This quote states that “all Negroes lie” when everyone can lie. It’s a general assumption that only blacks lie. Apart from “all Negroes lie” all Negroes are supposedly “immoral beings” too. In the book, Mr. Ewell blames Tom Robinson for raping his daughter, Mayella. Tom Robinson is innocent because there was no evidence from the doctor that he had raped Mayella. They also accused Tom of hitting her on the right side of her face, which you need a left arm to do so. Tom Robinson’s left arm was amputated when he was younger, therefore he couldn’t have hit her. Mr.Ewell abuses his own daughter because he drinks, so he blames his doings on Tom. “Blacks experienced segregation in the schools and neighborhoods, decaying housing milked by white slumlords, discrimination by employers and unions, brutally by the police.” (Journal of Socialomics). This quote tells us that “black experienced segregation in the schools and neighborhoods.” Why do African Americans have to be separated from
Racism has the power to change anybody’s life. Jem Finch is a young teen character from To Kill a Mockingbird who longed for the warm summer days when he could just play on the lawn and not care about the future. However, as the novel progresses, it becomes clear that he cannot just play around when he knows what is going on around him and what is happening to the black community of Maycomb, Alabama. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a success in the world of literature. Set in the 1930’s down south where racism was rampant, Harper Lee shows us the challenges of growing up in a community of inequality through the characters Jem and Scout Finch. Jem is older than Scout by 3 years so he understands how serious the nature of racism is and
Social Inequality Social Inequality has been here for many years, as long as the 50´s until now. In this book To Kill a Mockingbird you will see a lot of social Inequality. Harper Lee Shows how race and gender were like in the 60´s. In this story I will be talking about race, gender, and social inequality from today.
Social inequality based entirely on race affects people who don’t deserve it. To Kill a Mockingbird original publication was in 1960, it is a classic novel written by Harper Lee, the book is set in 1933 to 1935. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in a small town called Maycomb, Alabama and follows two years in the life of 7-year old Scout Finch, her brother Jem, and their father Atticus, an attorney who hopelessly strives to prove the innocence of a black man accused of rape. The book also talks about Boo Radley, a mysterious neighbour who saves Scout and her brother Jem from being killed. The definition of social and legal codes are social codes made up of rules and standards, and a legal system is a code of laws made by a state or nation. Throughout the book, social and legal codes are exploited by people to help maintain their social status. In Maycomb County, social and legal laws harm black people to protect white people, such as Atticus Finch, Bob Ewell, and Tom Robinson.
If humanity does not remember our past and reflect it, we will never move forward to a more successful future. The only way to move forward and make the world a better place is to learn from our past. Through inequality, we have learned from the past to grow our communities in the spirit of a hopeful future by being compassionate and resilient. One way we have grown from our past to grow our communities in spirit of a hopeful future is to stand up for inequality and make a difference. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a black man, Tom Robinson, was accused of a crime that he did not commit just because he was a black man.
People every day are being discriminated against because of their race, religion, ethnicity, or wealth. This has been happening because of the way society places importance on certain people. It can be found all throughout history, meaning the human race has not learned from their mistakes. The world has become a constant reminder for certain “types” of people that they are less than others. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, the poor, women, and whites and blacks are constantly being judged.
The novel To Kill A Mockingbird is able to relate to the real world. About how unfair the world is and about the inequality people still face. In the novel, Jean Louise Finch (AKA Scout) is narrating and telling a story about how her older brother Jeremy Finch (AKA jem) broke his arm from the elbow down. It all starts in a little town called maycomb during the great depression. Scout first starts the story by telling her family history. How atticus left their family land to become a lawyer and how his sister Alexandra Finch stayed to take care of the land. Scout and Jem meet a kid named Dill during the summer and when Jem tells Dill about Boo Radley, Dill becomes more curious the more jem tell him. When summer ends it’s time for school, scout gets in a fight not even a week into school and she gets in an argument with the new teacher Miss.Caroline. Later on in the story Atticus is defending and negro man named Tom Robinson and that causes trouble in the whole county against that. In this paper i will be talking about how good and evil go against each other and how social inequality was and still is a problem.

