During the summer I read two books, each both challenging and brilliant in their own ways. Those books were Kindred by Octavia E. Butler and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. Although both are great reads for students in Honors English, I have to say that Kindred is more appropriate to be added to the list of books to be read by Honors English 9th graders. Kindred is more challenging than The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, but in a different way than people might expect.
Kindred does not shy away from sensitive topics, as the books is based around the hardship of slavery. I think that this is a great book for 9th graders in Honors English, because not only does it challenge them, it deepens their
The key to a good book is one that captures the reader’s attention and sustains it. A book that the reader can relate to and learn something from can be an extremely valuable learning resource. When determining what books should be included in a curriculum, two very important factors are that the story is relatable for students and is able to incorporate other historical, life, or religious lessons within the study of the novel. Sue Monk Kidd’s The Secret Life of Bees should be kept in the Honors English 10 curriculum at Magnificat High School.
Christopher lives a life different from everyone else, but this is normal for him, and author Mark Haddon allows us a window into Christopher’s mind. For the play, the director wants to emphasize this particular quality of the book by juxtaposing the tenor of Christopher’s mind to the interactions he has with outside beings. Because of this perspective, the book and play explore the themes of communication and emotion in both society and Christopher Boone’s life. I expected that the play would be a physical story of what actually happened during the play. However, when I see the trailer for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, I think of looking through Christopher’s eyes and understanding what he thinks. With people, he does not register the emotions or purpose behind others’ actions or words; he just notices facts and files them away into his brain. For example, in describing his teachers at school, Christopher says, ‘…Mr. Jeavons

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a book that should be read by the millennial generation. The millennial generation would benefit from reading this book from its incorporation of the main character’s development disorder. The main character, Christopher, has difficulties with social interaction but the author doesn’t make the book revolve around this fact. Christopher describes himself as, “a mathematician with some behavioral difficulties”. Christopher investigates the murder of his neighbor’s dog and is confronted with surprising news when he finds out about the status of his parent’s marriage and when his father confesses to the murder. Christopher discovers his mother hasn’t passed away like his father told him and is instead living in London with his

Mark Hadden’s, ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time,’ follows a mystery written from the perspective of the novel’s protagonist, Christopher, a fifteen year old suffering from Asperger’s and a “mathematician with some behavioural difficulties.” His condition results in him speaking and thinking differently to the people around him. As this story starts off as a fast-paced mystery novel, it reveals the underlying and heart-wrenching story of Christopher’s longing to belong and be ‘normal’. The first person narration used by Haddon, allows the audience to have a deeper understanding of Christopher’s unique circumstances by writing the book in the form of diary entries. The killing of his next door neighbour’s beloved dog, Wellington,
The Curious incident of the dog in the night-time is a great novel, that gives a special perception of how an autistic boys views and interprets the world. By critical analyzing the story's theme, symbols, motifs, characters, and conflicts it gives a much more prevalent idea of the logical thinking and ideas of Christopher and his family. Also while reading the novel through a psychoanalytic theory, Christopher follows what seems to be the most logical actions to please his needs.
I have recently completed Black Boy by Richard Wright, and believe it would be a great addition to the tenth grade curriculum. Black Boy is an autobiography about the author Richard Wright's life. It begins with four year old Richard setting his house on fire, which instantly draws in the reader. From there Richard leads the reader through his life of poverty and loneliness. We experience his losses as well as his gains in the world. Most importantly, throughout the book, we see a different side of all races than we normally see in the books written by the dead white men. Like the rhymes Richard created with the neighborhood kids to taunt the jews. “We black children-seven, eight, and nine years of age- used to run to the Jew’s stores and shout: Jew Jew, Jew what do you chew?”(Wright 60,61). This book allows us to experience how it was to be black during the Jim Crow era. This is something we are not introduced to in the current curriculum for American Literature Advanced or English 10.
In my research I will go through all the information regarding the case that changed America. The Brown vs Board of Education which began in 1951. In my search I will go through the differences of the trail and some similarities of society today. My research there was a case that set the entire mood which was the Plessy vs Ferguson that allowed segregation in schools. Colors and whites were still equal but only in different schools. Brown vs board began with 13 Black teenagers whose parents enrolled them to schools which were closer to their home. These happen to be local white schools only. This was done with the intension to break the barrier of an all-White school or Black school.

This world is made up of so many secrets that each of us has. Sometimes we have some secrets that we don't share especially with our loved ones as we don't know how they will take it or if it will have an affect on them.Throughout the story, we are given hints to understand Christopher and his uniqueness. He knows all the countries of the world and their capitals, every prime number until seven-thousand, fifty-seven. He also hates the colors yellow and brown, that he won't even eat anything with those colors. He is described as being “unique” and very different from others.Christopher finds out some family secrets but what he finds out isn’t a secret because a secret isn’t a secret if it will affect someone else and a lie, isn’t a lie if no harm is being done.
History over the years has taught us of many different ways on how to control or punish people who don’t follow the rules and laws imposed by society and courts. These are adopted by society to establish behavior standards. Whether some of them are effective or not, these must be respected in order to not fall into a severe punishment like the death penalty. However; For serious acts of crimes it’s not looking like a horrible idea considering what these monsters are doing. The children can learn from the death penalty, Corporal punishment helps make children obedient, respectful, and polite. In the absence of corporal punishment, children will likely go wild.
