In chapter 1 “Love Enough,” a student name Dean Merrill dies, a teacher Cornelius Englebrcht, begins to go over his life and things that will need to be done. He invites Richard, who also teach at the university back to his house and shows him a painting claimed to have been created by Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer was said to have been a well-known Dutch painter whose works held a huge value in the art world and they were spectacular(4-6). Cornelius and Richard start to argue over the fact that the painting could very well be a Vermeer, Cornelius is inspired by the painting but he isn’t sure if the painting is real. He examines the details of the painting and how it was probably created and sold to pay off a debt(8-10). Her house is flooded horribly and some of the surrounding houses have been washed away but, she still lives comfortably(109-110). She has the cows for milk and butter and a brazier for baking. She tends to the house while her husband goes and fixes everyone’s dikes, then one day he comes home and hands her a baby along with a Vermeer painting. The painting comes with a note that reads “Sell the painting, feed the baby”(112-113). Sadly, the mystery doesn’t get solved due to the constant flooding but Saskia takes the baby in and grows to love it.
