Keli Goff is an internationally recognized journalist, political commentator, author, playwright and screen writer (Keli). She claims that for the Republicans to win the war on equal pay, they need “shut up and play their cards right on this issue” (Goff). Goff is extremely straight forward and brutally honest in this article on her stance on the gender wage gap. In her article Goff emphasizes that the Republicans are not acting wisely with the voting to block the Paycheck Fairness Act, she supports her claims with evidence by discrediting certain Republican figures and pointing out that there is a gender wage gap of the employees who work at the White House. Goff portrays rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos and ethos effectively. However, with her harsh tone she appears to be very bias at first but uses strategies with evidence to support her stance and opinions on Republican party and their choice to block the Paycheck Fairness Act. As long as an American woman is putting in the same amount of hours with the same qualifications and experience in the same occupation as an American male, and yet taking home a wage that is any lower, she is not being treated fairly as an equal. Contrary to many arguments, it’s undeniable that a wage gap exists, and while there are various ideas as to the most probable cause, there is no reason why this gap should continue to go uncorrected or unchanged. Our government should take concrete steps to close the gender wage gap because it violates women’s rights and equality.
Adjacently, Anita Little, an author for an American feminist magazine called Ms, wrote an article titled, “It’s Not a Myth- It’s Math”, explains that the gap is not fictitious and that government involvement and public policies can help close the gap. After years of Civil Rights Movements and Pay Equity Acts, as of 2014, women still only make 79 cents to a man 's every dollar. Although the wage gap has shrunk since the 1970’s, progress has recently stalled and chances of it vanishing on its own is unlikely. The gains that American women have made towards labor market experience and skills is tremendous. In fact, women account for 47% of labor workforce and 49.3% of American jobs. But despite of women’s strides, a gender pay gap still exists. Experts suggest that it will take 100 years to close the gap at the rate employers and legislators are working to create solutions. But by allowing women to work in higher paying positions and by proposing and updating pay equity laws, the gender gap can finally be diminished.
In the article, Clinton vs. Trump: Equal Pay for Equal Work, Hilary Clinton argues that the issue of the gender pay gap is a major problem in this country and she plans on tackling these problems surrounding the pay gap that affects these women. The views of Clinton’s unequal pay gap display other wide dimensions relating to: women’s equality in our society and how the pay gap not only targets certain women but women who are mothers, and women of color. Notably, most Americans are unaware about the issue of unequal pay gap between men and women, and consequently this leads to inequality towards women in the workplace. I strongly stress the controversial issue to enforce and fight inequality of working mothers, color of women, and women have been facing in the workplace with the issue of unequal pay between and how men are viewed as more competent in the workplace.
The article by Avital-Cohen and Tsal (2016) discussed the flanker task experiment, which asserted that distractor interference happens unconsciously as a result of focused attention toward the target. The results from the original flanker task indicated that participants had slower responses for incongruent trials, since the distractors are inconsistent with the target and would require a different response (Avital-Cohen & Tsal, 2016). However, Avital-Cohen and Tsal (2016) questioned the findings from the flanker task experiment. They decided to challenge the idea that only the target stimuli receives top-down processing, and not the distractors (Avital-Cohen & Tsal, 2016). The first experiment aimed to test whether the distractor interference is purely bottom-up processing as claimed in the flanker task. The experiment manipulated participants’ expectations of the target using the context effect - a type of top-down processing - by changing the distractors to be either letters or digits (Psych 240 lecture, 9/21/16). Then, the researchers conducted a second experiment and eliminated the ambiguity of distractors. They wanted to test whether the result from experiment 1 was caused by an overall bias or the ambiguous distractors. Warren Farrell, expert on gender issues within legislation and former board member of National Organization for Women, claims otherwise. In his book Why Men Earn More, he attributes difference in wages to females choosing human resources jobs, which pay less, and not choosing harsher jobs that pay more (Farrell). His overall point is that men sacrifice more thus companies pay more for those sacrifices. His argument only compares the genders when different job requirements alter wages, but does not mention wages of identical jobs.

Yet, instead of provoking an equality among the sexes, the figures play no statistical significance, as women still try to bridge the gap between their inequality among their male counterparts. One apparent setback for women in the workplace is their unequal payment, “Women workers are still paid less than men, currently about-three quarters of mens income if they work full time and year round”(Institute for Womens’s Policy Research, 2010). It is important to address the systemic inequalities of the gender pay gap. To do this, this essay will use Bacchi (2006) approach to analyse the text “Speech to HRINZ: The reasons for the Gender Pay Gap” by MP Paula Bennett. This essay will illustrate the theoretical perspective of liberal feminism to show the understanding of the problem, and the solutions of the gender pay gap. This essay will also look at two other theoretical perspectives, social democratic, and anti-racism and discuss their viewpoints and solutions towards the problem.
The gender wage gap has been a nationwide problem since women were able to enter the workforce. Women have begun to speak out more about the issue and evaluate what they can do to change the industries and how they personally present themselves to help this change. Currently there is a wide range of opinions on this issue, with some saying it does not exist while others think it will ruin the economy if not fixed immediately. This makes it more difficult to address the problem and predict how it will be in the future; however, all sides of the spectrum are becoming more aware of what the gender wage gap means and what they can do to change it. This paper will analyze the different stances on the extent of this social issue as well as the current practices being used to increase knowledge and equalize pay for all.