Racism was a normal thing in Maycomb County, but out of the entire county Bob Ewell was the worst. “I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin’ on my Mayella.” (Lee 231) Bob Ewell refers to Tom Robinson as (a) “black nigger” on the witness stand in front of everyone. Clearly, he doesn’t care about discriminating Tom Robinson right in front of his face and also in front of the people that are in the courtroom. “As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life…” (Lee 295). If Bob Ewell had put himself in Tom’s shoes, he would have seen how hard of a life it is for African Americans. He is one who will “cheat black men everyday of (his) life”, because of his ignorance. (Lee 295) Being racist not only hurts the victim, but ruins your reputation and your life.
It is inescapable, surrounding every aspect of life, casting its shadow upon society. Out of every accomplishment the human race has made, we have never been able to see through the boundaries that we build between ourselves. We have never been able to conquer the social restraints that are of our own doing. They exist without exception, bordering any difference between any people. Inequality is the oldest challenge that society has faced, and it is the hardest to defeat. While it has changed and transformed itself, inequality has existed throughout all of human history, including now, and the 1930s, the time in which Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird is set. Inequality in the 1930s and now share many similarities, but are also very different. The constraints of class and social inequality of the 1930s are accurately portrayed in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, and show parallels between then and now.
As the United States “progresses” in economic, educational and technological advancements we still are fighting for racial equality. With more than 50 years since the brown vs. board of education case there is still incidents like Ferguson, Baton Rouge, and Phiando Castile where many questions are still unanswered. However, Harper Lee dealt with these same problems in 1960 when she wrote To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee created an emotionally confronting story. Lee writes through the eyes of “Scout” a lawyer’s daughter in a small sleepy town of Maycomb in Alabama during the great depression. Throughout the book “Scout” learns coming of age lessons from Atticus and her own experiences. But when Atticus takes on a case defending a black man (Tom Robinson) convicted for rapping a white woman (Mayella Ewell) and is found guilty. “Scout” her brother Jem begin to understand the effects of the prejudices in society. Therefore, Lee applies the literary concepts of diction and tone to revel the truth that prejudices in society negatively affect the way people treat each other in To Kill a Mocking Bird.
The novel To Kill a Mockingbird shows us many problems of human inequality and the division within human society. Even this topic is relevant in current society, for example we have police brutality and hate groups. But in the book To Kill a Mockingbird character Tom Robinson was falsely accused to raping a white women. Tom Robinson isn't just an individual. He's also a litmus test for Maycomb's racism.
Social inequality has been a relevant issue since the beginning of our society. We are all affected by it, and it cannot be avoided. Reflecting this, Harper Lee fluently expresses the idea that social inequalities people inherit will end up determining the quality of one's life in her book To Kill a Mockingbird. People are born into many of the most common and discriminating social inequalities. The issues our parents face become ours as well.
In the book ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee, racism and social inequality are two central themes. Many different forms of social inequality coexist in the society depicted in the book, as the people of Maycomb are very rigid in their ways. This is because the book takes place in a time at which there was much racism and social inequality. In Maycomb, firstly there is discrimination between rich and poor white people, who do not often interact with each other. There is also racism against blacks by all white people in society, both rich and poor. Black people are denied basic rights and discriminated against in this town. Lastly, there is racism between the lowest classes of the community: poor white people and
Inequality is a theme that runs throughout all of history. Harper Lee uses the theme of inequality in her book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Tom Robinson must deal with inequality when he is accused of a crime he didn’t commit because no one will trust a black man over a white man. The Cunningham family must face discrimination because of their lack of money. Scout even faces inequality when she tries to play with Jem and Dill. The theme of inequality is a strong one in Lee’s book, and her use of inequality doesn’t only define racism, but also discrimination based on wealth and gender.
Harper Lee highlighted America’s discrimination, prejudices, and social hierarchal issues and created To Kill a Mockingbird, a semi-biographical novel. Even though the novel is set in the fictitious town of Maycomb, Alabama, it addresses some very real issues that are, unfortunately, still present in modern society. America has made many positive strides since 1930 to ensure equality and freedom for all, making the Dream more attainable for citizens, but we still have more improvements to make before the Dream is available to
