-Wolf, has many different interpretations. The story can be read as a combination of the naturalistic novel and the sentimental romance, both very popular around the turn of the century. London also brings into play literary naturalism, in which human beings are characterized as just another species in nature, subject to all of Her cosmic forces. The Sea-Wolf fits almost perfectly the archetypal pattern of an initiation story. Depth and interest are added to The Sea-Wolf by successfully integrating these three elements -- the combination of two popular genres, literary naturalism, and the initiation story.
New Atlantis is the story of a navigator and his crew aiming to go to China, but an unprecedented blast of winds redirects their course. As they are blown off course, they soon come across an island that has never been charted on their maps before. The island is known as Bensalem. As they arrive close to the port, they received a scroll written in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and Spanish. The scroll had told them that they had only sixteen days to stay on the port. The crew could also receive some supplies from the island as well. First, the man asks if the people on the ship are Christian. The crew says yes, and then the man asks about the sick people on the ship. The captain says there are a quite a bunch of sick people on the ship. The health advisor seemed to immediately know it was scurvy, since soon he brought an orange- scarlet type of fruit to the crew for them to eat. This insinuates that the people on this island are more advanced in the medical field, which means that they have made more scientific progress than the other nations of the time. Thereafter, the crew makes an oath to not disturb the peace of the island, meaning they wont steal or attack anyone or anything. As soon as they settle that, six people from the crew including the captain are given permission to go into the mainland. Of course, the sick stay on the ship in order to get better. The men are told that they are to go into a place called the Stranger’s house. When they arrive, they are told to stay
He glanced out of the window, watching the sky turning from a deep blue shade to a clear, blue, breezy morning. ‘A good day.’ He made a mental note to himself. The sun baked through the curtains, sharpening his enormous shadow. He thought of that fussy factory owner and sighed.
Knowing where we come from plays a significant role in our lives. Having knowledge of and knowing where we come from shapes who we grow to be as people. Of course, where you come from does not define who you are as a person. For example; a person who comes from poverty and harsh treatment should not be expected to forever live in poverty or treat people harshly later in their life. Rick Riordan uses many different scenes and plots in Sea of Monsters to prove these ideals to be true
