The motion picture, The Birth of a Nation, produced and directed by D. W. Griffith and released March 21, 1915. D. W. Griffith and Frank E. Woods, co-wrote the screenplay, which they adapted for the screen from the novel and play The Clansman: An Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan by Thomas Jr. Dixon. The movie based on the book began with two families the Stoneman and the Cameron; however, as they grow up the struggles between the north and south became harder to overcome. As the love story unwraps the introduction of the Ku Klux Klan began and the way the communities’ embracement of the clan was remarkable. A few of the cast members are Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, and Henry B. Walthall. Actor Lillian Gish, played the part of Elsie daughter of Stoneman, and there was also Mae Marsh, who acted as Flora Cameron the pet sister and Mister Henry B. Walthall who portrayed Colonel Ben Cameron. The Birth of a Nation regarded as Griffith's highly most influential and controversial film because of the racialism and what they believe is people equality represented. The film remains recognized by the National Film Preservation Board, USA 1992 and Online Film, and Television Association 2000.
The reconstruction is the period of time in American History from 1863 to 1877 when the eleven seceding states were readmitted to the Union. During this time President Lincoln had declined to sign the 1864 Wade-Davis Bill because he was not ready to pledge to any particular plan of restoration.
